The new Nokia Industrial devices are suitable for all types of enterprises and include a ruggedized handheld supporting public safety teams communicating over Band 68. The US-manufactured handheld device has a long lifecycle and is IP 68-rated for operation in remote or harsh environments. Dual-SIM, including flexibility adding eSIM, ensures the most reliable connectivity and simplified management, while an exchangeable battery allows shift workers to share devices in the field. Teams can customize keys to define a dedicated push-to-talk button, while other large buttons and optional accessories, including remote speaker microphones and earpieces enabling push-to-talk, allow workers to communicate clearly and safely without removing safety equipment like helmets and gloves.

Nokia is also expanding the portfolio of ruggedized 5G handhelds with EX-rated phones – all with the same technical platform. The company has partnered with i.safe MOBILE GmbH, world market leader for explosion-proof mobile devices and solutions. Two i.safe MOBILE 5G handhelds are now part of the Nokia end-to-end solution for private wireless infrastructures. They have been rigorously tested and certified* to meet the connectivity demands of sectors such as oil and gas, mining and chemical manufacturers. They can be safely used in hazardous areas (ATEX Zone 1) or further away (ATEX Zone 2) where flammable atmosphere is not likely but could occur for a short time. These handhelds offered by Nokia, support all necessary radio frequency bands, have all required certifications, and can thus be used by companies worldwide.*

Nokia will also offer its managed ruggedized 5G industrial devices deployed over Nokia Digital Automation Cloud (DAC) in a subscription-based 'as-a-Service' (aaS) model. Application bundles include Nokia Industrial device management, which allows administrators to apply group policies and scale management to their entire device fleet, Nokia Team Comms and Nokia Network Digital Twin. This model allows enterprises to move asset costs from capital to operating expenses and more easily connect workers and manage the fleet of industrial devices in their plants. Moving forward, Nokia will continue to add more types of devices to the managed aaS model.

The updated Nokia Team Comms (NTC) 23 application running on Nokia Mission Critical Industrial Edge (MXIE) now aligns to the 3GPP defined MCS (Mission Critical Services) standard. NTC will address the needs of mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), providing communication capabilities usually only available in more complex and expensive solutions for workers in harsh environments. NTC allows users to stream video or establish voice calls with a group of users or a single user to gain the greatest context about any situation. The new version will allow administrators to configure changes to their device fleet via a newly built web portal. Deployed on MXIE residing on-premises, Nokia Team Comms ensures data remains within the teams that use it. It works without internet connectivity and scales from small number of users to large groups.

Nokia is also extending the capabilities of Nokia Network Digital Twin (NDT) to all Android devices, allowing coverage and performance data for Wi-Fi, private and public cellular networks to be automatically collected in real time and processed on Nokia MXIE. Enterprises in dynamic environments, such as ports, factories or mines, can see how changes in their operations impact network performance and use this insight to inform future network planning and use case decisions.

Nokia launches Network as Code platform to accelerate network programmability and monetization

  • Nokia Network as Code platform and developer portal provides simplified network capabilities to developers as software code that can be easily integrated into applications
  • Network as Code platform reflects a strategic focus of Nokia to drive new business models and to unlock the potential that networks can deliver from the perspective of  innovation, sustainability, collaboration, and productivity
  • Nokia and DISH Wireless have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to partner on an ecosystem project using Nokia's Network as Code platform and the DISH 5G cloud-native network

26 September 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today introduced its Network as Code platform and developer portal that enables application developers and communication service providers (CSPs) to accelerate the work of producing software applications for new enterprise, industrial, and consumer use cases, and monetizing 5G and 4G network assets beyond basic connectivity.

5G-era networks are fundamentally software-based, a step change from how networks were designed years ago. This means they are also programmable through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and other software development tools; all of which provide access to deep functionality and data within networks and allow application developers to build new use cases and capabilities for their customers.

TAPPING INTO NETWORK CAPABILITIES

Nokia sees these capabilities falling into two primary groups: 5G capabilities and advanced capabilities. 5G capabilities include areas such as network slicing, quality on demand, and edge cloud; while advanced capabilities include areas like subscriber and device status and billing that do not require 5G networks to make them available.

To tap into those capabilities, Nokia's Network as Code platform and developer portal provides application developers with new tools such as Software Development Kits (SDK); Network API documentation, a 'sandbox' to create software code for use case simulation and testing; and code 'snippets' that can be included in applications, as well as developer analytics to track usage.

DEVELOPER AND CSP COLLABORATION

The platform, commercially available starting in December 2023, follows months of close collaboration with application developers and CSPs.

In particular, developers were provided a deep view into the platform's functionality, and the network capabilities being made available to them and how to apply them to their business. They also gave feedback for optimizing the platform, as did CSPs, which emphasized a need for ensuring secure connections with aggregator platforms that provide global reach.

DISH WIRELESS AGREEMENT

Reflecting the close collaboration, Nokia and DISH Wireless have agreed to a memorandum of understanding to partner on an ecosystem project that enables enterprises to develop applications using advanced mobile and 5G network capabilities.

The new ecosystem will utilize Nokia's Network as Code platform and the DISH 5G cloud-native network to provide enterprises with access to software development tools, like advanced network traffic controls, quality of service management, and access to user information like location and device status.

STANDARDS AND REVENUE SHARING MODEL

The Nokia Network as Code platform has been shaped using technical standards produced through industry initiatives such as the Linux Foundation CAMARA project and the GSMA Open Gateway initiative; Nokia is an active contributor to both groups.

Nokia's Network as Code platform is based on a revenue share model between developers, CSPs, and Nokia as the platform provider.

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services, at Nokia said: "The Network as Code platform and developer portal underscore Nokia's strategic commitment to leverage the broader B2B digitalization ecosystem. By making network programmability monetizable, this platform gives developers a meaningful way to create enhanced applications and experiences for their customers while providing CSPs a viable new pathway to utilize their 5G assets for enterprise and consumer value creation."

Marc Rouanne, EVP, Global Partnerships, at DISH Wireless said: "This partnership is putting the telco industry one step closer to realizing Industry 4.0. Developers and CSPs can leverage the combination of Nokia's Network as a Code platform with the DISH 5G Open RAN cloud-based network to create and monetize solutions for new use cases across both consumer and enterprise markets, opening the door for further enterprise innovation."

Jason Jackson, Vice President and Distinguished Engineer, at Kyndryl said: "In the evolving 5G ecosystem, programmable networks and advanced APIs will play a pivotal role, serving as the bridge that enables seamless collaboration, innovation, and mutual growth. Simplifying and aggregating 5G networks will be essential to make it easier for application developers and their enterprise customers around the world to harness the full potential of this technology, and integrate symbiotic technologies such as edge computing."

Camille Mendler, Chief Analyst - Enterprise Services, at Omdia said: "In the right hands, with the right tools, APIs possess enormous power to simplify digital consumption, reduce market friction and help transform ideas into revenue. Offering more choice to developer communities, enterprises and CSPs benefits everyone."
