Nokia and Djezzy implement ultra-high network capacity technology to meet growing mobile traffic demand

  • Nokia Wavence solution for carrier aggregation supports increased traffic demand ahead of 5G rollouts

30 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has successfully completed a trial with Algerian mobile operator Djezzy, using microwave carrier aggregation technology to support increased demand for capacity. The trial utilized Nokia's Wavence microwave transport solution with an ultra-high capacity of 8.5Gbps over a distance of nearly 6 kilometers. With its reduced latency and high capacity, the solution will allow Djezzy to deliver compelling experiences to its 14.2 million subscribers.

During the trial, which took place in the city of Sétif earlier this year, capacity was increased from 3.5Gbps to 8.5 Gbps and covered a distance of 5.7 kilometers, demonstrating how carrier aggregation technology can be utilized to support ever-increasing demands for data. This will become increasingly important as Djezzy prepares to cope with traffic growth and 4G densification.

The trial also marks yet another milestone for Nokia in reaching such multi-gigabit capacity on a microwave radio link. The Nokia Wavence solution, which was used in the trial, offers innovative, high-capacity ultra-broadband transceivers to support operators as they transition to 5G networks. It also supports backhaul and fronthaul evolution with multi-gigabit capacity and low-latency transport with industry-leading levels of transmitted power.

Eric Bourland, Chief Digital and Technology Officer at Djezzy Algeria, said: "This is an important trial that delivers ultra-high capacity granting Djezzy a solid solution for Mobile Backhaul. We believe this fast deployment of microwave carrier aggregation will help us achieve our goal of boosting eMBB. It also allows us to improve our network capacity in order to meet the growing mobile traffic demand in Algeria."

Giuseppe Targia, VP MN Transport Business Unit, Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: "This trial demonstrates how carrier aggregation technology can be utilized to support the ever-increasing demands for data, particularly at a time when connectivity is so crucial. We are delighted to continue our strong partnership with Djezzy on this project and will continue to work with it hand-in-hand to deliver innovative microwave solutions that support its business targets."

Nokia launches cloud-native Digital Operations Center software to drive 5G monetization

Press Release

Nokia launches cloud-native Digital Operations Center software to drive 5G monetization

  • Digital Operations Center is Nokia's first automated, cross-domain, digital service and network slice management software product
  • Digital Operations Center enables a new slice-based innovation ecosystem and new revenue opportunities by offering Network as a Service capabilities to new industries, or verticals
  • Digital Operations Center is cloud-native, and built on Nokia's Common Software Foundation to give scale, flexibility, and operational efficiencies

25 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today introduced its cloud-native Digital Operations Center software solution to give communication service providers (CSPs) new revenue-enhancing opportunities with an automated platform that manages 5G slice-based services securely and cost effectively throughout the entire lifecycle of services.

As Nokia's first network slicing management product, Digital Operations Center provides a secure and fully automated process to design, deploy and operate network slices at scale across multi-vendor, multi-domain and multi-technology environments.

Digital Operations Center is built in a modular form that includes the Nokia Orchestration Center and the Nokia Assurance Center. The new solution gives CSPs the ability to deliver and oversee network slices at scale and speed through closed-loop automation; and helps CSPs adhere to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as they expand into vertical industries

By closing the loop between traditionally separate fulfilment and assurance processes, CSPs can intelligently manage the full-service lifecycle to drive the most optimized use of infrastructure resources; to limit overprovisioning; and to automate service delivery and service optimization.

Digital Operations Center is built on Nokia's multi-vendor, multi-domain and multi-technology Common Software Foundation (CSF) that enables customers to use their choice of deployment strategies. CSF makes Nokia's software products easier to deploy, integrate, and upgrade using a variety of cloud-native principles, in order to give operators the needed flexibility to be responsive to market demands while controlling costs at a time of growing network complexity.

The advent of 5G with its sharp expansion of capacity and data throughput will let carriers customize their high-speed networks into 'slices' for enterprise subscribers based on defined needs, such as a virtual gaming company requiring a two-hour slice or a sports stadium needing one running four hours.

Nokia is helping Singtel trial its Network as a Service (NaaS) platform that aims to give the Singapore operator greater control and visibility of slicing capabilities across its network, while addressing specific 5G needs of enterprises with speed, efficiency and flexibility.

Digital Operations Center will be available at scale by the end of the year.

Anil Rao, Principal Analyst at Analysys Mason, said: "To deliver a high level of network dynamicity and control to enterprises while guaranteeing SLAs and customer experience, CSPs will need to evolve their operations to an intent driven automated operations model. Nokia's Digital Operations Center, combining network orchestration and assurance capabilities, provides the key software building blocks for intent driven operations and enables CSPs to offer on-demand enterprise network services based on 5G network slicing."

Mark Chong, Group Chief Technology Officer, Singtel, said: "We are pleased to be working with Nokia to trial our network slicing capabilities. Nokia's technology leadership, through its truly cloud-native approach to software, gives us the confidence of providing enterprises new 5G services with the scale and speed they expect from operators."

Brian McCann, Chief Product Officer, Nokia Software, said: "Nokia Digital Operations Center is an important step to making the full set of network slicing capabilities available for CSPs as we move from the consumer aspect of 5G to the enterprise and industrial side of 5G. Digital Operations Center encompasses a full menu of capabilities, all built on Nokia's Common Software Foundation, to give our customers the full flexibility and agility they need to deliver to their customers."

Nokia selected by SDN Communications to prepare for 5G services by automating its IP and optical networks

·Nokia Network Services Platform to provide comprehensive multi-layer management and control of SDN Communications' IP and optical network, enabling efficient operations, reduced costs and enhanced service performance and reliability

23 June 2020

Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Nokia today announced that its Network Services Platform (NSP) has been selected by SDN Communications, a leading business-to-business broadband service provider in the South Dakota and southern Minnesota region, to provide dynamic control and management of SDN's services throughout its IP and optical networks. Nokia's solution will help drive efficient operations and enhanced service quality, using multi-layer coordination to enable SDN to quickly respond to fast-changing customer demands like the eventual rollout of 5G services.

The Nokia NSP is the industry's most comprehensive software defined networking platform for multi-layer, cross-domain and multi-vendor management of IP routing and optical transport assets. It unifies service automation, network optimization and assurance in a single integrated software platform so that service providers like SDN Communications can deliver on-demand network services quickly, cost effectively and at great scale.

With the Nokia NSP, operating costs are reduced because it is a single, powerful management and control platform that supports common tools and practices across and between IP and optical network layers and network domains. Its flexible, modular and programmable approach also helps service providers quickly respond and adapt to changing subscriber demands. And, its open interfaces simplify integration into the existing environment to enable faster deployment and service rollouts like 5G.

The Nokia NSP ensures a high quality experience for every user and application by providing tools, operating at multiple layers, to visualize, analyze and troubleshoot the network. Root causes of issues can be established and resolved quickly. Often the network can be proactively reconfigured before a problem causes service degradation.

Mark Shlanta, CEO for SDN Communications, said: "SDN has long been a Nokia IP core and edge router customer and, most recently, we have expanded the work to include the deployment of a next-generation Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing network based on the Nokia 1830 Photonic Service Switch platform. We have a strong investment in caring for our network, and Nokia was an ideal choice to work with us to visualize, coordinate and automate our multi-layer IP and optical network through their Network Services Platform."

Sasa Nijemcevic, Head of Network Automation for Nokia's IP/Optical Networks business, said: "In modernizing SDN's IP and optical network, the most important requirements were to reduce operation expenditures, improve network resilience and enhance their customers' experience. Multi-layer coordination functions allow SDN to have a deeper understanding of areas in the network that need to be addressed, resulting in improved network robustness, reduced costs and increased customer satisfaction."

Nokia commercializes next-generation 5G Cloud RAN

Press Release

Nokia commercializes next-generation 5G Cloud RAN

  • Nokia's 5G Airscale Cloud RAN solution helps operators to generate revenue from 5G services, enable flexible end-to-end network slicing and meet IoT technology and business requirements.
  • Announcement follows a series of successful customer trials, including end-to-end 5G data calls over sub-6GHz frequency bands, with fully cloudified base station.

23 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that its next-generation 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution based on vRAN2.0 will be commercially available this year with general availability expected in 2021, following a series of successful trials. Nokia's first-generation 5G AirScale Cloud RAN based on vRAN1.0, which has a virtualized Central Unit (vCU), has been in commercial operation on a mmWave network in the U.S. since early 2019. Nokia's new vRAN2.0 solution introduces a virtualized Distributed Unit (vDU) as well as a Fronthaul Gateway. The result is a fully cloudified and disaggregated 5G base station that provides scalability, low latency, high performance and capacity, as well as several network architecture options, to meet ever-increasing market demands. The solution helps operators to generate revenue from new 5G services as well as to enable flexible end-to-end network slicing, meet IoT requirements and bring the overall benefits of cloud computing to Radio Access Networks (RAN).

The first Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution with a vCU in vRAN1.0 configuration was taken into large-scale commercial use in the U.S. in 2019. Since then, Nokia has evolved the solution to vRAN2.0 configuration with a Distributed Unit (DU) running on General Purpose Processor (x86)-based computing with hardware acceleration in Layer 1 (L1).

Nokia has now successfully completed end-to-end 5G data calls in a full end-to-end system consisting of Nokia Cloud Packet Core, Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN in vRAN2.0 configuration with full baseband in Cloud, Nokia Fronthaul Gateway, and a commercial 5G device. Both real-time and non-real-time sensitive baseband computing across vDU and vCU ran in x86-based Nokia AirFrame Open Edge Servers and Nokia AirFrame Rackmount Servers. Standard off-the-shelf Intel Vista Creek hardware acceleration was used for specific parts of the real-time sensitive L1 computing in the vDU. This helps to boost the performance even further without impacting the fully cloud-based implementation. Since 2018, Nokia Bell Labs has been working on the potential of using Graphics Processing Units for hardware acceleration, and Nokia expects these 'vRAN3.0' solutions to become mature in 2022.

Nokia's 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution is also specifically designed to reuse the existing network assets. For example, Nokia's Fronthaul Gateway solution offers an evolution path for operators to upgrade existing CPRI-based radios to eCPRI-based AirScale 5G Cloud RAN. It can run as a standalone unit or fully integrated with the vDU on an optimized Nokia AirFrame Open Edge Server, which is the first x86-based product in the world built and tailored for edge cloud and far edge cloud deployments of Cloud RAN.

The 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution supports all architecture options, offering mobile and converged operators with a choice of RAN deployments: vDU and vCU can be co-located at a central or regional edge cloud; the vDU can be decentralized to an edge or far edge cloud, or the vDU can be located even at the cell site. Such flexibility is of paramount importance due to varying topologies and transport network needs even within the same network. Nokia's 5G AirScale Cloud RAN software runs both on top of Nokia CloudBand and third party cloud infrastructure software stacks to provide maximum flexibility.

With the vDU moving closer to the edge, 5G AirScale Cloud RAN enables operators to make full use of the low-latency capabilities of 5G and enables services that benefit from such low latency and ultra-reliability, such as IoT applications. It also supports Nokia's end-to-end network slicing, from RAN across transport to Core.

With a fully cloudified vCU and vDU, Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN brings the overall benefits of cloud computing familiar from IT and Core networks to RAN: pooling, scalability, elasticity, agility, uniformity, and automation. Operators can also deploy other network functions and services at the edge, on top of the Cloud RAN deployment. For example, this can be used for Mobile or Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) implementations that benefit from the proximity of content and processing close to the point of use.

Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN has been architected for Open RAN (O-RAN), splitting the base station into Radio Unit (RU), Distributed Unit (DU), Radio Access Point (RAP, a combination of RU and DU), Centralized Unit (CU), and O-RAN compliant interfaces between these elements. It also includes the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) concept to take advantage of Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) capabilities to optimize the radio and system performance.

Ed Gubbins, Principal Analyst at GlobalData, said: "Cloud RAN has the potential to fundamentally transform mobile networks, making them more agile and dynamic and allowing operators to be more nimble in activating new services and revenue streams. Nokia has been more proactive and consistent in driving Cloud RAN technology than its peers, and the launch of its fully cloudified 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution is only the latest example of its commitment."

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: "The next-generation Nokia 5G AirScale Cloud RAN is a true innovation that will transform mobile networks and provide operators with the flexibility they need to meet the customer demands in the evolving 5G era. Its flexible architecture offers speed, coverage, capacity and low latency as well as the opportunity to generate revenues immediately."
