TDC Group and Nokia increase Danish broadband speeds to deliver better customer experience

NOKIA

TDC Group and Nokia increase Danish broadband speeds to deliver better customer experience

Press Release

  • TDC Group doubles copper broadband network speeds with addition of Vplus technology to existing VDSL2 vectoring network
  • This supports TDC Groups aim to deliver the best connections to Danes, and offer new services at increased speeds to citizens and enterprises throughout Denmark

November 28, 2016

Espoo, Finland - Danish Telecommunications provider TDC Group and Nokia are upgrading the Danish broadband network to deliver ultra-broadband speeds, new service bundles and a renewed customer experience to citizens and enterprises across the country. This ultra-broadband fixed network is a step towards realizing the digital society TDC Group is aiming for, connecting people throughout the country, building smart cities and helping businesses grow. It will bring faster upload and download speeds, a better IPTV experience, and faster and more efficient cloud services for businesses.

In order to deliver these ultra-broadband speeds, TDC Group is rolling out VDSL2 35b Vplus technology, building further on its existing VDSL2 Vectoring network. This technology is a perfect match for operators who need to deliver the highest possible speeds in a cost-effective way on medium-length loops. Moving from VDSL2 17a (vectoring) to VDSL2 35b (Vplus) requires only a simple upgrade to the existing Nokia DSLAMs and can be done seamlessly and quickly.

Peter Trier Schleidt, COO, at TDC Group, commented: "We have a clear ambition to offer the best connections to the Danes. Regardless of where its subscribers live, TDC Group offers a mobile, broadband and TV solution. We want to do even better, particularly for rural areas, and therefore we are very pleased that  Vplus technology lets us use our old copper connections in new ways to benefit our customers. We expect many customers to experience a clear improvement in their broadband speeds and entertainment offerings when we roll out Vplus technology."

Federico Guillén, president of Nokia's Fixed Networks Group, added: "The need for speed is driven by human impatience. Broadband subscribers want ever-higher speeds to enjoy video, gaming, cloud services and the like. The fastest way to get there is by a phased approach and gradual upgrades of the existing copper network infrastructure, which allows service providers like TDC to bring much higher speeds to more people in a much shorter timeframe."

Did you know?

  • Vplus doubles VDSL2 spectrum from 17 to 35MHz for as much as double the speed on intermediate loop lengths, making it ideal for Fiber-to-the-cabinet deployments.
    • Vplus fills the gap between VDSL2 vectoring and G.fast with aggregate speeds of 200 Mbps+ up to 500 meters and 300 Mbps+ up to 250 meters.
    • Nokia brought Vplus to the ITU for adoption and it is now standardized as the VDSL2 35b profile.
    • Nokia was first to market Vplus products. In the meantime, we deployed 9 commercial Vplus networks and conducted another 13 Vplus trials around the world.
    • According to a report from the OECD dated December 2015, Denmark has the second biggest fixed broadband penetration in the world of 42.4%, about half of which is on copper including Fiber-to-the-cabinet, and the rest divided over coax and fiber.

Products

As part of the contract, Nokia will be providing Nokia 7302 ISAM FD Equipment, with VDSL2 35b Vplus technology, and upgrading the existing Nokia 7330 ISAM FD shelves where needed with Vplus capable line cards.

European Aviation Network (EAN) is airborne!

NOKIA

European Aviation Network (EAN) is airborne!

Press release

  • Ground-breaking broadband solution for airline passengers integrates satellite and LTE-based terrestrial network for superior performance
  • Key milestones achieved for project, as test flight is successfully conducted in UK and live over-the-air connection achieved in Germany
  • Construction of S-band satellite and rollout of approximately 300 LTE sites across Europe remains on track

28 November 2016

Bonn, Germany, London, UK, Espoo, Finland - The European Aviation Network (EAN) has taken to the skies. Inmarsat and Deutsche Telekom, together with their technology partners Nokia and Thales have successfully conducted a programme of test flights in the UK.

This is a major milestone in the development of EAN, the world's first integrated satellite and air-to-ground network dedicated to providing a true in-flight broadband experience for the European aviation industry and for millions of passengers travelling across Europe.

EAN is planned for introduction in mid-2017. The flights serve to test the performance of the EAN system including the onboard equipment being provided by Thales and the ground network provided by Deutsche Telekom and Nokia.

As a precursor to the test flight series, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia jointly achieved the first EAN live over-the-air connection, in Nokia's Stuttgart laboratory. There, all components of the LTE ground network were thoroughly tested and validated. The first live connection in the field was accomplished in a broadband video conference with both parties connected via the dedicated EAN LTE mobile network.

"We are happy that we achieved a major milestone in building the European Aviation Network. With these successful tests we once more underline our goal to be the leading European telecommunications operator," says Claudia Nemat, Board Member Europe and Technology at Deutsche Telekom. "The EAN allows us to offer our customers outstanding connectivity services not only on the ground but also in the sky. The new technology based on LTE standard makes sure that EAN is flexible for any further technology developments in the future. Deutsche Telekom's aim is to drive technology leadership to bring best network experience to our customers."

Leo Mondale, President of Aviation, Inmarsat said: "EAN is progressing extremely well, both on the ground as well as in the air, to achieve the world's first integrated service providing true in-flight broadband experience. The actual performance and quality of the in-flight datalink exceeds design expectations and is truly game changing for European airlines.  We look forward to further successful testing milestones working with all the EAN partners to bring together this integrated system."

Thorsten Robrecht, Vice President, Advanced Mobile Networks Solutions at Nokia says "Nokia is extremely excited to be a pillar of the European Aviation Network project. As a global leader in communications technology, we are looking forward to the close cooperation of these distinguished partners to transform the passenger experience and deliver new services with advanced in-flight connectivity."

"We are very proud of our employees who have helped make the first flight trial a huge success and look forward to working with our partners to bring high-speed broadband to passengers and operators across Europe," says Stephen McCann, Vice President, Avionics at Thales.

Innovation in the skies, from the ground up

To achieve EAN's live connection of the LTE ground network, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia have adapted Nokia's LTE base stations and Remote Radio Heads (RRH) to the frequency used for EAN, provided by Inmarsat, and build a specific base station antenna to cover the sky. The LTE ground network for EAN differs from "normal" LTE networks as it needs to work at speeds of up to 1,200 km/h, at cruising altitudes requiring cells of up to 150 km. Nokia will manage the operations for this advanced network from its global delivery centre in Romania.  In addition to the live network, Nokia and Deutsche Telekom set up a full end-to-end ground network reference system in Stuttgart, Germany, including all components and integrated on-board equipment from partner Thales, to prepare for technical challenges, for example compensation of the Doppler effect due to high aircraft speeds.

The flight trial tested the performance of the onboard equipment being provided by Thales and the ground network provided by Deutsche Telekom and Nokia. Tests were performed to see if the network could successfully attach to the ground system, which it did at all four test sites located in the south west of the UK.

The systems performed multiple successful handovers between sectors and cell towers, and maintained a stable connection. The transfer of data to and from the aircraft was also tested. The outcomes have exceeded expectations for this early flight trial and provided valuable data for the development teams.

Notes to Editors

Europe, we've got you covered

The European Aviation Network (EAN) is an innovative integrated S-band satellite and complementary LTE-based terrestrial network across Europe that will bring unprecedented passenger connectivity to the aviation industry.  It is unique in the capacity and quality of broadband internet service it brings to the dense European aviation routes; in a very small and lightweight form factor that typical broadband satellite based solutions cannot offer. Since the initial announcement of EAN in September 2015, Deutsche Telekom and Nokia have made steady progress and are on track to deliver the ground component of the project, with the on-schedule rollout of the approximately 300 antenna sites and connecting the network live over-the-air. In parallel, Inmarsat and Thales are advancing with implementing the satellite communication for EAN, having completed construction and associated sub-system tests of the satellite earlier this year. With the test flight program now underway, the EAN will be introduced in mid-2017.

Nokia collaborates with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority to pave way for safe and sustainable drone operations in the country

Press Release

  • Nokia and the UAE's GCAA to develop end-to-end ecosystem to support regular commercial use of an unmanned aerial system (UAS) in the UAE
  • Nokia's unmanned aerial vechicle (UAV) Traffic Management concept will give GCAA ability to track and manage all UAS in UAE airspace, supporting use of automated drones for both commercial and government applications
  • Project will enable the UAE to become the world's first country to allow UAS usage in safe and secure environment and embrace drone technology as part of smart city operations

21 November 2016

Dubai, UAE - Nokia and the United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) have entered into a strategic collaboration to drive the development of an end-to-end UAS ecosystem that will make the UAE the first country in the world to allow the operation of drones by both businesses and government agencies in a safe, secure and managed environment. The project is part of an initiative by the GCAA to make Dubai one of the world's smartest cities by 2017, and will allow Dubai government security network operator Nedaa to develop a next generation network for mission-critical and smart city services within the GCAA regulatory framework.

At the heart of this new ecosystem will be Nokia's UAV Traffic Management (UTM) concept, which is being developed to manage drones in and around cities, and coordinate their interactions with people, manned aircraft and an increasingly diverse array of connected objects. The Nokia UTM system will provide capabilities such as automated flight permissions, no-fly zone control and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) that are critical for the safe operation of UAVs in densely populated urban areas. The ecosystem will also serve as a testing ground for various applications of drone technology, which can be explored in a safe and controlled environment.

Drones are quickly emerging as important tools for businesses and governments alike, providing substantial benefits such as infrastructure monitoring and maintenance, public safety applications, logistics and transport and many more. The GCAA has launched this initiative so businesses and local government can take advantage of these benefits, making the city smarter while minimizing any hazards that UAVs may present.

Nokia's UTM concept combines its expertise in 4G LTE and leadership in developing 5G and Mobile Edge Computing and related services - including managing the Network Operations Center, planning and optimizing the network for UTM connectivity and integrating UTM to other application platforms - to provide a platform that can support the extreme low latency and exceptional reliability and resiliency needed to manage UAV traffic. The system will be able to monitor airspace and flight paths, and share data between UAVs, operators and air traffic controllers and establish no-fly zones that can be continually refreshed with the latest data.

This agreement complements a recent Nokia's initiative to establish and develop a UAV test facility at Twente Airport in the Netherlands.

Bernard Najm, head of the Middle East Market Unit at Nokia, said: "The UAE is committed to making Dubai the smartest city in the world, and UAVs are expected to play a critical role in this process by supporting a wide variety of smart city services. This collaboration with the GCAA, the first of its kind in the world, gives us a unique and extensive test bed where we can trial and refine our UAV Traffic Management system, and shape the future of UAV management overall. This is an exciting opportunity that builds on our strong relationship with the UAE to help facilitate its smart city journey."

Ismaeil Mohammed Al Blooshi, Assistant Director General of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority, said: "We, as a civil aviation regulator, are pleased to partner with Nokia for such an innovative initiative for the UAE aviation sector and to build a safe and secure drone ecosystem. Being the number 1 aviation industry in the world with regard to safety standards, the UAE has superb aviation infrastructure and is qualified to play a key role in innovative aviation projects such as this drone collaboration."

Did you know?

According ABI Research, by 2025, the commercial sector (including agriculture, industrial inspection, and professional videography applications) will account for more than 70% of all small unmanned aerial systems (sUAS) ecosystem revenues. Nokia is a world leader in communication technologies and its UTM concept using an LTE network is a great enabler for safe and secure usage of drones.
