Nokia launches NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations for 5G era

Press Release

·NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations replaces manually-intensive approaches to cybersecurity with highly automated processes that tap machine learning, analytics and threat intelligence

October 31, 2019

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the launch of NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations to give communication service providers (CSPs) a highly automated end-to-end system to meet the demands of 5G network connectivity and to address the rising cybersecurity threat posed by internet-connected devices.

Security teams today can receive more than 10,000 cyber security alerts each day. Not all these are security breaches; some are false alerts and others duplicate information. Yet, the sheer number of alerts can overwhelm security teams, which require a better way to automatically prioritize alerts in order to focus on the most threatening cases.

NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations replaces more manually-intensive and siloed approaches to cybersecurity risks with automation, machine learning, analytics and threat intelligence. By harnessing such capabilities, NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations greatly expands security teams' real-time visibility into the network, as well internet-connected devices and the telco cloud, and arms them with the ability to identify and troubleshoot suspicious anomalies at scale with rapid, automated and predictive responses.

5G's high bandwidth and ultra-low latency capabilities greatly facilitate connecting billions of things to the internet (IoT), including smart home security monitoring systems, vehicles, drones and medical devices. But lagging security protection of many IoT devices and increasing technical sophistication are giving cyber criminals scope for launching attacks through a much greater number of access points. This can leave unprotected devices on a network at risk of being infected by IoT malware, designed for nefarious purposes like data theft, within a matter minutes.

NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations is aimed at the growing market known as SOAR, or Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response. Tasked with helping CSPs collect data from multiple sources and respond to security operations quickly, a SOAR platform integrates security solutions and automates many tasks while allowing human intervention.

The Market Guide for Security Orchestration, Automation and Response Solutions1 (Gartner subscription required) released by Gartner in June, estimates that "by year-end 2022, 30% of organizations with a security team larger than five people will leverage SOAR tools in their security operations, up from less than 5% today."

The NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations product suite includes the NetGuard Security Management Center, which provides an expansive, real-time view across a network;   NetGuard Certificate Lifecycle Manager, which centrally controls the process of verifying, for example, that a person at one end of a connection is really who they say they are; and NetGuard Endpoint Security, which stop threats before they become costly data breaches.

Curtis Price, Vice President of Infrastructure Services, IDC, said:  "5G supports a variety of use cases that promise new revenue models. That calls for new, dynamic and flexible security architectures running on shared infrastructures. Nokia's Adaptive Security Operations solution meets the need to identify malicious attackers, including potential insider threats, by analyzing user or machine behavior and automatically indicating the level of the threat."

Mary O'Neill, Nokia Vice President of Security Products, said: "Because 5G is about an entirely new type of network with many more potential entry points for cyber criminals, CSPs require a new approach that uses best in class machine learning, analytics, threat intelligence and automation to constantly detect risks at scale and troubleshoot those risks rapidly. NetGuard Adaptive Security Operations is designed to do those things and more."

According to research conducted by the Federation of Industries of São Paulo State (FIESP) in partnership with SENAI-SP, 90% of companies familiar with Industry 4.0 agree it will boost productivity. Meanwhile, 79% acknowledge it will impact business models, but only 30% started the process to adopt Industry 4.0 technologies.

As the economic powerhouse of South America, Brazil has committed to investing in technologies that will boost manufacturing and industry output – part of the country's economic and social fabric. Adopting digital technologies is a priority for Brazil, as it seeks to maintain global competitiveness and addresses productivity challenges. Smarter applications of connectivity, Industrial IoT (IIoT) and automation will increase the efficiency at which businesses operate, ultimately improving the overall rate of production.

Nokia believes that Industry 4.0 will produce the opportunity to enhance the work delivered by organizations today, using technology to automate processes and empowering employees to develop new skills. World Bank data shows that the Brazilian industrial sector accounted for 21% of the country's total employment in 2017, including manufacturing, mining, construction and public utilities.

The partnership will enable SENAI-SP to utilize the reach of its 166 units in the state to work with Nokia to research and develop new technologies, training and preparing professionals across Brazil for the age of Industry 4.0 in all segments where SENAI-SP operates.

Nokia will leverage its end-to-end portfolio of technology and connectivity solutions to support enterprises across Brazil, as the lab will serve the whole country. Some of the solutions Nokia and SENAI-SP will deploy in the São Caetano do Sul lab include:

Nokia prepares Ooredoo Tunisia for 5G with cloud mobile core project

Press Release

Nokia prepares Ooredoo Tunisia for 5G with cloud mobile core project

  • Nokia's AirGile cloud-native core will enable Ooredoo Tunisia's transition to 5G, launch and speed the delivery of new services, and meet growing data and video demands
  • The Nokia Cloud IMS will allow Ooredoo to launch new voice services, such as VoLTE and VoBB

30 October 2019

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Ooredoo Tunisia will deploy the Nokia AirGile cloud-native core and services to power its current 2G/3G/4G network in order to prepare for the transition to 5G.

Ooredoo Tunisia is the country's biggest mobile operator with 8.8 million subscribers and 40% market share. Data use, excluding voice-only subscribers, has more than doubled over the last four years and is expected to triple by 2025 — driven largely by smartphone adoption and video usage, with a fivefold increase since 2015.

The new virtualized core infrastructure will harness the scalability, automation and agility afforded with cloud-native network solutions to reduce operational costs; boost the responsiveness of the network to escalating data and video demand, and speed the development of new services for the Tunisian consumer and enterprise markets. The cloud-native mobile core will make services more affordable and responsive to demand, in terms of both capacity and bringing innovative services to subscribers faster.

As a part of Nokia's end-to-end 5G offering, Nokia's cloud-native core solution is essential to running a 5G network and can be deployed in 4G networks today. The cloudification network elements allow rapid scaling in real-time to meet immediate capacity demands for consumers and enterprises, including time-sensitive services for enterprise automation or support for industrial internet of things (IIoT) sensors and devices; as well as innovative voice services, such as voice over LTE (VoLTE) and voice over broadband (VoBB). This will lead to the significant improvement of phone calls, as they move from 2G/3G networks to 4G, and eventually 5G.

The Nokia solution deployed as part of this agreement by Ooredoo Tunisia include:

  • Nokia AirGile cloud-native core, which includes VoLTE and Packet Core products;
  • Nokia's engineered Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure (NFVI), built using Nokia AirFrame cloud infrastructure, Nokia CloudBand cloud management and orchestration stack; and
  • Nokia Nuage Networks' software-defined networking (SDN).

Hatem Mestiri, CTO  for Ooredoo Tunisia, said: "Deploying the cloud-native mobile core from Nokia is about preparing Ooredoo to meet future customer demands. It will enable us to be more agile in our response to their needs for everything from video capacity to VoLTE services. And it will enable us to offer them advanced 5G services such as support for industrial automation and IoT as these exciting technologies come to the Tunisian market."

Pierre Chaume, Head of the North and West Africa Market Unit at Nokia, said: "Ooredoo Tunisia is a pioneer in North Africa in moving its core network to the cloud. It will streamline and automate its operations, enable Ooredoo to use software development to speed new services to market, and make it far more responsive to the needs of its consumer and enterprise customers. By also preparing for the transition to 5G, the steps that Ooredoo Tunisia is taking to modernize its network will ensure that it continues to lead in the delivery of advanced services to the Tunisian market."
