Press release

Nokia announces upgraded AVA Energy efficiency software to drive further reductions in network power use

  • Upgrade to further reduce electricity consumption of network assets, including data centers

27 March 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced an upgrade to its AVA Energy efficiency software, expanding the scope of the solution with enhanced algorithms and power saving measures, that will help communication service providers (CSPs) drive further reductions in electricity consumption in their networks.

Using improved Machine Learning algorithms, the enhanced Nokia AVA Energy efficiency tool now enables CSPs to lower power consumption in their data centers, in addition to network base stations, batteries, and air conditioning units in telco networks.

As a multi-vendor software tool, Nokia AVA Energy efficiency software can help realize reduced power usage of up to 30%, up about 10 percentage points relative to the original software, based on customer testing. The enhanced tool allows operators to shutdown idling and unused equipment automatically through the algorithms, with the option to completely disconnect hardware through remote power control modules.

Nokia, using its AVA Energy efficiency software, has more than 50 completed or active energy saving projects with CSPs around the world, as companies look to lower overall energy costs while addressing environmental sustainability issues in their operations.

CSPs spend between 3% and 20% of their total revenue on energy costs, according to Analysys Mason's recently published report, "Taming increased energy usage: the key role of AI-based energy efficiency solutions".

Michela Venturelli, Senior Analyst, at Analysys Mason, said: "Efficient energy consumption is an increasingly important aspect of network operations. CSPs recognize it as being a strategic imperative for their business and they want tools that will meaningfully help meeting increased network customer demands while lowering energy consumption. This latest Nokia AVA Energy efficiency solution is a solid contribution to those ends."

Hamdy Farid, Senior Vice President, Business Applications at Nokia, said: "Nokia's investment in new and better solutions never stops and this upgrade to Nokia AVA Energy efficiency demonstrates not only the superior level of our software capabilities, but also Nokia's broader commitment to cut carbon emissions across its value chain."

Nokia chosen by CANARIE as sole IP router provider of ultra-high-capacity backbone network for Canadian research, education and innovation

Press Release

Nokia chosen by CANARIE as sole IP router provider of ultra-high-capacity backbone network for Canadian research, education and innovation

  • Nokia 7750 Service Router delivers unmatched performance and reliability to support vital research in climate science, clean energy, medicine, cybersecurity and more
  • High throughput capacity and availability, transferring petabyte-sized files for researchers around the world

23 March 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that CANARIE, the high-speed backbone of Canada's National Research and Education Network (NREN), has chosen the Nokia 7750 Service Router as the IP/MPLS platform to support its more than 34,000 km network connecting 13 provincial and territorial networks to each other and to more than 100 NRENs around the world.

CANARIE and its partner networks enable breakthrough research from scientists across disciplines such as high-energy physics, biology, medicine, the environment, and astronomy, where, for example, data is gathered on millions of galaxies dating back billions of years. With a proliferation of instruments – like telescopes, sensors, and detectors – that gather more data with greater precision, sensitivity and speed, supercomputers must process petabytes of raw data. Additionally, because research collaboration happens across the globe, that data must be transferred rapidly, reliably, and securely, while containing costs.

The 7750 SR platform is designed to solve this monumental challenge with 100 Gb/s and 400 Gb/s services over an IP/MPLS network capable of supporting more than 46 Tb/s of capacity. This equates to transmitting about 30 terabytes of data in just 10 minutes, equivalent to sharing 5,000 two-hour Netflix movies in 1080p HD. This kind of massive capacity also makes network automation and DDoS security paramount, which the Nokia 7750 SR supports with advanced telemetry streams of flow-level data and insights in near-real time.

Mark Wolff, CTO at CANARIE, said: "We are pleased to work with Nokia as we continually improve the capabilities of Canada's National Research and Education Network. Nokia networking technology will allow CANARIE to better connect Canada's researchers, educators, and innovators to each other and to global data, technology, and colleagues."

Dr. Vach Kompella, Vice President, IP Networks Division at Nokia, said: "We are thrilled to work with CANARIE and equip the scientific community across Canada and globally with proven IP technology. This more than triples CANARIE's wide area network capabilities from 100G to 400G, while enhancing their resiliency, security, and flexibility."

Nokia has deployed mission-critical networks to more than 2,600 leading enterprise customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, webscale, and public sector segments around the globe. It has also extended its footprint to more than 560 private wireless customers worldwide across an array of industrial sectors and has been cited by numerous industry analysts as the leading provider of private wireless networking worldwide.

Nokia wireless connectivity supporting The Ocean Cleanup to rid the oceans of plastic

  • Nokia will be providing private wireless connectivity, network edge equipment and analytics to help The Ocean Cleanup's plastic harvesting operations in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

16 March 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today announced it will deploy private wireless connectivity, network edge equipment and analytics for The Ocean Cleanup, the international non-profit project working to develop and scale technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. The collaboration is in line with Nokia's enhanced Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, as well as a broader longstanding commitment to advancing the role of technology in combatting climate change and minimizing environmental impacts.

Nokia is focused on the role its products play in solving some of the world's most pressing challenges, using connectivity and digitalization to restore stalled productivity, provide inclusive access to opportunity and relieve pressure on the environment and natural ecosystems. According to UNESCO, plastic waste makes up 80% of all marine pollution and around 8 to 10 million metric tons of plastic end up in the ocean each year.

Nokia and MCS, Nokia's partner for Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) distribution in the Benelux, have already successfully deployed the first Nokia DAC private wireless solution for The Ocean Cleanup's operations in the North Pacific, and will deploy further systems at a later stage. Nokia DAC is a high-performance, end-to-end private wireless networking and edge computing platform. The Nokia connectivity, Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) and analytics will be used for applications such as high-end video connectivity over 4G technology, to help navigate The Ocean Cleanup's operations while harvesting plastic in the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

5G, private wireless, edge compute, sensors, AI-based analytics, drones and other advanced technologies will play an increasingly critical role in supporting the conservation and sustainability of our natural environment by providing immediate up-to-date and constant information on the status of the environment, whether on land or in the sea. Working with The Ocean Cleanup provides the opportunity to explore that role further.

Subho Mukherjee, Head of Sustainability at Nokia, said: "Through our subsea optical fiber networks, innovations such as acoustic sensing technology, remote environmental monitoring, or private wireless, Nokia can – and will - continue to play an important role in the marine environment. We are proud to support and collaborate with The Ocean Cleanup, and look forward to see how our technology can genuinely drive sustainable change and help protect critical natural resources and habitats."

Stephan Litjens, Vice President of Enterprise Campus Edge Solutions at Nokia, said: "At Nokia we believe that there is no green without digital, and that we have our greatest positive impact on people's lives and the planet through our products and solutions. This project truly exemplifies that. Our Nokia DAC private wireless network and Nokia MXIE edge computing system will ensure reliable, cost-effective voice and data communication between the two ships involved in the clean-up operation.  With secure coverage on open sea also enabling video and analytics, this solution improves worker safety and provides high visibility and scouting of target clean-up areas."

About The Ocean Cleanup

The Ocean Cleanup is an international nonprofit project that develops and scales technologies to rid the world's oceans of plastic. They aim to achieve this goal by taking a two-pronged approach: stemming the inflow via rivers and cleaning up what has already accumulated in the ocean. For the latter, The Ocean Cleanup develops large-scale systems to efficiently concentrate the plastic for periodic removal. This plastic is tracked and traced through DNV's chain of custody model to certify claims of origin when recycling it into new products. To close the tap in rivers, The Ocean Cleanup has developed a portfolio of Interceptor™ Solutions to halt and extract riverine plastic before it reaches the ocean. Founded in 2013 by Boyan Slat, The Ocean Cleanup now employs a broadly multi-disciplined team of approximately 140. The foundation is based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
