5G could deliver up to $3.3 trillion of economic and social value in Latin America by 2035

Press Release

5G could deliver up to $3.3 trillion of economic and social value in Latin America by 2035

  • Omdia and Nokia publish an in depth report "Why 5G in Latin America"
  • The report finds 5G is essential to Latin America, facilitating digital transformation, GDP growth and a $9 trillion revolution in productivity

28 August 2020

Espoo, Finland – Omdia and Nokia's "Why 5G in Latin America" report finds 5G will come to Latin America, sooner rather than later. The region lags its peers in productivity and economic growth, both of which will be enhanced by digital transformation. This, in turn, requires significantly enhanced broadband communications, and that leads to 5G which could add $3.3 trillion of value by 2035 and a $9 trillion improvement in productivity.

The report discusses the region's macro-economic performance over the past decade, making the case for digital transformation and ultra-broadband, especially 5G. It highlights the problem: a gap with developed nations in broadband penetration which is not going away. It goes on to show how 5G impacts both consumers and enterprise and why it is essential to the region, country by country and industry by industry. Brazil will see the largest total gain with $1.216 trillion of 5G Economic impact and an increase in productivity of $3,084 trillion. The ICT industry will be most affected in the country with a $241 billion Economic impact.

5G is essential and therefore inevitable, argues the report, and devotes a chapter to getting ready, outlining recommendations for Service Providers such as upgrading 4G to be "5G ready" and pushing fiber deeper into the network. In a continent where 4G only reaches 50% of mobile connections, Policy Makers are encouraged to finish allocating 4G spectrum, to develop a clear spectrum policy roadmap and an infrastructure policy which both encourages and facilitates the private sector to invest in 5G.

Wally Swain, Principal Consultant for Omdia Latin America said: "Latin American countries must diversify their sources of income and jobs into higher value-added activities. Activities including mining and manufacturing must become more productive and 5G will play an important role on this".

Osvaldo Di Campli, Head of Latin America for Nokia, said: "5G is much more than access. With 5G, the security of telecommunications networks will be even more crucial since we'll have millions of sensors connected per square kilometers. When we develop equipment in Nokia, we are addressing network security right on the architecture. We deploy a process we call Design for Security, which means safety and trustworthiness are integral to our products rather than patched on top".

NOKIA: Ameren wins Utility Technology Council APEX award for innovative private LTE trial with Nokia

Press Release

Ameren wins Utility Technology Council APEX award for innovative private LTE trial with Nokia

  • Private LTE (P-LTE) field trial exceeded expectations for performance and scalability requirements for field communications
  • Trial is part of Ameren's digital transformation to provide secure, robust wireless coverage over entire service territory (64,000 sq. miles)

25 August 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Ameren, a US-based utility company, has won the 2020 Utility Technology Council (UTC) APEX award for its groundbreaking Nokia-powered private LTE field trial. The trial, which exceeded performance and scalability expectations, is part of the company's digital transformation journey to a more reliable and sustainable electric grid.

The UTC is a global association focused on the intersection of telecommunications and utility infrastructure. The UTC APEX award recognizes individuals and organizations who have implemented innovative projects, taken actions, or initiated procedures that leverage communications technologies or information systems to make a significant impact on the utility industry.

Ameren, which powers 2.4 million electric customers and more than 900,000 natural gas customers in a 64,000-square-mile area, is installing a robust fiber IP/MPLS network to connect critical assets and operations centers as part of its digital transformation plan. The next stage is to extend communications to support the proliferation of grid control devices that are being deployed for distribution automation (DA) and Internet of Things (IOT) applications. The field trial allowed Ameren to determine if P-LTE technology was the right fit for the company's needs, including whether Nokia's P-LTE could provide the required performance metrics and operational and cost efficiencies required.

Ameren successfully executed the P-LTE field trial in Missouri and Illinois during 2019 to validate 14 use cases for DA and enabling workforce mobility. Each of the use cases represented an old methodology of connectivity being replaced by the new Nokia P-LTE network, which simplified the management and maintenance of the overall communications network by replacing 20 networks with just one. Ameren extended its proven IP/MPLS service, security and maintenance environment over P-LTE to critical grid assets on the edge.

Based upon the trial results, Nokia's P-LTE far exceeded expectations for performance and scalability requirements for field communications. In addition to better than expected technical results, the trial also highlighted the significant daily operational impact. These included a dramatic reduction in the number of networks to support, fewer skillsets to maintain, fewer spares, and fewer maintenance contracts. The integration with the IP/MPLS backbone enabled its well-known service, security and management environment to be extended towards the distribution grid edge with P-LTE which ensures performance and simplifies operations.

Mike Calabrese,  Senior Vice President, Americas, Nokia Enterprise, said: "We're extremely pleased that the UTC is recognizing Ameren for its digital transformation efforts. By focusing on P-LTE for DA and workforce mobility, Ameren can now address critical elements in many utilities' transformation plans. Ameren's private wireless field trial is a valuable industry resource that will help utility companies around the world more intelligently guide their transformation while reducing risk and increasing efficiency."

Nokia and 3 Indonesia develop Zero Drive Test assessment solution to enhance network quality and user experience

Press Release

Nokia and 3 Indonesia develop Zero Drive Test assessment solution to enhance network quality and user experience

  • Zero Drive Test solution is 100 percent automated, replacing manual drive testing
  • Solution delivers more detailed insights on network performance and helps reduce CO2 emissions

19 August 2020

Jakarta, Indonesia – Nokia today announced that it is working with 3 Indonesia, to optimize and expand its LTE network coverage and capacity to meet customer demand via a new Zero Drive Test solution.

The solution will reduce CO2 emissions by replacing manual drive tests which is the typical method of assessing network coverage, capacity and quality. It is 100 percent automated, enabling 3 Indonesia to acquire detailed insights on network performance and enhance user experience. It is powered by Nokia's AVA Cognitive Services which allows mobile operators to transform their network, service and business operations through the application of AI and automation helping them to predict and resolve network issues and improve the customer experience. 3 Indonesia is the first Nokia customer in the Asia Pacific and Japan Region to adopt the Zero Drive Test solution.

Nokia's solution will help 3 Indonesia with enhanced network measurement and assessment which is superior to conventional drive tests on the road. It provides a clear view of network performance, capacity, radio signal coverage and traffic localization and collects similar drive test information with higher accuracy, speed and efficiency for network optimization and acceptance purposes. The solution also provides a much broader and more comprehensive view than conventional drive tests which only provide a snapshot of network performance along the drive test route.  For example, Nokia's solution can identify the experience for subscribers inside buildings, or contrast performance in the same location at different times of the day. This data will help 3 Indonesia to optimize radio base station LTE and improve any congested capacity or poor coverage spots.

Nokia has a long-standing commitment to sustainability. In 2019, the company delivered zero-emission products to over 150 customers worldwide. It is also committed to decreasing emissions from its operations by 41 percent by 2030. 46 percent less energy was used on average in the customer base station sites Nokia modernized in 2019 compared to those where its customers did not modernize. Last year, Nokia also joined a group of 87 companies at the United Nations climate summit in committing to recalibrate its existing science-based climate targets in line with the 1.5°C warming scenario.

Desmond Cheung, CTO of 3 Indonesia, said, "With increasing data demand and subscriber growth, together with Nokia, we continue to strengthen our network capability to effectively enhance our user experience. The implementation of the Zero Drive Test solution keeps us focused on delivering the best quality network for our customers."

Biswas Prosad, Head of Customer Team for Indonesia at Nokia, said, "This is an important development which will help 3 Indonesia to assess the performance of their network and use the data and insights to make informed decisions and changes that will enhance the experience of their customers. It will also deliver substantial savings, as well as being another example of our commitment to sustainability and zero emission products."
