Nokia Life surpasses 95 million global user milestone and debuts in the African country

Barcelona, Spain - Nokia today announced that Nokia Life, one of the most popular mobile services for high growth markets, will launch in Kenya, one of Africa's largest economies. Continuing on its path to connect 'the next billion and beyond', Nokia Life services will be available to the subscribers of Kenya's leading mobile operators, Safaricom and Airtel.

Nokia Life is one of the most popular life improvement information services suites specifically designed for people in fast growth, emerging markets. The service quickly expanded to China, Indonesia and Nigeria, offering daily tips and actionable advice on topics such as education, health, infotainment and agriculture, delivered to millions of people. Nokia Life services have since been experienced by more than 95 million people in 18 local languages, through content co-developed by more than 90 knowledge partners including academics, local and national governments and NGOs.

The expansion to Kenya recognises a significant opportunity to reach a young and aspirational population, for whom the mobile phone is an essential, everyday tool. Nokia Life is an easy-to-use service, delivered as richly formatted messages to engage people, facilitate learning and help bridge information gaps that impact their quality of life. In Kenya, Nokia Life will offer a full suite of services under the Education, Health, Spirituality and Entertainment categories. These include services like Learn English, developed in partnership with the British Council; Life Skills, developed with Foundation for Social Change; and Parenting Advice, developed with Plan International.

Developers harness Nokia enablers for exclusive application experiences

Latest imaging, location and social applications deliver many features unique to Nokia

- Burton and GoPro build exclusive experiences using Nokia imaging technology enablers

- Exclusive Foursquare for Nokia Lumia app leverages voice integration and augmented reality technology

- WhatsApp amplifies reach with Nokia Asha dual SIM family

- Modernized Foursquare and Line apps introduced for Nokia Asha smartphones

- Exclusive Tumblr experience developed for Windows Phone 8

- JobLens uses augmented reality to revolutionize work searching

Barcelona, Spain - Today at Mobile World Congress, Nokia announced a range of new applications for Nokia Lumia and Nokia Asha devices, many using unique platform and device enablers to deliver better quality application experiences.

To encourage further innovation, Nokia also announced the Asha Developer Competition, a contest to encourage developers to create high quality applications for Nokia Asha Touch smartphones. The competition is open to mobile developers worldwide and will award cash prizes and Nokia promotions for winning applications in four categories: music and entertainment; games; utilities and productivity; and news and information. The new apps will be judged on creativity, user experience and market potential.

"Quality is at the center of our strategy with developers," said Marco Argenti, senior vice president, Developer Experience. "By making available key technology enablers in location, music and imaging we help developers do their best work for Nokia. Quality, tailor-made apps translate into increased consumer engagement, which is the key for ecosystem success."

Taking advantage of imaging innovation

The GoPro Windows Phone 8 app allows action sports enthusiasts to connect their Nokia Lumia 920 via WiFi to a GoPro HERO3 or HERO2 camera. They receive a live preview with which they can record videos and capture photos, access and change all of the camera settings, and view the latest videos and photos of the day. The Nokia exclusive picture-in-picture (PIP) feature overlays the Nokia Lumia camera view on top of the GoPro camera's live view and allows consumers to capture photos using Nokia's industry-leading camera technology.

"Delivering top-flight image quality is at the heart of everything GoPro does," said Justin Wilkenfeld, Senior Director of Lifestyle Marketing, GoPro. "The combination of Nokia's best-in-class camera technologies and the Windows Phone 8 platform allows our consumers to do more with their HERO3 and HERO2 cameras. That's one of the reasons we're committed to offering new features to our Windows Phone 8 app." The GoPro Windows Phone 8 app will be available this spring from the Microsoft Windows Phone Store.

The Burton app is the ultimate snowboarding companion, featuring Burton Sequencer, a camera lens that leverages Nokia imaging technology to combine a sequence of action shots taken with the Nokia Lumia camera in a single photo. Burton Forecast provides up-to-the minute snow and weather conditions at favorite ski resorts. Coming soon, Burton Friends will feature an augmented reality-based friend finder, making it easy to locate friends on the slopes. The app also boasts Burton Tune up, a feature that leverages Nokia Music APIs to enable consumers to listen to a continuously updated selection of Burton finest playlists from within the application.

"Our collaboration with Nokia continues to give our customers around the world the best possible experience on any mobile platform," said Nick Sargent, Global Director of Strategic Alliances at Burton. "We are committed to providing Burton customers with the best entertainment, location data and information. Nokia's apps capabilities are world-class, and that is evident through the innovative features of the Burton app."

The latest augmented reality, location, NFC, and app-to-app functionality

Nokia and Foursquare collaborated on two Foursquare app variants for Windows Phone. First to market, and available for all Windows Phone 8 devices, will be a version with new features, including voice integration, which allows people to use voice commands to detect what's trending and to search nearby places. The app will be NFC-enabled for content sharing, friend requests, and check-ins. It also integrates with Nokia Maps for a seamless app-to-app experience.

Nokia will also bring to market a second version of Foursquare, exclusive to Nokia Lumia. This version includes the capabilities of the one available for all Windows Phone 8 devices, and adds augmented reality to enhance the discovery experience through Nokia Lumia camera lenses.

Foursquare also plans to introduce a modernized app experience for Nokia Asha smartphones. "Nokia is a valued partner for Foursquare," said Dennis Crowley, CEO and co-founder of Foursquare. "Nokia's mobile platform expertise, massive consumer and distribution reach, and commitment to work with us make it possible to deliver a great user experience to the Foursquare community. We are looking forward to seeing the Windows Phone 8 and Asha apps go live around the world in late Q1 and early Q2, 2013."

The highly anticipated official Tumblr Windows Phone 8 app will soon be available for all Windows Phone and Nokia Lumia customers. The Tumblr app will allow on-the-go posting of text, images, video, audio, links, quotes, and chats, and will let people follow and experience the world's creators seamlessly through the Tumblr dashboard. Additional features include Windows Phone exclusive voice command integration and use of Live Tiles to display the Tumblr Dashboard.

"We're excited to offer Tumblr to millions of creators worldwide on the Windows Phone platform," said Derek Gottfrid, Tumblr's VP of Product. "Windows Phone offers a fresh and fast-growing opportunity for our community to create and share what they love with the world."

JobLens connects the physical world with social networks to revolutionize the way job-seekers find employment. The app integrates camera functionality with augmented reality and Nokia Maps to offer a 'Jobs Near Me' function, which shows job openings inside office buildings and establishments based on the consumer's location. It also makes it easy to get to job interviews with 'Get You There' navigation and to find jobs with Indeed, the world's most comprehensive search engine for jobs. Featuring patent pending technology, JobLens personalizes the job search using social connections from sources such as LinkedIn and uses proprietary algorithms to drive recommendations and geo-tag job listings. Consumers will be able to check salary ranges with data from Salary.com and neighborhood demographics from Zillow. The app will actively push recommended jobs based on a consumer's profile and search history, allow people to pin jobs-based Live Tiles to their Start screen, share jobs with friends, and store resumes in SkyDrive.

Better social experiences

WhatsApp, which supports Nokia Asha single SIM smartphones, will soon offer support for Asha dual SIM and unveil new features that deep link to the platform. WhatsApp will also continue its development on Windows Phone 8 with new features and a new user experience.

"Nokia has been an important partner to WhatsApp for many years," said Neeraj Arora, VP of Business Development, WhatsApp Inc. "Delivering WhatsApp on Nokia Asha dual SIM smartphones in early Q2, while building on the momentum with Nokia Lumia for Windows Phone 8, fulfills our goals of ensuring that our customers around the world can continue to communicate seamlessly with the most important people in their lives. We look forward to great things ahead with Nokia."

Line is a messaging application for smartphones known for its lovable sticker characters. For its first Asha app, Line will unveil four varieties of default stickers - Moon, Cony, Brown and James - while enabling 1:1 chat and group chat.

"The cooperation with a global player such as Nokia is indeed an honor," said Morikawa Akira, CEO of NHN Japan. "The partnership opportunity with Nokia on Asha smartphones will serve as an important platform for improving awareness towards Line's global service and attracting more new consumers internationally. After making Line publicly available in March of 2013, we look forward to working with Nokia to deliver more capabilities for Asha smartphone consumers in the future."

Nokia Lumia 720 and Nokia Lumia 520 expand Nokia's Windows Phone 8 portfolio

Nokia Lumia 720The Nokia Lumia 720 delivers a high-end camera performance at a mid-range price point. A large f/1.9 aperture and exclusive Carl Zeiss optics are designed to deliver bright, clear pictures day and night, while the HD-quality, wide-angle front-facing camera makes taking pictures with friends and video calling more enjoyable. The sleek and stylish smartphone comes with the latest high-end Nokia Lumia experiences, including Nokia Music, the HERE location suite, and the option to add wireless charging with a snap-on wireless charging cover.

The Nokia Lumia 720 comes in five colors, with an estimated starting price of EUR 249 before taxes and subsidies. Rollout is planned to start in Hong Kong, Vietnam and Singapore in Q1 2013, before continuing into broader markets in Q2, including China as well as key markets in Europe, Asia, Africa and India.

Nokia Lumia 520The Nokia Lumia 520 is Nokia's most affordable Windows Phone 8 smartphone, delivering experiences normally only found in high-end smartphones, such as the same digital camera lenses found on the flagship Nokia Lumia 920, Nokia Music for free music out of the box and even offline, and the HERE location suite. A four-inch super sensitive touchscreen makes for a more responsive and immersive content experience than can usually be found at this price.

The Nokia Lumia 520 comes in five colors, with an estimated starting price of EUR 139, before taxes and subsidies. Roll-out is planned to begin in Q1 2013 in Hong Kong and Vietnam, before expanding broadly in Q2 to markets in Europe, Asia - including China and India - Latin America and Africa. The Nokia Lumia 520 is also planned to roll out in the United States with T-Mobile.

The Nokia 105 is available in black and cyan for a recommended price of EUR 15. It is planned to start rolling out in Q1 2013  and is expected to be gradually expanded to in China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, Russia, Vietnam and other markets in Africa, Middle East, Asia-Pacific and Europe.

HERE expands its reach

The new HERE Maps come with LiveSight(TM), Nokia's set of augmented-reality technologies. LiveSight(TM) uses "sight" as a fundamentally new way to discover and navigate the world, recognizing what people see through their phone's camera and layering that view with relevant, place-based information. LiveSight(TM) also powers Place Tag, a new digital lens introduced for Lumia today. Combining Nokia's unique capabilities in location and imaging, Place Tag adds location stamps to photos with relevant information about pictured places.

Nokia Conversations has more on the HERE news.

Developers gain access to exclusive Nokia technology

Nokia announced that with more than 130 000 applications now available on Windows Phone, it is opening up its APIs in imaging, location and music to encourage developers to build unique and innovative application experiences for Lumia. New apps from Burton, GoPro and FourSquare are already taking advantage of these opportunities, while Nokia announced a new cooperation with Dreamworks Animations SKG. The cooperation will see Dreamworks developers use Nokia APIs to deliver rich, interactive entertainment experiences, exclusively for Nokia devices, starting from the second half of 2013.

Finally, Nokia and Microsoft are sharpening their focus on bringing business customers from competitor platforms to Windows Phone using the combined strength of Windows Phone 8 and the popular appeal of Nokia Lumia smartphones. These apps integrate with the mall's existing Microsoft services, enabling Mall of America management team members to review and edit Outlook emails and Microsoft Office documents on their smartphones, wherever they happen to be.

"Switching to the Nokia Lumia 920 has increased productivity for key team members. The combination of a great smartphone with built-in Microsoft Office suite enables our team to work collaboratively, and SkyDrive ensures we can back up and access our work, wherever we are and whenever we want," says Janette Smrcka, I.T. Director at Mall of America.

"With more than 400 events every year, from music acts to celebrity book signings, the ability to capture, edit and share images from the Nokia Lumia 920's PureView camera enables team members to provide instant high-quality imagery and real time updates to social media fans and our business customers. When you combine this with all of the Windows Phone 8 platform's business capabilities, at a price we can afford, we've got a device we're really proud to use," concludes Janette.

The Nokia Lumia 920's Live Tiles offer intelligent, interactive apps, showing the latest emails, news, documents and people updates as they happen, so that at one touch of a tile, management team members can reach key people, stay organized and collaborate with colleagues. The People Hub in Windows Phone 8 further helps organize teams, allowing staff to set-up groups, work together innovatively, and stay in touch with co-workers across text, Facebook, Twitter, instant messaging and email.

"Mall of America is a great example of how all the business features of the Nokia Lumia 920, combined with its social capabilities, can make a great work device," said Stephanie Mosticchio, enterprise sales manager for North America at Nokia. "The Windows Phone 8 platform has meant the company's employees have been able to transition quickly, due to its built-in and familiar Microsoft Outlook and Office Mobile applications. From the intuitive integration with Microsoft services, to Live Tiles and People Hub making it easy to stay close to what matters, all wrapped in the beautiful polycarbonate body of the Nokia Lumia 920, it offers everything a mobile workforce could ask for."

Foxtons feels at home with Nokia Lumia

Foxtons feels at home with Nokia Lumia

London, England and Espoo, Finland - Foxtons, London's leading estate agent, has chosen the Nokia Lumia 820 as its business smartphone and has so far deployed around 900 to its employees.

With 35 offices throughout London and two in Surrey, Foxtons let and sell around 1,400 properties every month. In such a fast-paced, competitive environment, the need for Foxtons agents to receive, update and share information quickly while on the road is critical to its success.

An important reason for Foxtons' switch to Nokia Lumia was its tight integration with the company's existing Microsoft infrastructure. Foxtons uses Microsoft Outlook to ensure that employees are armed with complete property information for each calendar appointment, so that at the touch of a button they have all the material they need to close a deal. And easy synchronisation means that any appointments made at Foxtons head office can be quickly transferred to the agents' smartphones.

Between viewings, agents can check emails, make targeted calls and prepare for their next appointment, maximising their time out of the office and keeping them one step ahead of the competition. The built-in Microsoft Office applications on Windows Phone 8 mean that they can also work on Excel spreadsheets and edit Word documents whilst away from their office PCs.

This competitive edge is vital for Foxtons, whose in-house development team was already familiar with developing applications in the Microsoft Windows environment and has now begun deploying its own apps for the Nokia Lumia 820.

As Dan Rafferty, IT Director of Foxtons, explains: "In a fast moving business with many staff movements across departments and locations, keeping an accurate, up-to-date contact list is a challenge for us. We've developed an app integrating our personnel system with our active directory and phone system so all the information is accurate and can be accessed directly from our agents' Nokia Lumia 820s. It's a great timesaver and asset for the team. The Nokia Lumia 820 aligns with our entire device strategy and allows us to fully integrate our current Microsoft systems throughout the company."

With agents covering large areas, the mobile navigation features of the Nokia Lumia 820 were also an important factor in the switch to Lumia. Nokia Drive offers free turn-by-turn navigation with live traffic updates and offline maps, removing the need for separate satnavs or an A-Z. When showing prospective clients around a property, agents can use Nokia City Lens to show live information on the local area, showcasing points of interest and amenities including leisure centres, cinemas, restaurants and shops. Foxtons agents can now have everything they need to know about the area in the palm of their hand.

Adrian Williams, director of Business Sales UK at Nokia, said: "Foxtons is a great example of how a company can empower its workforce to work effectively on the move, with their smartphones integrated with its existing Microsoft infrastructure. We are delighted that Nokia applications such as Nokia Drive and Nokia City Lens are making a real difference for Foxtons employees in the competitive real estate market."
