Port operator Steveco embraces Port 4.0 with private LTE solution from Nokia and Ukkoverkot

Press release

  • Benefits to Steveco from the new high-capacity mobile broadband network in the Port of HaminaKotka include improved situational awareness of port logistics and security
  • Private networks operator Ukkoverkot and Nokia have signed a strategic alliance agreement regarding private LTE and digital automation for Finnish enterprises

19 December, 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia and Ukkoverkot are providing a private LTE network to the Port of HaminaKotka, bringing the ability to embrace IoT and digitalize processes as well as providing mobile access to vital applications and information.

Through the new connectivity the harbor operator has seen improvements across multiple areas, from improved situational awareness of container handling to warehouse logistics and port security. The dedicated low-latency network enables wirelessly connected cameras on cranes to provide real-time video streaming and analytics, as well as business-critical connectivity for trucks, sensors and workers.

The deal with Steveco is the most recent result from the close partnership between Ukkoverkot, the leading provider of private LTE networks in Finland, and Nokia. The collaboration has already brought dedicated pervasive connectivity to Finavia, Konecranes and facilitated a Sandvik and Nokia deal to deliver industrial IoT to mining, and the companies today announced a new strategic alliance to target more business among Finnish corporate customers.

Large enterprises increasingly require highly reliable wireless connectivity as they execute on their digital transformation agenda based on analytical insight, for which they need connected sensors, machines, robots, vehicles and people. Nokia and Ukkoverkot bring proven, mission-critical wireless networks and cloud solutions for specific use cases in Finland. The aim is to help shape enterprise customer networks with state-of-the-art technology so that they can fully embrace IoT, digitalization and intelligence for greater business efficiency, safety and agility.

Niko Arola, Terminal Manager, Steveco, said: "Previously it was not possible to prove the condition in which containers arrived to, and departed from, the harbor. Now we can, if needed, establish the status and state of incoming containers and insurance responsibility thanks to the cameras in the cranes. The connectivity also covers our terminals and the rest of the port area, enabling efficient communication for logistics and asset tracking."

Jouko Tuppurainen, VP Sales, Ukkoverkot, said: "Private LTE provides the reliability, coverage, capacity, and security needed for industrial campuses, like ports, across a variety of industries. A dedicated network infrastructure connects people, vehicles, sensors, machines and robots with a guaranteed quality of service."

Stephan Litjens, head of Nokia Digital Automation, said: "Ports involve many parties, each needing connectivity but requiring access only to certain information stemming from the different applications and devices. A dedicated digital automation platform can be sliced so that each party can access the needed information, and each slice can be assigned priorities. It also opens the window to advanced analytics and other digital automation building blocks to boost efficiency and productivity."

Satamaoperaattori Steveco digitalisoi HaminaKotka satamaa Nokian ja Ukkoverkkojen toimittamalla yksityisellä LTE-verkkoratkaisulla

NOKIA

Taustamateriaalia:

2018 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Arthur Ashkin delivers his Nobel Lecture at Nokia Bell Labs

NOKIA

2018 Nobel Prize in Physics laureate Arthur Ashkin delivers his Nobel Lecture at Nokia Bell Labs

  • Ashkin delivers his Nobel Lecture at Nokia Bell Labs headquarters in New Jersey, after being unable to attend the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony in Sweden
  • Ashkin's invention of optical tweezers while at Bell Labs profoundly changed medical research
  • Laureate of the 9th Nobel Prize in Bell Labs history is enshrined into the Bell Labs Laureate Garden

17 December 2018

Murray Hill, N.J. - Nokia Bell Labs, the world renowned industrial research arm of Nokia, today held a ceremony in honor of Arthur Ashkin, who was awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for work undertaken while at Bell Labs. Ashkin was awarded the prize for the invention of optical tweezers and their application to biological systems, which enables scientists to further unravel the mysteries of human life.

The highlight of the ceremony was Ashkin delivering his Nobel Lecture for the first time.  He was unable to travel to Stockholm to receive his award so his son, Daniel, received it on his behalf.  His Laureate lecture was presented by Bell Labs researcher and close friend, Rene-Jean Essiambre as part of the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony festivities, to great acclaim.  But today in Murray Hill, NJ, Arthur was able to deliver the lecture himself to a captive audience of Nobel Laureates, and former colleagues and collaborators, who came to honor his outstanding accomplishment.

The ceremony held at Nokia Bell Labs headquarters in Murray Hill, N.J., also included the unveiling of a 'Nobel Circle' and plaque dedicated to Ashkin inside the Bell Labs Laureate Garden. The garden now includes nine such Nobel Circles, one for each of the Nobel Prizes that have been awarded to Bell Labs researchers, for pioneering work performed at this remarkable innovation and idea factory.

Marcus Weldon, President of Nokia Bell Labs and CTO of Nokia, said, "The long-standing mission of Bell Labs is to understand future human needs and to create solutions that transform how we live and work, by addressing the 'seemingly impossible' and making it not only possible, but probable and applicable to all.  This has led to numerous innovative inventions and technologies that have redefined human existence. Arthur was on a quest to improve human communications by understanding the limits of optical communications and, as part of his research into novel laser-induced phenomena, he invented the optical tweezers that would subsequently be used to dramatically improve the ability of scientists to conduct microscopic medical research. The entire Bell Labs family is incredibly proud of Arthur and we are delighted to recognize him and his work for posterity, with a permanent circle in his honor in our Bell Labs Laureate Garden."

Espoo, Finland - Nokia, Elisa and Efore have commercially deployed a liquid-cooled base station system in an apartment building in Helsinki, a world-first achievement that promises lower costs for operators and owners of base station sites, as well as reduced CO2 emissions.

In the deployment, heat emitted from the base station has been redirected to heat the building, lowering energy costs. In previously conducted customer trials with the Nokia solution, Nokia Bell Labs saw a reduction of up 80.percent in CO2 emissions and up to 30 percent in energy operating expenses - significant savings for operators and other owners of base station sites. Liquid cooling permits the removal of air conditioning and fans, promising further operator savings, potentially longer base station component life and silent sites.

The Nokia Bell Labs-developed liquid-cooled base station was made at Nokia's Oulu facility in Finland and the liquid-cooled power system was developed by power supplier Efore, with Elisa deploying the base station in Helsinki. The VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. evaluated the environmental impact of the liquid-cooled base station and energy usage compared to those generated by air cooling in the field.

Helsinki Business Hub played a key role by identifying the opportunity and right project partners and connecting them with each other. Helsinki Business Hub is a regional development agency whose role is to enable innovation driven companies to grow and develop in Greater Helsinki.

Minna Kröger, Director, Corporate responsibility from Elisa, said: "We have set science-based targets to reduce our emissions in our effort to become an environmental leader, and we are committed to providing customers the services that enable them to act in a sustainable way. We are excited to leverage the extensive expertise of Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs for this important deployment."

Pekka Sundström, head of the Elisa customer team at Nokia, said: "Nokia and Nokia Bell Labs have conducted extensive research and testing to explore the possibilities of using a liquid-cooled base station in an operator's network. This first commercial deployment will enable us to understand the real-world benefits for customers such as Elisa as they transition toward 5G, and how the system can be implemented on a wider scale to help reduce the environmental impact of information and communications technology. We continue to explore ways of introducing efficiencies and reducing emissions across our portfolio, and this project marks a significant step in that journey."

Vlad Grigore, Chief Technology Officer of Efore, said: "We are dedicated to providing efficient and reliable power supply solutions tailored to our customer's needs. The power system pilot with MHE (Modular High Efficiency) rectifiers adapted for liquid cooling helps reduce energy consumption and emissions, with a positive impact on environment. We are enthusiastic about this development that continues our long tradition of close cooperation with Nokia."
