Nokia selected by STI to deploy the first industrial-grade LTE private network in a port terminal in Chile

Press Release

Nokia selected by STI to deploy the first industrial-grade LTE private network in a port terminal in Chile

  • The private wireless network, deployed at San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI), will provide broadband connectivity, lower latency and greater predictability.

  • On-premise, high-performance, end-to-end Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) delivers industrial-grade connectivity and edge computing capabilities for digital transformation at the terminal.

November 30, 2022

Santiago de Chile, Chile – Nokia today announced that it will deploy the first industrial-grade LTE private network in a port terminal in Chile at San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI).

The new private wireless network will be based on the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) platform and will use 4.9G LTE to deliver pervasive high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity, and improved network predictability in piers and yards. It will reliably and securely connect hundreds of workers, sensors, equipment and vehicles across an area of 31 hectares. As the single supplier for this project, Nokia will also provide the RAN network, training, implementation services and remote support.

Nokia DAC is an innovative, high-performance, end-to-end private wireless network and edge computing platform designed to meet the mission-critical needs of asset-intensive industries such as port terminals. The platform will enable future use cases such as remote and autonomous crane operations within the piers and yards, as well as enable new capabilities at STI.

San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI) is the main port terminal in Chile and one of the most important port terminals in South America. It is also the closest port to all the main cities in Chile, only 110 km. from Santiago through highway 78; and also connected to many key production centers in Southern Chile.

STI's goal is to move towards becoming a digital port and the basis for this is to have a state-of-the-art, high-performance network for industrial use, which will allow -for example- transmission of data with higher quality, five times faster and with more reach. In this way, it will continue to optimize its operation and service, catching up with the main ports in the world.

Marcelo Entreconti, Head of Enterprise for Latin America, Nokia, said: "By deploying an industrial-grade private wireless network at San Antonio Terminal Internacional S.A. (STI), the port will have a robust, secure and predictable wireless connectivity platform. With this project, STI takes an important step in its digitalization journey, improving safety and productivity with a future-ready platform also capable of supporting digitalization and automation use cases."

Nokia has deployed mission-critical networks to more than 2,200 leading enterprise customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, ports, webscale, and public sector segments around the globe. We have also extended our expertise to more than 485+ large private wireless customers worldwide across an array of sectors, and have been cited by numerous industry analysts as the leading provider of private wireless networking worldwide.

  • New Voice Core network is aligned with 5G standards and will allow Vodafone New Zealand subscribers and international tourists to enjoy high-quality voice services
  • The initiative builds on the existing 30-year partnership between Nokia and Vodafone New Zealand

30 November 2022

Auckland, New Zealand – Nokia today announced that Vodafone New Zealand will extend Nokia's Voice Core services to an additional one million subscribers across the country. The deployment will allow more New Zealanders to enjoy voice services at home and overseas as well as enable tourists to enjoy high-quality voice services during their stay in the country.

Vodafone New Zealand is already using Nokia's high-performance Voice Core services for one million subscribers. The superior quality of the existing network using Nokia solution helped Vodafone New Zealand record exceptional results in the recent Umlaut tests.

Nokia will also supply its NetAct application for network management and seamless daily network operations as well as its Voice Core network solution to help Vodafone New Zealand extend superior voice services to more subscribers and tourists.

The initiative is the next phase of the existing program, where Vodafone New Zealand and Nokia transformed the end customer voice experience by providing Voice Core services on a fully virtualized core network.

This extended program will further improve the resiliency and redundancy of Vodafone New Zealand's Voice Core network and ensure that the network is always using the latest software. It will also introduce VoLTE roaming which has become crucial as several operators are shutting down legacy 2G and 3G networks to improve cost economics and to use the spectrum for 5G.

Sharina Nisha, Head of Networks at Vodafone New Zealand, said: "At Vodafone we're helping customers unlock the magic of technology, better connecting them through our award winning Smart Network. We're delighted to build on Nokia's solution to provide Voice Core services to our subscribers by extending high-definition voice services to an additional million users. This crucial project is another great step forward in our 30-year partnership with Nokia, delivering a more awesome Aotearoa through innovation for both local customers and our very welcome visitors to New Zealand."

Rob Joyce, Chief Technology Officer at Nokia Australia and New Zealand, said: "We are excited to expand our long-standing partnership with Vodafone New Zealand and to support this initiative to extend Voice Core services to an additional million subscribers. Our innovative Voice Core allows service providers to provide superior voice services to their customers. It also allows them to continue offering roaming services even when the 2G and 3G networks are being phased out."

Nokia and Orange France complete world’s first 20 Gbps microwave carrier aggregation link trial using E-Band and traditional frequencies

Press Release

Nokia and Orange France complete world's first 20 Gbps microwave carrier aggregation link trial using E-Band and traditional frequencies

29 November 2022

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has extended its collaboration with Orange France to upgrade its microwave backhaul network with the latest product generation. Combining the capabilities of Nokia's latest high-power E-Band microwave and traditional microwave frequency products, the trial enabled a high-capacity link over a distance of almost 4 kilometers.

The trial successfully demonstrated the use of microwave carrier aggregation techniques, achieving a throughput of 20 Gbps over a distance of 3.6 km. This was enabled by combining the carriers from two microwave radios operating in the 18 GHz band with two E-Band microwave radios operating at 80 GHz, using a single dual-band (18+80 GHz) antenna.

In addition to new products from its Wavence microwave portfolio, Nokia will provide Orange France with a range of products and services from its comprehensive AirScale 5G radio access portfolio, as well as a state-of-the-art network management solution and associated professional services.

The Nokia Wavence portfolio includes innovative, high-capacity ultra-broadband microwave transceivers, designed to support operators as they build out their 5G networks. Wavence products support the evolution of both backhaul and fronthaul with multi-gigabit capacity, low-latency characteristics, and industry-leading RF power output for deployment flexibility.

Christian Gacon, CTO Fixed/IP/Optical/Microwave Networks at Orange France, said: "Nokia's innovative Wavence portfolio and microwave technology will ensure that we can deliver high-capacity services and experiences to our customers over long distances, which is critical as the usage of 5G increases. This technology will support Orange's ambition to remain the indisputable best network in France. I look forward to continuing our partnership with Nokia moving forward."

Giuseppe Targia, VP Transport Business Unit, Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: "High-performance microwave backhaul is essential for extending the reach of 5G networks. I am extremely proud to continue our work with Orange France into the 5G era, with our Wavence portfolio providing a solid foundation for the operator's 5G services all across the country. Nokia, Inria extend research partnership to address future challenges facing networks and distributed computing

Press Release

Nokia, Inria extend research partnership to address future challenges facing networks and distributed computing

  • Common research lab focuses on human, society and industrial needs in all contexts of communications and computing.
  • 4 year collaboration to address key challenges for the future of smart networking and edge computing.
  • Partnership will create 15 new PhD student and post-doctoral researcher employment opportunities at Nokia Bell Labs and Inria.

24 November 2022

Paris, France Nokia and Inria today announced the renewal of their common research lab for the next four years. The new phase was launched at an event in Paris on 14 November in the presence of Thierry Klein, President, Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research, and Bruno Sportisse, Inria CEO.

Launched in 2008, the joint research lab brings together permanent scientists from the two partners with a newly created pool of PhD and post-doctoral scientists, with the strategic aim to solve the key scientific challenges linked to the evolution of networks and network applications. The focus of the joint research is on the benefits of network and distributed resources for contextual and personalized experiences in the digital connected world.

Future networks will have to connect digital, physical and human worlds to unleash the innate potential of human beings in the metaverse era. Networks will need to have the ability to optimize for a very wide range of customer-specific needs, for example, in industrial applications. The network will develop heightened sensing capabilities, and increased context-awareness in terms of user status and intent, dynamically and automatically adapting connectivity to meet user needs.

The networks will be 100% cloud-native, supporting a distributed architecture. Efficiency, resilience, and agility are critical attributes, with zero-touch management and orchestration achieved though artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) -driven autonomy. Devices may not be able to meet all compute needs and will rely on a combination of edge cloud and local near-device computing, resulting in a massively distributed computing architecture. Diversified applications and services will need stringent quality of service requirements, enabled by data/AI-native networks in a highly distributed computing and data environment.

The Nokia Bell Labs-Inria collaboration will contribute to solving these challenges by addressing three aspects:

  • Distributed learning over 6G: with the aim of enabling diverse AI applications operating in a distributed and cooperative way all over the system (core, network, edge, device), continuously learning and evolving.
  • AI-based smart network management: with the aim of providing analytics and trustworthy AI/ML for 5G-Advanced and 6G zero touch mobile network resource management.
  • Network aware industrial applications: with the aim of optimizing and adapting industrial applications, such as cloud based robotic applications based on network performance and availability.

Thierry Klein, President of Nokia Bell Labs Solutions Research, said: "Inria and Nokia Bell Labs have enjoyed a rich and fruitful relationship for more than 20 years. Inria is part of the Bell Labs Distinguished Academic Partners program, engaging the best and brightest minds from the world's top universities and academic organizations to collaborate with us on transforming human existence. This new phase of our collaboration addresses the strategic challenges of the future digital connected world infrastructure and applications, and we are excited about the collaborative advantages of this continued partnership for Nokia, our industry, and society to enable enhanced experiences in a digitalized world."

Bruno Sportisse, CEO of Inria, said: "Nokia Bell Labs is one of our major strategic partners and I am pleased that we are strengthening our partnership. For Inria, working with a world leader with a European footprint such as Nokia is one of our priorities, whether to position ourselves on major scientific topics, to maintain joint scientific and technological excellence, or to have an impact on the scale of our work. The gradual evolution of our partnership also shows the importance of building long-term relationships based on trust, within a joint strategy and roadmap. Together with Nokia, we will work on the new frontiers for 6G mobile networks, which pose new technological and theoretical challenges, where software design and data exchange must be jointly addressed.
