Nokia deploys 5G private wireless network for Lufthansa Technik virtual inspection trial

  • Trial to utilize hyperfast wireless connectivity to enable remote engine parts inspection
  • High definition video link takes customers directly to the overhaul shop floor
  • 5G network to save time and cost, as well as improving efficiency and operational performance

27 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Lufthansa Technik, the leading provider of technical aircraft services, have deployed a 5G industrial-grade private wireless network to accelerate a project that enables remote engine parts inspection for its civil aviation customers.

Through Lufthansa Technik's 'Virtual Table Inspection' proof of concept project at its Hamburg facility, the hyperfast 5G private wireless network will remove the need for customers to physically attend servicing by providing seamless video access to the engine overhaul shop floor.

Currently, its customers travel to Hamburg to carry out components inspections when engines are overhauled, which means that they are entirely disassembled and inspected in utmost detail. With the new system, Lufthansa Technik will trial inspections of individual engine parts collaboratively over a fast, high-definition video link.

Soeren Stark, Lufthansa Technik Executive Board Member, responsible for Technical Operations, Logistics and IT said: "Continuous innovation is part of our corporate DNA, and this is what drives us to constantly try out new approaches. The first application cases already impressively demonstrate the valuable contribution 5G technology can make to the aviation industry. It will also pave the way for numerous new innovations at Lufthansa Technik that will benefit our company, our employees and also our customers."

Kathrin Buvac, President of Nokia Enterprise said: "This application captures the essential value of fast, secure 5G private wireless networking to help improve operational efficiency, productivity and service. It highlights the potential for new ways of working that benefit not only our customers, but also the markets they serve."

In the 'Virtual Table Inspection' project, customers will be guided through the engine shop using a third-party mobile device that provides real-time, high-resolution video streaming with mechanics and engineers. This will allow virtual inspection of dismantled parts enabling joint decision making about inspected components.

Nokia is delivering 5G private wireless network connectivity by deploying the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) solution. Nokia DAC is a plug-and-play digital automation platform that can easily scale from a small local deployment to multiple sites of large systems, all managed from the same web portal.

Its flexibility will enable Lufthansa Technik to configure and adapt the network to precisely meet the project's needs. Remote, high-resolution screen inspection calls for high-bandwidth and low-latency capability to accommodate demanding upload and download speeds as well as adequate computing power to handle the processing requirements of live transmission.

Maik Voigt, Project Lead, Lufthansa Technik said: "Not only does the Nokia solution help to transform how we work with our customers, but it's also a great fit for our industry's needs."

Dr. Claudius Noack, Project Lead, Lufthansa Industry Solutions said: "In early phases, the private wireless network has shown to be technically first rate as well as being flexible to deploy and easy to tailor to our applications and work environment."

Buvac added: "Lufthansa Technik has a strong reputation for innovation. By being a 'first mover' and investing in private wireless today, it has the opportunity to gain a clear competitive advantage over those who choose to wait. Our industrial-grade wireless connectivity provides the platform to capture the benefits of digitalization and opens the door to many new innovations that are set to transform industry."

Nokia Digital Automation Cloud is an industrial-grade global digital automation service platform that provides a reliable, secure, and high-performance private wireless network, which is scalable according to needs.

Nokia has deployed over 1,300 mission-critical networks with leading customers in the transport, energy, large enterprise, manufacturing, webscale and public sector segments around the globe. Nokia introduces cloud-native Assurance and Experience software to help CSPs move toward experience-driven and automated 5G network operations

Press Release

Nokia introduces cloud-native Assurance and Experience software to help CSPs move toward experience-driven and automated 5G network operations

  • Nokia Assurance Center automates network and service operations by using machine learning to help CSPs deliver service level agreements required for new functions such as network slicing
  • Nokia Experience Center uses artificial intelligence to enable automated action prioritization based on what is experienced by customers

24 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today introduced two new cloud-native software applications that help communication service provider (CSPs) operate their networks more efficiently and effectively, and drive new revenue opportunities.

Faced with growing competition and the roll-out of complex, virtualized 5G networks that can generate up to a 100-fold increase in network actions, CSPs require automated, service-centric operations that prioritize the customer experience.

The Nokia Assurance Center effectively blends the traditionally separate fault and performance management processes to drive intelligent root cause analysis, and triggers prioritized and automated resolution.

In addition to the growth in network complexity, operators will increasingly be expected to provide commercial terms tied to Service Level Agreements (SLAs) as they expand into vertical industries. The Nokia Experience Center incorporates the subscriber dimension, quantifies the customer experience of the services being delivered, and links these values into the SLAs.

Nokia Assurance Center and Nokia Experience Center complement each other, yet operate independently in order to support the modular approach that many CSPs take to building their networks. The Nokia Assurance Center has a focus from the service layer down to the network layer, while the Nokia Experience Center has a focus from the customer and subscriber experience perspective.

The two products are built on Nokia's Common Software Foundation (CSF), which ensures that Nokia's cloud-native products allow customers to use their choice of deployment strategies. With security built-in from the beginning, CSF runs on all the leading public and private cloud platforms and servers. With such flexibility, CSF makes Nokia's products easier to deploy, integrate, operate and upgrade.

Francis Haysom, Partner and principal analyst, Appledore Research, said:

"Nokia is taking a leading position in practically combining AI with, what Appledore term, Rapid Automated Service Assurance; enabling the automation of network operations. Nokia Experience Center and Assurance Center will support the move to a network driven by customer intent (experience and SLAs) rather than a specific network technology."

Brian McCann, Chief Product Officer, Nokia Software, said: "Nokia Assurance Center and Nokia Experience Center reflect the long Nokia pedigree of being an industry leader in promoting service operations. These products bring a new level of service automation and data- and customer-centricity for operators that make many of their servicing capabilities faster, smarter, more cost effective and more relevant in order to better serve their customers."

Nokia completes 5G core standalone network trial with Japan’s KDDI

Press Release

  • Trial involved 3GPP Release 15 compliant, containerized standalone 5G core
  • 5G standalone core network takes KDDI one step closer to network slicing and ultra-reliable low latency

20 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and KDDI Corporation, a leading telecoms company in Japan, have completed a 5G core standalone (SA) network trial, moving the operator closer to being able to provide 5G-enabled services.

The standalone trial, using Nokia's 5G AirGile cloud-native core solution, was conducted entirely independently of previous generations' mobile network architecture.

With a comprehensive 5G core portfolio, Nokia is well placed to assist KDDI in analyzing the network evolution steps and early deployment of 5G core Stand Alone services, like network slicing in which service providers virtually partition network capacity to subscribers based on customized use case needs.

Nokia's  5G AirGile cloud-native core can be rolled out in a traditional network environment or a cloud environment and is fully compliant with 3GPP Release 15 5G core functions.

Evolution of the core is key to the success of 5G, and decoupling data plane and control plane functions allows for more efficient, automated management of increasingly complex networks.

In this trial NOKIA applied a service-based architecture to the 5G control plane, moving control functions completely into a cloud-based environment which provides operators with improved scalability, velocity and flexibility. The trial allows KDDI to highlight how a 5G control plane can utilize the communication model of today's web services to create multiple software instances in a cloud environment.

As KDDI plans to evolve from a non-standalone (NSA) 5G core network to a full 5G SA core, the trial ensures both parties understand the key requirements, roadmap and performance of a 5G core SA deployment. With a 5G core SA network, consumers can experience the true benefits of 5G by fully leveraging enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB), enhanced Machine Type Communication (eMTC) and Ultra Reliable Low Latency Connectivity (URLLC).

John Harrington, Head of Nokia Japan, said: "For Nokia, 5G is much more than radio. It's an end-to-end network transformation. We are pleased to have successfully completed this 5G core SA network trial together with KDDI, as it marks a crucial milestone for KDDI's 5G SA deployment as well as for Japan's 5G. Nokia will continue to contribute to  the best of 5G and the cloud to enhance business processes and bring new applications and benefits to more markets and consumers."
