Nokia and KPN successfully trial 25G PON in Rotterdam animal hospital

Press Release

Nokia and KPN successfully trial 25G PON in Rotterdam animal hospital

November 18, 2022

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced KPN has demonstrated 20 Gb/second broadband speeds in a field trial with the Caresse animal hospital in Rotterdam. High speed connectivity is increasingly important in veterinary medicine where high resolution images need to be accessed in the cloud. Symmetrical speeds of 20Gb/s would be capable of uploading (or downloading) almost 100 scans of 30 MB each in one second.

KPN deployed Nokia's state-of-the-art 25G PON technology in the field trial using its existing fiber network. Using Nokia's Quillon chip, 25G PON can work alongside GPON and XGS-PON on the same fiber, and powered by the same access node.

Babak Fouladi, chief technology and digital officer and member of KPN's board of management said: "At KPN, we are doing everything we can to give everyone access to superfast internet by building a national fiber optic network. The demonstration in the Caresse animal hospital shows that very high speeds are vital for the digital future of the Netherlands. I am proud that we can contribute to this with our super-fast network."

Sandy Motley, President Nokia Fixed Networks, said: "We are delighted to have worked with KPN on this exciting trial. Operators are now using fiber broadband networks to support enterprise as well as residential customers which is accelerating demand for higher speeds. When we designed our Quillion chipset, a key requirement was to be able to support multiple PON technologies on the same fiber, giving operators the flexibility to offer different service levels dependent on the customers' needs."

Notes to editors

Nokia's 25G PON solution utilizes the world's first implementation of 25G PON technology and includes Lightspan and ISAM access nodes, Quillion based Multi-PON line cards and fiber modems.

Dependent on the optics chosen, 25G PON supports symmetrical bitrates (25Gb/s in downstream and 25G in upstream) and asymmetrical bitrates (25/10).

Usually located in telecom central offices, Nokia's high-capacity access nodes are deployed for massive scale fiber roll-outs. They connect thousands of users via optical fibre, aggregate their broadband traffic and send it deeper in the network. The fiber access nodes can support multiple fiber technologies including GPON, XGS-PON, 25G PON and Point-to-Point Ethernet to deliver a wide range of services with the best fit technology.

Nokia ONT (Optical Network Termination) devices, or fiber modems, are located at the user location. They terminate the optical fibre connection and delivers broadband services within the user premises or cell sites.

Nokia and MCIT boost sustainability and customer network support with new maintenance hub in Saudi Arabia

Press Release

Nokia and MCIT boost sustainability and customer network support with new maintenance hub in Saudi Arabia

  • New regional maintenance hub offers support to customers across Middle East and Africa as well as training to local engineers
  • Move supports Nokia's commitment to circular practices to extend the lifetime of its products and drive more sustainable and efficient networks
  • Supports Saudi Vision 2030 which aims to drive digital transformation and progress toward a circular economy by limiting waste, and recycling and re-using materials

17 November 2022

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – Nokia today announced the opening of a new regional maintenance hub in Riyadh in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia that will support its customers across the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region. The new center will provide repair and support services for Nokia's 5G and legacy telecoms network equipment as well as training to local engineers. The move supports Nokia's efforts to extend the lifespan of its network equipment through the adoption of circular practices that enable greater material efficiency and reduced waste, enabling more sustainable networks.

The initiative is part of Nokia's plan to expand its operations in the Kingdom and support digital transformation and the localization of equipment services. Nokia's investment is dedicated to knowledge sharing particularly in undertaking complex and critical repair and reuse services while ensuring sustainable localization. The new center is expected to save at least four weeks of end-to-end logistics time as well as reduce the environmental impact of logistics by having a local center instead of a global model. Nokia will work in partnership with a local firm, Saak International on the initiative. The center is one of Nokia's first initiatives following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) of Saudi Arabia and Nokia in 2019. The agreement supports the country's 'Saudi Vision 2030' strategy.

Nokia has set ambitious targets to cut emissions across its value chain by 50 percent between 2019 and 2030 as part of its renewed science-based targets. Approximately 50 percent of global emissions come from the global production of materials and less than 10 percent of materials are treated as circular. Nokia adopted circular practices over 25 years ago and has made significant progress in adopting circular practices by reusing, recycling, and repairing legacy products and components to extend their life cycle and optimize waste management. In 2020, Nokia processed 5,870 metric tons of obsolete products and parts.

Eng. Bassam Al Bassam, Deputy Minister for Telecom and Digital Infrastructure at MCIT, said: "We are pleased that Nokia has chosen Saudi Arabia as a regional hub for its maintenance operations to serve enterprises and service providers not only in our Kingdom but also across the MEA region. This is yet another milestone in the collaboration with MCIT and it further deepens the strong relationship between Nokia and the Kingdom."

Ibrahim Al-Abbas, Senior Country Officer for Saudi Arabia at Nokia, said: "Saudi Arabia has great significance to Nokia and is our largest market in the region. From this perspective, setting up a regional maintenance hub is an important initiative, and will enable us to offer our customers across the Middle East and Africa region world-class support services as well as improve the capabilities of local engineers. Extending the lifetime of products through the adoption of circular practices takes us a step closer to achieving our own climate goals while reducing waste and realizing the full value of our products."

Nokia and TPG Telecom set new 5G uplink speed record in Australia

  • In an Australian first, Nokia and TPG Telecom demonstrated a 5G uplink speed of 2 Gbps
  • The live demonstration used Nokia's commercial AirScale Radio solution together with TPG Telecom's 5G mmWave spectrum
  • Fast uplink speed is critical for Industrial and IoT applications running over 5G

16 November 2022

Sydney, Australia – Nokia and TPG Telecom today announced they have hit a 5G uplink speed of 2 Gigabits per second (Gbps). Using TPG Telecom's 5G mmWave spectrum, this milestone was achieved during a live demonstration at the Nokia 5G Futures Lab in Sydney, Australia.

The new Australian 5G uplink record, which follows on from a number of Australian 5G speed records announced by Nokia earlier in the year, will enable Nokia and its customers such as TPG Telecom to offer ultra-high-performing, low-latency services for Industrial and IoT applications which are heavily reliant on high-speed uplink connectivity. The solution is expected to be fully deployed next year as devices that support this capability become available.

The live demonstration involved a commercially available Nokia AirScale 5G mmWave base station utilising TPG Telecom's 26 GHz spectrum to connect, over the air, to a 5G device powered by a Snapdragon® X65 5G Modem-RF System featuring fourth-generation Qualcomm® QTM545 mmWave antenna modules. Additionally, Nokia deployed its industry-leading Carrier Aggregation (CA) technology to fully leverage the available spectrum assets. The CA setup included four component carriers of 100 MHz each in the 26 GHz band.

The demonstration also leveraged Nokia's 5G Core to provide the speed, intelligence, and security for testing the delivery of new advanced 5G services.

Once deployed, 5G mmWave technology will create new service opportunities for both consumers and industries. For consumers it will allow real-time multi-user 8K ultra-high-definition bi-directional video streaming, and augmented reality content for smartphones or wearable devices for immersive experiences.

For industries it will enable streaming of massive amounts of data directly from embedded IoT sensors and industrial robots over 5G, allowing the real-time control of industrial processes using powerful 5G connected Edge Compute Nodes. This concept of processor offload across 5G was also demonstrated at the event using "Spot" - the 5G connected Robot Dog - developed in conjunction with academics at the University of Technology Sydney.

Dr Robert Joyce, Chief Technology Officer at Nokia Oceania, said: "Super-fast uplink speeds are critical to fully realise the huge benefits of 5G networks, particularly as we look to emerging technologies like augmented intelligence, machine learning, advanced sensors and robotics that are set to transform industries and economies with huge safety, productivity and efficiency outcomes as we move towards the metaverse era. For consumers and industries alike, the future is exciting. Pushing the boundaries of 5G with innovative customers like TPG Telecom in Australia is a big part of this journey forward."
