20 December 2021

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has been selected by Elisa Estonia, a subsidiary of Elisa Finland, for a nationwide 5G RAN deployment as well as to replace the existing 4G infrastructure in a five-year deal. Nokia will be the sole provider, replacing the incumbent vendor. Deployment is expected to roll out next year following the completion of Estonia's spectrum auction in early 2022.

Under the deal, Nokia will provide equipment from its latest ReefShark System on Chip-powered AirScale equipment portfolio covering Elisa's nationwide radio network across the country. Nokia's AirScale RAN portfolio is designed for seamless, simple, and efficient 'plug-in' deployment and reduced power consumption. It covers all deployment scenarios including dense-urban environments and wide-area coverage.

Nokia also maintains a long-standing partnership with Elisa Corporation and was selected as a nationwide supplier of 5G RAN last year supporting their efforts to digitize Finland and make it a leading global 5G market.

Andrus Hiiepuu, CEO at Elisa Estonia, commented: "We have huge ambitions for providing state-of-the-art entertainment and communications services to our customers underpinned by a 5G network. Nokia is our trusted partner for this and will help us to deliver a sustainable 5G business. Nokia launches Gigabit Connect to simplify gigabit broadband installation in apartment blocks

Press Release

Nokia launches Gigabit Connect to simplify gigabit broadband installation in apartment blocks

  • Gigabit Connect enables plug-and-play fiber services over existing in-building cabling
  • Solution improves business case for operators expanding fiber into hard-to-connect multi-dwelling-units (MDUs or apartment blocks) to deliver gigabit broadband to more customers
  • Gigabit Connect hides complexity of G.fast, allowing management of the last leg connection as a fiber endpoint

16 December 2021

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today launched Gigabit Connect to make it easier for fiber network providers to deploy gigabit broadband services in MDUs where the final connection leg is via twisted pair or coaxial cables.

Fiber providers often encounter difficulties in bringing fiber all the way to every apartment in residential buildings. The age of the building can mean there is a lack of space or in-built ducting, or legal issues might constrain the deployment. G.fast technologies can help by enabling operators to terminate the fiber in a central location in the building and then bridging to any existing television, data or telephone cables for the last leg.

Nokia's Gigabit Connect solution builds on G.fast capabilities, hiding its complexity and enabling the last leg connection to be managed as a fiber endpoint under a single pane of glass management interface. This is especially important for operators who focus on fiber-only deployment and who do not have expertise with technologies over copper twisted pair. Gigabit Connect can be deployed with no impact on existing network management and FTTH (Fiber to the Home) services.

Gigabit Connect solution also delivers the same speed and low-latency experience for the end user as full FTTH.

Sandy Motley, President, Fixed Networks at Nokia, said: "We estimate that 20% of MDUs are challenging for new fiber installations. Using G.fast over a building's existing cables goes a long way to solving the problem, but it can be a challenge for operators to build expertise in new technologies. With Gigabit Connect, we are hiding the complexity, enabling plug-and-play fiber deployment and on-going management as with any normal fiber line. Furthermore, consumers will experience the same speed and low-latency performance as standard fiber."

Pan Dacom Networking AG is deploying Nokia's Lightspan SX G.fast distribution point units (DPUs) and Altiplano Network Management System for their fiber customer R-Kom to connect 4,000 buildings in Eastern Bavaria, Germany.

Thomas Klein, Head of Sales & Technology Competence Center from Pan Dacom Networking, said: "We are using G.fast for the last drop and use zero-touch provisioning with SDAN (Software Defined Access Networks). Nokia's solution extends what can be done with SDAN and has helped reduce deployment times by 50% with configuration from the cloud." Alfred Rauscher, Managing Director from R-KOM added: "Thanks to Nokia's scalable and future-proof solution, thousands of Bavarians living in previous fiber no-go homes can now look forward to gigabit broadband."

According to Dell'Oro, G.fast connections are set to more than double by 2025.

Nokia deploys AI-powered smart city trial to address vehicle-based noise pollution in the city of Genk, Belgium

  • Trial uses AI-powered solution to capture and measure excessive noise levels on commercial street in Genk, allowing authorities to quantify concerns of residents and visitors
  • Nokia Scene Analytics combines IoT data from connected cameras and microphones, to inform authorities of excessive vehicle noise levels
  • Shows how cities can benefit from Nokia ecosystem partner approach and ability to integrate additional capabilities with the platform to solve their complex challenges

15 Dec 2021

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today announced it has deployed its artificial intelligence (AI)-powered Scene Analytics technology for a proof of concept in the Belgian city of Genk to quantify the level of noise pollution along one of the city's high streets.

Authorities in the city want to address the health and safety concerns of residents and visitors enduring excessive noise from modified exhaust systems on cars, motorbikes and other vehicles travelling on the Stalenstraat. Nokia is working with technology partners to integrate a proof of concept solution that leverages data from microphones and installed cameras, used as IoT sensors along the road.

If an approaching vehicle exceeds the pre-determined threshold, the street deployed microphones and cameras begin recording. Nokia Scene Analytics adds intelligence to the event data transmitted from the sensors using a decibel-powered algorithm for audio analysis and automated number plate recognition (ANPR). This information is sent to authorities who receive quantified observations and orientations in order to make informed decisions on 'if' and 'how' they will address the issue.

Mayor of Genk, Wim Dries, said: "The city of Genk embraces technology that improves the lives of its residents and visitors. The data collected by Nokia's AI-powered platform will automatically analyze patterns of noise and traffic allowing us to understand with quantifiable results the concerns of residents and visitors. This will help us put plans in place to address the issues of loud vehicles in the city and make it a safer and more peaceful place for everyone within the city limits."

Suparno Banerjee, Nokia Vice President of Government and Cities, said: The Nokia Scene Analytics platform is paving the way in sustainable, cross-domain sensor data analytics. By integrating it alongside third-party solutions and additional IoT sensors, it offers smart cities and connected industries an open, flexible and scalable solution which they can use to address a variety of challenges."

Nokia has deployed mission-critical networks to over 1,500 enterprise customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, webscale and public sector segments around the globe. Leading enterprises across industries are leveraging decades of Nokia experience in building some of the biggest and most advanced IP, optical, and wireless networks on the planet.

Nokia readies O-RAN fronthaul with NTT DOCOMO for multi-vendor 5G operation

Press Release

Nokia readies O-RAN fronthaul with NTT DOCOMO for multi-vendor 5G operation

  • Nokia provided its AirScale baseband which was integrated and tested with third-party solutions
  • The trial demonstrates Nokia's continuing commitment to open networks

7 December 2021

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it is ready to supply its O-RAN fronthaul multi-vendor solution to NTT DOCOMO, INC.'s (DOCOMO) 5G network following successful testing. The move will enable the Japanese operator to further select independent combinations of hardware and software to optimize its network in the future. It follows the work of the O-RAN ALLIANCE in creating a common specification enabling interoperability between different vendors. It is the latest milestone demonstrating Nokia's commitment to O-RAN and open networks.

During the trial at DOCOMO's Lab in Yokosuka, Nokia's 5G O-RAN AirScale baseband was successfully integrated and tested with third-party O-RUs (radio units). Nokia's O-RAN capabilities are built on top of its AirScale software and provide the same high level of performance, functionality, and security as Nokia's radio products. Nokia is helping to prepare for the network architecture of the future by building open interfaces on top of its existing solutions, offering CSPs a choice to pursue O-RAN. Nokia has already made significant investments in O-RAN by leading the early deployment of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) and the open fronthaul.

The O-RAN ALLIANCE was formed in 2018 to define common interfaces between systems to reduce complexity and accelerate the deployment of multi-vendor RANs. It specified an eCPRI-based 7-2x open interface between the Radio Unit (O-RU) and Distributed Unit (O-DU). This is the only standardized fronthaul interface that enables multi-vendor interoperability while optimizing the cost of fronthaul transmission and maximizing radio-frequency performance.

Sadayuki Abeta, General Manager of Radio Access Network Development Department, NTT DOCOMO, commented: "NTT DOCOMO has been actively driving open RAN standardization and commercialization, being the world's first operator to deploy multi-vendor O-RAN solutions for the 5G network. Successful testing with Nokia is an important step in further accelerating open RAN commercialization and its global expansion."

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: "This project with NTT DOCOMO is further evidence of our commitment to leading the open mobile future by investing in Open RAN solutions. Open RAN technology will enrich the mobile ecosystem with new solutions and business models and support an expanded multi-vendor ecosystem. We have the scale and capabilities to address the increased customer demand for this technology, underpinned by the world-class network performance and security that only Nokia can deliver."
