Cairo, Egypt: Telecom Egypt today announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nokia to introduce 5G network and test use cases. This announcement took place during the GSMA Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain. The MoU has been signed by Mr. Adel Hamed, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Telecom Egypt, and Amr K. El Leithy, head of the Middle East and Africa market, Nokia, in the presence of a number of dignitaries from the two companies.

 

Under this MoU, collaboration between the two sides will focus on 5G deployment as well as the evaluation of appropriate use cases of the 5G technology in the Egyptian market. As a matter of fact, this MoU represents a turning point for Telecom Egypt towards its digital transformation strategy, particularly because the company has already a set of state-of-the-art 5G-ready solutions and services from Nokia.

Cairo, Egypt - Nokia and Telecom Egypt today announced they will build the first cloud infrastructure in Egypt exclusively for Internet of Things (IoT) services. Telecom Egypt will use Nokia's Worldwide IoT Network Grid (WING) as a Service as the platform to launch IoT services for the enterprise segment later this year.

 

Nokia WING enables operators like Telecom Egypt to offer IoT services to enterprises on a global scale. Telecom Egypt will be able to tap into the growing IoT market fast and cost-effectively due to the Nokia WING one-stop model, which includes a worldwide IoT Infrastructure-as-a-Service and pay-as-you-grow business model. WING enables Telecom Egypt to provide global IoT service at almost local prices as opposed to more expensive roaming prices.

 

As part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Nokia and Telecom Egypt will also explore joint marketing initiatives and will work to accelerate the development of an IoT partner ecosystem in the country. A number of IoT use cases drive automation, which will help enterprises cut their operational expenses, enhance productivity and bring new services to market faster.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that it has teamed up with CMCC and demonstrate a 5G AI powered QoE solution for an immersive VR gaming application at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019. As one of the first equipment vendors joining the O-RAN Alliance, Nokia uses its latest edge cloud to host the real-time computing and artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) capabilities. The open API based on the O-RAN RIC architecture will manage and update the machine-learning trained models, to autonomously adapt 5G connection for the extreme demands of VR application, ensuring a premium experience for the gamers.

 

As the mobile world prepares itself for the exciting arrival of the world's first 5G networks, CMCC and Nokia is testing the extreme limits of what can be achieved at this year's Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Virtual and augmented reality games are some of the most demanding real-time applications coming into the networks. Both members of the O-RAN Alliance, Nokia and CMCC have been working closely on an open, intelligent radio network architecture that will support well the usage of AI/ML techniques and edge cloud real-time computing capabilities. The system uses the O-RAN Interface Controller (RIC) A1 interface to help the AI/ML capability to learn and adapt to network traffic so as to better control for QoS and ensure the quality of experience for the gamers.

 

The Nokia edge cloud offering, including the recent launched Open Edge Server (OES) tailored for far edge deployment, will be able to provide the required real-time computing capabilities for VR video rendering in cloud. This ensures ultra-low latency, no jitter and adapts to the highly variable bit rate of the VR gaming traffic. CMCC and Nokia have collaborated closely on the O-RAN architecture and industrialization,  having provided the real-time  intelligence required by using AI/ML capabilities of the Nokia Open edge cloud combined to the O-RAN RIC's A1 interface. The proof of concept is the first of its kind on an end-to-end enhanced AI use case over RIC using the O-RAN architecture.

 

Nokia strongly believes that open architecture and open interfaces are the key for 5G to succeed as a wide eco-system. Strong, open, collaborative industrial eco-system that Nokia aims for driving the O-RAN work will enable collaborative innovations to be rapidly realized as compatible services that run on the Radio intelligent controller platform.

 

Dr. Chih-Lin I, Chief Scientist, Wireless Technologies, China Mobile Research Institute , said: "At this MWC, China Mobile and the partners successfully demonstrated multiple capabilities based on O-RAN achitechture, among of which VR gaming QoE use case is the most eye-catching one. The Optimization of top level service QoE is one of the most important RIC use cases,  in which CMCC and Nokia have been accelerating the research for a long time, and already achieved a series of results, and  its broad application prospect is highly expected. "

Barcelona, Spain, MWC 2019 - South African operator rain and Nokia today announced the launch of the country's first commercial-ready 5G network in Cape Town, following the deployment of the first 5G site last November. The achievement supports rain's goal to introduce 5G services at the earliest possible time in line with South Africa's vision to ensure a seamless information infrastructure by 2030 for an inclusive knowledge economy.

In addition, Nokia and rain have agreed to collaborate on deploying the 5G network with Nokia's end-to-end 5G solutions including optical fronthaul transport products and its Fixed Wireless Access FastMile 5G Gateway. Nokia's FastMile 5G Gateway is a home solution that brings high speeds to homes using 3GPP compliant 5G New Radio.

The 5G network opens the door for new applications and services that rely on ultra-high speeds and ultra-low latency, such as virtual reality, augmented reality and artificial intelligence for improved education, healthcare, entertainment, and more.

 

The rollout will continue through 2020 to extend the network to more areas. Later this year the network will also support a variety of 5G use cases when commercial 5G end-user devices become available. This initiative paves the way for the introduction of 5G services in the entire country.

New Delhi, India - Nokia's Nuage Networks VSP solution will be deployed by Bharti Airtel ("Airtel"), India's leading telecommunications services provider, in 15 circles (service areas) in the northern and southern part of the country to automate its data center networks. Once deployed, the Nuage Networks VSP solution will allow Airtel to provide new and exciting services, including Voice over LTE (VoLTE) and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), ensuring customer delight. 

India has been recording unprecedented growth in data and this requires that service providers, like Airtel, increase the number of data centers. Further, they need to take the data centers closer to their subscribers to meet capacity demand and deliver best-in-class user experience. This is also driven by the need to prepare the networks for new technologies like 5G and Internet of Things (IoT).

Nuage Networks VSP is the critical component in Nokia's end-to-end Software Defined Networking (SDN) solution that enables automation across the data center and transport networks. It helps by adding agility and flexibility to networks, making them more responsive.

Riyadh, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia - Nokia and Dawiyat Integrated Telecommunications and Information Technology Company, part of Saudi Electricity Corporation (SEC), will collaborate on multiple projects to develop the ecosystem for Industry 4.0 in the country. Nokia's path-breaking solutions and Dawiyat Integrated's vision will together help in building infrastructure for the next generation of services.

 

Industry 4.0 technologies such as Internet of Things, robotics, augmented intelligence and automation support digital transformation, which enables significant gains in productivity, efficiency, safety and sustainability.

 

Under the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), Nokia and Dawiyat Integrated will work together on multiple initiatives:

  • 10 million smart meters to serve the citizens and businesses all over the Kingdom in accordance with the NTP 2020. Nokia's solutions and expertise will help Dawiyat Integrated to better manage the infrastructure and use analytics for an improved customer experience.
  • Nokia and Dawiyat Integrated will jointly explore working to deploy Industry 4.0 infrastructure and smart industrial solutions to enable companies to benefit from increased productivity and efficiency with integrated infrastructure and services.
  • Nokia will also be one of the technology partners for deployment of a Gigabit Passive Optical Networking (GPON) and IP Multi Protocol Label Switching (IP/MPLS) communications infrastructure for Dawiyat Integrated FTTH infrastructure.
  • In addition, Nokia and Dawiyat will collaborate to develop solutions to help the mining industry use digital solutions to adapt to fluctuations in demand, better control operational expenditures and enhance safety.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that CTC and Nokia jointly demonstrate advanced machine learning innovations for 5G RAN mMIMO optimization. Under the strategic cooperation agreement between CTC and Nokia signed in October 2018. The ML powered mMIMO algorithms will improve 5G RAN coverage and capacity and provide higher throughput and spectral efficiency.

 

The average data usage by CTC (China Telecommunications Corporation) 4G customers is growing quickly. This is driving the need for 5G mobile networks, for which CTC is one of the leading providers in the Chinese market. To fully realize the performance gains possible with 5G, massive MIMO (mMIMO) techniques are used in the RAN.

 

Nokia and CTC signed a strategic cooperation agreement in October 2018, to develop AI/ML applications for 5G RAN. This advanced 5G ML powered mMIMO scheduler at MWC 2019 is one of the first results from the joint team and showcases CTC and Nokia's industry leadership in this area.  Nokia developed the original AI/ML-based algorithm and working closely with the CTC team analyzed the performance improvement potential for 5G network and built the proof-of-concept demo. The ML scheduler provides improved spectral efficiency and better user experience. 

 

Another topic of this engagement is in the indoor location area.  In highly cluttered, multipath indoor environments, RF fingerprint-based positioning is the superior approach.   Nokia has developed AI/ML-based algorithm using RF fingerprint and improved the indoor location precision in cellular network.  In collaboration with CTC Shanghai, CTC and Nokia are working on demonstrating good positioning accuracy in a selected indoor scenario in the future.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that Rakuten has selected its Intelligent Management Platform for All Connected Things (IMPACT) to help the company tap new revenue opportunities through the rollout of Internet of Things (IoT) services across Japan.

 

As an integrated, standards-based platform, IMPACT simplifies the process of bringing and scaling multiple applications onto a single platform. As a result, Rakuten can deploy various IoT applications faster and more cost effectively across multiple sectors such as agriculture, industry and the automotive field, including connected vehicles.

 

Nokia will provide turnkey deployment and integration of the IMPACT platform, leveraging its experience of implementing a complete end-to-end IoT solution for several leading communication service providers around the world.

 

Nokia is working with Rakuten to build vertical specific use cases and a comprehensive IoT ecosystem of its own comprised of industry players, system integrators, software developers and academia. This modular solution will maximize automation, bring in innovation and help Rakuten launch new use cases faster.

 

Further, Nokia's solution will allow Rakuten to conceive and implement unique IoT use cases specific to the Japanese market and differentiate their offerings to B2B and B2C customers while reducing the cost of launching new IoT use cases and operations. Rakuten and Nokia are completely aligned on the IoT vision and it is being implemented in Rakuten's new mobile network operation in Japan.
