Port of Hamburg: 5G applications pass field test

NOKIA

Port of Hamburg: 5G applications pass field test

Press Release

Espoo, Finland - Data glasses for engineers, connected traffic lights, and sensors on ships: The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Deutsche Telekom, and Nokia look back on a positive project so far.

6 November, 2018

In a world first, the Hamburg Port Authority, Deutsche Telekom, and Nokia are testing new aspects of the 5G standard using various applications in real-world industrial conditions at the Port of Hamburg in Germany. Covering around 8,000 hectares, the Port back in January became a testing ground for reviewing innovative technology and its suitability for rollout in an industrial environment. The field test is being carried out as part of the EU-funded 5G-MoNArch project in Hamburg and is set to run for two years. The goal is to establish a basis for defining further aspects of the 5G standard.

Three case studies using real-life applications demonstrate the reliability of the new standard. In the first, partners have installed sensors on ships belonging to HPA's subsidiary, Flotte Hamburg GmbH & Co. KG. These sensors transmit movement and environmental data in real time from across large swathes of the Port. In another example, a traffic light has been linked to the mobile network and can be operated remotely by the HPA control center to control traffic as it flows through the Port. Trucks, for example, are guided quickly and safely around the site. In the third example, the new standard makes high data volumes available quickly outside of existing networks, transmitting 3D data to an augmented reality application. Smart glasses use the information to show wearers building data relating to future or former structures in a real environment. In future, this technology will help engineers to monitor or optimize construction planning directly on site at the Port.

The aim of the Port of Hamburg project is to gain evidence that complex mobile applications with many different requirements can work reliably over one single network. Take particularly high data rates or a high volume of sensors, for example. In order to cope with these demands, the mobile network in the test environment is split into special virtual networks known as network slices. Each slice supports a specific requirement. The result? Separate virtual networks that can be used for managing the traffic light system or transmitting environmental data, to name just two. The new architecture is the first of its kind to allow networks to be adapted dynamically and flexibly to the demands of a broad spectrum of applications. 5G really is the intelligent network of the future.

"The test bed has given us a glimpse of the huge potential that 5G and, in particular, network slicing will offer," says Jens Meier, CEO of HPA. "I believe the new standard will form the basis for solving tricky industry challenges and is the last push we need to make a breakthrough in terms of digitalization. I'm proud that the City of Hamburg and the Port of Hamburg are among the first to benefit from this technology."

Antje Williams, Executive Program Manager 5G at Deutsche Telekom, said: "This EU project is an amazing opportunity to test out key aspects of the new 5G technology together with our customer HPA and develop it in line with the customer's needs. Not only are the findings from the project useful for the future standardization of 5G, but they also enable us to come up with new and innovative solutions for industry."

"Ports in general need to run smoothly and incredibly efficiently. At the Port of Hamburg, we have demonstrated that 5G can play a big role in this regard. The testing ground is delivering invaluable hands-on experience and data that will help us when implementing future Smart Port concepts using 5G communication networks and technologies like network slicing," adds Marc Rouanne, head of Mobile Networks at Nokia.

The technological basis for the testing ground is provided by a transmitter installed at a height of over 150 meters on Hamburg's television tower in January 2018. The stability of the mobile signal is monitored and verified by numerous measurement runs on land and the Elbe river. Industrial applications require a telecommunications network that is reliable and highly secure. Equally so, it must be able to support a large spectrum of applications. As the findings from the 5G testing ground have now demonstrated in practice, network slicing is the way forward.

5G, the next-generation communications standard, carries huge potential for use in an industrial environment. The Hamburg Port Authority (HPA), Deutsche Telekom, and Nokia are happy with developments at the 5G testing ground since it went into operation.

Background to 5G MoNArch

5G is a completely new network concept that integrates fixed-line and mobile communications. However, it's not solely about making bandwidths ever larger or speeds ever faster. 5G will be used for many diverse applications with very different requirements in terms of speed, response time, security, and capacity. It will play a key role in new applications emerging from the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0. Both the manufacturing and logistics industries in particular can benefit enormously from 5G mobile communications.

The 5G trial at the Port of Hamburg is part of a two-year research project entitled 5G MoNArch (5G Mobile Network Architecture for diverse services, use cases, and applications in 5G and beyond). 5G MoNArch aims to implement concepts for 5G mobile communications architecture in practice. Findings from the deployment of 5G network slicing in a real-world test environment are used to review and improve the underlying concepts.

While the focus in Hamburg is on integrating 5G into transportation and infrastructure management systems, a second testing ground in Turin is looking at multimedia applications. The Horizon 2020 EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation is funding the 5G MoNArch project as part of phase II of the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G PPP).

Nokia AVA helps Hutchison 3 increase network efficiency and improve the customer experience in Indonesia

NOKIA

Nokia AVA helps Hutchison 3 increase network efficiency and improve the customer experience in Indonesia

Press Release

  • Nokia AVA provides an advanced analytics solution that helped Hutchison 3 Indonesia increase spectral efficiency by 17%
  • The solution enables more efficient use of finite network resources without need for additional hardware, spectrum or cell sites

5 November 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia is helping Hutchison 3 Indonesia increase network efficiency on the operator's LTE network and boost the customer experience. Using Nokia's Spectral Performance Management solution has led to a 17% increase in Hutchison 3's spectral efficiency, meaning more mobile broadband for more subscribers, with faster data speeds and a more reliable service.

Hutchison 3 Indonesia wants to provide the best quality service, especially for younger subscribers who are using bandwidth-hungry applications such as video and mobile gaming. Due to high growth in subscribers and traffic, the operator must make the most out of its LTE radio network resources without adding hardware, spectrum or cell sites.

Nokia's spectral performance management technology has enabled Hutchison 3 Indonesia to proactively identify and resolve network performance issues and provide the best quality service for its growing subscriber base. Nokia AVA's cloud-based analytics generates automated recommendations that improve spectral efficiency and help prioritize investment in additional capacity.

Nokia AVA collects, stores and analyzes data from multiple sources, including Minimization of Drive Test (MDT) data. A 3GPP feature, MDT enables the collection of performance data from Nokia and other vendors' networks, tapping into billions of anonymized measurement reports sent by ordinary mobile phones.

Machine Learning algorithms, developed by Nokia's services experts in partnership with Nokia Bell Labs, analyze the data and identify patterns of usage and network behavior to provide highly granular, sub-cell level insights about subscriber density, application throughput and radio signal performance.

This forensic level of analysis helps network engineers understand where capacity is running out and how data throughout can be increased while predicting future demand from subscribers. These granular insights allow Hutchison 3 Indonesia to plan more accurately and increase the return on network investments including, future-proofing its evolution to 5G.

Desmond Cheung, CTO of Hutchison 3 Indonesia, said: "We provide high quality 4G data services with particular focus on the millennial across Indonesia. We are very pleased that Nokia and their Spectral Performance Management solution, using the latest innovations in AI and machine learning, help us to reduce the latency and increase capacity so that our customers can respond to their mobile games much quicker and enjoy superior video quality."

John Byrne, Service Director for Global Telecom Technology and Software at research firm GlobalData, said: "Mobile operators of all stripes face the same reality: network demand continues to increase, but available spectrum generally stays the same. As a result, they must do everything they can to squeeze more capacity and performance out of the same pipe. Analytics-informed artificial intelligence plays a vital role in ensuring strong network performance and maximizing spectral efficiency."

Dennis Lorenzin, Head of the Network Cognitive Service unit at Nokia, said: "Spectrum is a finite resource, so making the most out of it is the smart thing for any operator to do. Hutchison 3 Indonesia is addressing head-on the challenge posed by growing subscriber numbers and new bandwidth-hungry apps such as video and gaming. With the help of Nokia AVA, they can improve network efficiency and boost the experience for their subscribers."

Nokia introduces WaveSuite open applications to jump-start optical network digital transformation

  • WaveSuite is a family of open, focused, business-oriented applications dedicated to modernizing optical networking operations
  • The suite of applications gives network operators the ability to virtualize and better monetize their optical infrastructure, enabling network-as-a-service business models which can be used to support new channels to market
  • The solution implements the new MEF Optical Transport Services standards, which enable the delivery of agile and assured layer-1 services, orchestrated within an open environment

30 October 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia is introducing new open software applications for optical networks. Nokia's new WaveSuite applications allow network operators to better monetize their networks, speed-up the deployment of services and rapidly optimize the network for maximum performance and capacity.

Over the past several years, service providers have invested in agile, programmable infrastructures in preparation for software-defined networking and the many benefits it promises. SDN control software and open programming interfaces have matured, but their adoption thus far has been limited. What's needed is a new breed of intelligent software applications, driven by real-world use cases, to fulfill the promise of these investments to deliver lower costs and an enhanced customer experience.

WaveSuite software provides focused, lightweight tools driven by a business-optimized user experience. The suite of modular applications gives service providers, wholesalers, and large enterprises the ability to virtualize their optical networking infrastructure, enabling network-as-a-service business models which can be used to support new channels to market. Hierarchical service tools greatly improve the speed and ease by which network capacity is transformed into retail services, even through multiple layers of resale. Additional tools enhance operations by automating the commissioning of service endpoints at customer premises, resulting in quicker time to market and lower costs. WaveSuite also provides tools to analyze and act upon real-time network telemetry to extract more capacity from the network and improve its performance.

Nokia's WaveSuite applications are organized into three categories:

WaveSuite Service Enablement applications virtualize and monetize the network infrastructure by improving customer reach with innovative service fulfillment and assurance models. The applications create a more consumable network supporting more customers and new channels to market, without a large investment in complex back-office systems. The applications leverage novel business-aware hierarchical service models, dramatically reducing the time it takes to turn capacity into revenue-generating services.

WaveSuite Node Automation applications leverage the power and ubiquity of mobile devices to empower the service deployment workforce. By automating provisioning and record-keeping, the applications streamline equipment deployment, service activation and troubleshooting, leading to faster time to revenue and lower costs.

WaveSuite Network Insight applications enhance business, operational, and infrastructure decision-making by harnessing the power of real-time network intelligence. The applications employ trending, analysis, and prediction to quickly and intuitively guide network operators through optimization decisions which can improve performance and increase capacity.

WaveSuite complements Nokia's Network Services Platform carrier SDN solution and its FlowOne OSS by providing enhanced services orchestration and operational tools for the optical networking domain. Support for open northbound and southbound interfaces ensure its functionality in multi-vendor environments.

Mike Lott, head of innovation at Chorus, said: "We're excited by the Nokia WaveSuite open applications rollout, and are looking forward to leveraging initiatives such as the Nokia WaveSuite Service Enablement assurance applications to put more network control in the hands of our customers, while also minimizing our investment in upgrading back office systems. We also look forward to further exploring the Service Enablement virtual network hierarchical capabilities to initiate new revenue streams and further operational efficiencies."

Tim Doiron, principal analyst - Intelligent Networking at ACG Research, said: "Nokia is transforming the way transport services are consumed and monitored. Nokia's hierarchical, multi-tenant business logic and application software are right on point to radically reduce service delivery times, strengthen distribution channel partnerships and enable enterprise customers to easily consume and monitor transport services on demand."

Sam Bucci, head of optical networks for Nokia, said: "As part of Nokia's already rich portfolio of network software, WaveSuite applications provide the tools optical network operators need to accelerate their business transformation. These innovations are the result of years of working closely with our customers to address all aspects of optical networking with open applications enhancing not just operations, but opening up new services and business models.  We look forward to our continued work with our customers around the globe on their journey to becoming digital service providers."
