Beirut, Lebanon - Nokia and Alfa, Lebanon's first mobile operator managed by Orascom TMT, will deploy 4.5G Pro technology using the Nokia AirScale 5G-ready radio platform following a recent successful test of the technology. With this, Alfa will be able to introduce Gigabit LTE speeds for its subscribers.

The deployment follows the MOU signed in MWC 2018 and is an important step for Alfa to prepare its network to eventually offer innovative 5G services to its subscribers. This kind of higher-speed broadband will enable them to enjoy data-hungry applications and services such as Ultra High Definition video streaming, e-health and e-education, and can support millions of smart devices connected for Internet of Things (IOT) and smart cities.

Alfa will use Nokia's 5G-ready, commercially available AirScale radio, three-carrier aggregation technique, 4x4 Multiple Input and Multiple Output (MIMO) and 256 QAM (Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) to achieve higher throughput, along with Category 16 (Cat 16) capable devices. Such capabilities are critical for operators facing relentless demand for data-driven services and preparing for the advent of 5G networks and services.

Nokia has defined a clear path to 5G through 4.5G Pro and 4.9G. The company already announced 4.5G Pro and 4.9G in September 2016 to enable operators such as Alfa to meet the ever-increasing data demands of their subscribers.

Marwan Hayek, Chairman and CEO of Alfa, said: "The road to 5G was laid long ago in Lebanon with the launch of the country's first 4.5G network by Alfa. We continue this evolutionary path toward deploying the first 5G network in the country planned in 2019 through this 4.5G Pro deployment with our long-term partner Nokia. This deployment maintains our telecom leadership position and strengthens the foundation for eventual IoT services for smart cities in the country."

Roger Ghorayeb, customer team head for growth in West MEA at Nokia, said: "We are delighted to continue supporting Alfa to quickly move toward 5G technologies and provide pioneering high-quality mobile broadband services. This deployment reiterates our commitment to modernize Alfa's network infrastructure with Nokia's latest technologies."

Solution overview of the deployment:

  • Nokia's 5G-ready, commercially available AirScale Radio Access platform that supports all technologies, allows scalability and agility from Cloud, and is energy efficient, reducing operational expenditure
  • 4X4 MIMO technology using four antennas both on the base stations and mobile devices to improve the network performance
  • Carrier aggregation software to combine an 800 MHz carrier and two 1800 MHz carriers, creating larger, virtual carrier bandwidths and boosting the network capacity
  • 256 QAM higher order modulation to improve the downlink speed
  • Nokia professional services, including Network Planning and Optimization, Project Management, and Network Implementation will be used to ensure smooth implementation of the project

Nokia allekirjoitti ensimmäisenä Suomessa YK:n suositukset liiketoiminnalle seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen oikeuksien tukemiseksi maailmanlaajuisesti

Lehdistötiedote

  • Nokia on ensimmäinen yritys Suomessa, joka allekirjoitti Yhdistyneiden kansakuntien suositukset liiketoiminnalle seksuaali- ja sukupuolivähemmistöjen ihmisoikeuksien tukemiseksi maailmanlaajuisesti

16.11.2018

Vuodesta 2017 lähtien yhteensä 204 yritystä on tähän mennessä allekirjoittanut YK:n standardit liiketoiminnalle. Lisää tietoa YK:n standardeista löytyy englanniksi täältä.

Nokia releases upgraded CloudBand Infrastructure Software to secure 5G cloud deployments, enhance service delivery and reduce costs for customers

NOKIA

Nokia releases upgraded CloudBand Infrastructure Software to secure 5G cloud deployments, enhance service delivery and reduce costs for customers

Press Release

  • New converged CloudBand Infrastructure Software delivers secure, unified virtual infrastructure management software to secure 5G cloud deployments
  • The new release includes OpenStack directly from the open source community in order to move new capabilities to customers faster and to support the smaller footprint required for edge deployments
  • Enables management of virtual machines (VM) and containers in the cloud to ease the transition to the multi-vendor, cloud-native environments of the 5G era

15 November 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced its latest CloudBand Infrastructure Software to give communication service providers (CSPs) and other customers sharper cloud management solutions that improve service delivery and significantly reduce operating costs as 5G deployments get underway.

CloudBand Infrastructure Software gives CSPs the capability to unify their Network Function Virtualization Infrastructure/Virtualized Infrastructure Manager, or NFVI/VIM, in order to support centralized and distributed edge cloud deployments and workloads.

The CloudBand Infrastructure Software upgrade streamlines operational procedures by providing a single NFVi/VIM for all cloud deployment needs, such as support and management for both VM and containerized workloads. In a 5G digital services era, there is greater dependence on containers in the cloud and Nokia CloudBand Infrastructure allows CSPs to gain experience with cloud-native architectures without introducing completely different tool chains.

Addressing a combination of IT and Telco use cases enables Nokia CloudBand customers to reduce cost and complexity compared to proprietary siloed approaches.

"Operators risk unwanted complexity and costs in their OpenStack infrastructure by creating new virtualized silos, and they stand to benefit from a unified approach," Peter Fetterolf, CTO of ACG Business Analytics. "By streamlining process definition, execution, and maintenance across multiple vendors for activities like onboarding Virtual Network Functions, deploying and updating software, and troubleshooting using disparate tool chains, operators can reduce the cost of managing and maintaining cloud infrastructure by 92% over a five-year period and total cost of ownership by 56% over the same period."

Nokia CloudBand Infrastructure Software includes OpenStack software directly from the open source community to address several challenges facing OpenStack adopters; for example, providing timely maintenance and feature updates and localized infrastructure security compliance. It also includes full Software Defined Networking domain controller pre-integration to give customers an end-to-end solution with lower integration costs and improved time-to-market.

Guy Shemesh, Head of CloudBand at Nokia, said: "Nokia's latest CloudBand Infrastructure Software improves on OpenStack's operational state and removes risk and complexity for CSPs. CloudBand Infrastructure Software supports a combination of IT and Telco network cloud deployments, including stringent radio requirements, as well as Enterprise cloud needs. It is the best-in-class solution for converged cloud management solutions. This next-level solution is being swiftly rolled out for Nokia customers."

Nokia's CloudBand management and orchestration (MANO), including CloudBand Infrastructure Software, have been key components in several multi-year customer deployment agreements in 2018. These have included StarHub to accelerate mobile data speeds to 1Gbps; BSNL to support the roll out of 4G and Voice over LTE services in India; and T-Mobile to support their nationwide, multi-band 5G network rollout across the United States.

Nokia, AT&T and Jaunt to show football fans how 5G can help enable the future of mobile content and immersive experiences

NOKIA

Nokia, AT&T and Jaunt to show football fans how 5G can help enable the future of mobile content and immersive experiences

Press Release

  • Live demonstration showcased at Atlanta Falcons vs. Dallas Cowboys pre-game tailgate event on November 18

15 November 2018

Dallas - On Sunday, November 18, Nokia, AT&T and Jaunt will show football fans the future of mobile content and immersive experiences with a 5G demonstration and tailgate before the Atlanta Falcons faceoff against the Dallas Cowboys. Using 5G connectivity and Jaunt's volumetric capture technology, fans can show their team spirit by creating an end zone dance that is memorable and shareable. The tailgate event will be happening at International Plaza outside of Gate 2 at Mercedes Benz Stadium from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ET.

This innovative fan experience will use a 5G technology system provided by Nokia and Jaunt's XR Cast, a volumetric capture and live-streaming technology. This will allow fans to capture their own 3D augmented reality (AR) holograms, view them in real-time and share on social media.

In addition to the live capture stations, the experience will include a viewing area with a miniature football field surface, along with tablets to view the end zone dances happening live in AR. While fans are in the booth dancing, other tailgaters will see their volumetric captures streamed to mobile devices stationed near the miniature football field. Once a dance is captured, the fan can share the content on social media.

Kevin Petersen, Senior Vice President of device and network experiences, AT&T Mobility and Entertainment, said: "This showcase is the fourth 5G demo we've made available to the public this year, as we lead the way in showing consumers and businesses the promise of 5G. We're excited to work with Nokia and Jaunt to demonstrate how 5G technology like volumetric video, machine learning and AR can provide enhanced experiences for fans at their favorite sporting venues."

Nokia is bringing a live 5G mmWave system powered by the Nokia AirScale baseband and radio at the 28 GHz band, connected to the Intel® 5G Mobile Trial Platform, at this tailgate event. Combined with Nokia's AirFrame data center platform, this provides an elegant 5G solution that can transmit data at gigabit speeds and that will eventually enable ultra-low latency, and includes the necessary hardware, software and services that can adapt to any cloud-based application. From immersive and innovative fan experiences at stadiums and concerts to real-time gaming; from virtual reality to volumetric video, 5G is poised to unleash a world of exciting new ways for fans to enjoy their favorite events.

Ricky Corker, Executive Vice President and President of North America, Nokia, said: "We're delighted to be a part of this latest demonstration to give fans a first hand experience of how consumer entertainment will be enhanced with super-fast download of video in seconds and new augmented reality experiences - all through 5G technology. Most recently, Nokia and AT&T collaborated on a 5G technology showcase at RTX 2018 to show how volumetric video over 5G will enable new frontiers in entertainment and gaming."

Nokia terävöittää asiakasliiketoimintaorganisaationsa fokusta 5G-aikakauden edetessä ja julkistaa muutoksia yhtiön johtokunnan kokoonpanossa

Nokia Oyj

Pörssitiedote

13.11.2018 klo 9.30

Nokia terävöittää asiakasliiketoimintaorganisaationsa fokusta 5G-aikakauden edetessä ja julkistaa muutoksia yhtiön johtokunnan kokoonpanossa

  • Ricky Corker nimitetään asiakasliiketoimintaorganisaation Amerikan-alueen johtajaksi
  • Federico Guillén nimitetään asiakasliiketoimintaorganisaation Euroopan, Lähi-idän, Afrikan ja Aasian alueiden johtajaksi
  • Ashish Chowdhary jättää yhtiön 15 vuoden menestyksekkään uran jälkeen vuoden 2018 lopussa

Espoo - Nokia julkisti tänään suunnitelmansa järjestää uudelleen asiakasliiketoimintaorganisaationsa kahdeksi alueelliseksi yksiköksi, joista toinen vastaa Pohjois- ja Etelä-Amerikasta ja toisen vastuulla on Eurooppa, Lähi-itä, Afrikka sekä Aasia. Lisäksi Nokia ilmoitti muutoksista yhtiön johtokunnan kokoonpanossa.

"Vahva asiakaslähtöisyys on välttämättömyys siirtyessämme 5G-aikakaudelle", sanoi Nokian toimitusjohtaja Rajeev Suri.

"Jokaiselle tulee urallaan eteen hetki, jolloin he haluavat kokeilla jotain uutta.

Näiden muutosten seurauksena Nokian johtokunta tulee 1.1.2019 alkaen koostumaan seuraavista jäsenistä: Rajeev Suri, Basil Alwan, Hans-Juergen Bill, Kathrin Buvac, Ricky Corker, Joerg Erlemeier, Barry French, Sanjay Goel, Bhaskar Gorti, Federico Guillén, Kristian Pullola, Sri Reddy, Marc Rouanne, Maria Varsellona ja Marcus Weldon.

  • Highlights expansion of Nokia's commitment to industrial markets with a dedicated Enterprise Business Group and tailored networking and software portfolio
  • Nokia investments in go-to-market capabilities complemented by strong ecosystem of industrial, technology and service provider and channel partners to ensure best-in-class offerings

7 November, 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today introduced its 'Future X for industries' strategy and architecture, developed by Bell Labs, to drive dramatic productivity improvements across a wide range of industry sectors. As technologies such as industrial Internet of Things (IIoT); edge cloud supporting augmented intelligence and advanced security analytics; and end-to-end 5G capable networks become a reality, they will radically speed up the digital transformation of industries such as manufacturing, logistics, transportation and energy, as well as governments and cities. Nokia's holistic approach promises to help drive a new era of productivity and human-machine interaction that will unlock trillions of dollars of economic value in the next decade.

To date, the digitalization and automation of enterprises has yielded productivity benefits, predominantly by shifting business support functions from physical to digital operations. While these gains have been notable, only about 30 percent of enterprises - largely in IT-centric industries - have been able to realize the 'digital opportunity'. Importantly, traditional asset-intensive industries - which comprise more than two-thirds of GDP in the U.S. - have yet to experience the full benefits of this digital transformation, known as Industry 4.0.

Physical industries depend on a variety of emerging business- and mission-critical  applications that, when digitized and automated, offer the potential to make power grids smarter, factories more productive, the Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) responsive and reliable, cities safer and more livable and much, much more. In short, there is the potential to transform human existence and radically enhance industries and infrastructure in what will be the 4th industrial revolution.

Future X for industries

Emerging Industry 4.0 applications will require seamlessly interconnected systems that can sense, analyze, optimize, and control key attributes and actions across a broad range of assets including machinery, tools and devices. Nokia's Future X for industries architecture provides a framework for open, connected systems for each major industry that can accelerate the digitization and automation of these physical assets, with pinpoint precision and augmented intelligence, no matter where they are located.

To accomplish this, networks must be able to connect everything simultaneously, with guaranteed quality of service, even as the number, diversity and distribution of assets grows. For companies to analyze information about the state of those assets and optimize their operations, networks must have the flexibility to connect industry applications to compute resources in a way that meets stringent latency, capacity, reliability and security requirements. They must be able to dynamically adapt to transport massively varying amounts of data between a multitude of devices, sensors, machines and platforms to garner and apply deeper insights that ultimately support precise execution, maximize productivity and improve safety.

Marcus Weldon, President, Nokia Bell Labs, said: "Industry is driven by a constant quest for leading profitability, which in a dynamic marketplace requires maximum productivity. It is now possible for those in both the digital and physical economies to accelerate their digital transformations and realize unprecedented productivity gains. The Future X for industries architecture is designed to describe the essential foundation of this Industry 4.0 revolution, much as the Future X network vision we published in 2015 is serving as a blueprint for service provider network evolution."

The Future X for industries architecture incorporates distinct technology layers designed to meet key industrial networking requirements, including:

  • The Business Applications layer, which encompasses the specific applications for each industry segment, including key areas such as predictive maintenance, workforce efficiency and safety, and asset optimization
  • The Digital Value Platforms layer that supports industrial automation, cognitive analytics and digital operations, and enabling network and device platforms
  • The Multi-cloud layer that delivers proximity and elasticity of compute to ensure that strict performance requirements of business-critical applications are met using the most appropriate cloud models (from local clouds to edge and hybrid clouds)
  • The High-performance Networking layer that offers dedicated deep, ultra-reliable connectivity (both wired and wireless) to link everything - workforce, devices, machines and tools, clouds, partners and customers flexibly and seamlessly

These layers are coupled with a 'defense in depth' cyber-security approach that encompasses both business processes and technology-based interventions to protect data and infrastructure end-to-end, with the network as a key detection and mediation layer.

When combined with richer human-machine interfaces (HMI), these capabilities will deliver intuitive, augmented and precise control of autonomous systems and manifestly more efficient digital operations.

And the demand for such networks is enormous. Some estimates indicate that LTE sites for industrial and commercial uses alone could be more than twice that of existing consumer-oriented wide-area network deployments.

Rich Karpinski Research Director, Voice of the Enterprise - IoT, 451 Research, said: "While industrial enterprises are making solid progress on leveraging technologies such as the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), cloud computing and analytics, until now the communications realm has too often been an afterthought. An overarching framework encompassing business-critical networking capabilities with deep reach and high performance not only complements, but also helps to drive IIoT, edge cloud/multi-cloud and AI, and could provide an essential next step in industry's digital transformation journey."

Nokia for industries strategy

Nokia has made significant investments to support its industrial focus, specifically in emerging technologies including software-defined networking (SDN) for both data center and SD-WAN applications, distributed cloud orchestration, advanced data streaming and analytics (including the recent acquisition of SpaceTime Insight), network automation and private LTE network technologies.

The company has also expanded its effort to address high-growth, high-margin opportunities with a set of enterprise and industry customers needing telco-grade networks. Toward this end we have established a new Enterprise Business Group that consolidates a range of existing, fast-growing activities into one focused organization reporting directly to the President and CEO, under the leadership of Kathrin Buvac, currently Nokia's Chief Strategy Officer.

These strategic moves complement Nokia's track-record supplying 1000+ networks to customers across key industries including transportation, energy, public sector, healthcare and financial services. These activities leverage Nokia's strong market position in key, foundational technologies for mission- and business-critical networks - the company is a leader in wireless and fixed broadband access, IP and optical networking.

The company has also continued to advance its partner strategy, including the formation and growth of its strategic partner ecosystem (including the establishment of new relationships with Infosys), and the expansion of its channel strategy which serves emerging market segments through channel partners, distributors and value-added resellers.

These moves build on Nokia's strong momentum with customers in key vertical markets, including recent agreements with Brazil's Elektro for the deployment of a Private LTE network to strengthen power grid reliability and efficiency, the first trial of LTE air-to-ground technology in the Middle East with STC, and an agreement with China Unicom to jointly support digital manufacturing capabilities for BMW Brilliance in China, using private LTE and Multi-access Edge Computing (MEC) capabilities.

* The Future X for industries strategy is captured in an innovative new campaign and narrative, 'Go Allwhere', that explores the impact of networks on industry productivity and how Nokia is poised to drive this transformation.
