Doha, Qatar – Nokia and Ooredoo Qatar have successfully reached a significant milestone by establishing the Middle East and Africa (MEA)'s first private wireless network in the region for the energy sector. The first-of-its-kind project will provide dedicated voice and customer data services in the most remote and challenging locations.

 

The deployed solution covers an initial capacity of 20,000 subscribers for the offshore grid. It aims to connect offshore and onshore facilities, ensuring seamless voice and data services. By offering dedicated connectivity, this network will empower customers to digitalize and automate operations, marking a significant step towards enhanced efficiency and productivity.

 

Nokia will supply cutting-edge products tailored to deliver resilient mission-critical connectivity, along with deployment and care services, with its resident engineers providing expert support to ensure the network operates at optimal level.

 

The solution offers a native offshore system designed to deliver services, seamlessly integrating with the existing commercial core, enabling customers to improve operational efficiency and reduce interruptions from onshore connectivity. The integration equally enables the efficient handling of interoperability and interservice handovers, making communication between offshore and onshore locations smoother and more reliable than ever before, while managing latency issues through localized data services to improve process efficiency. It will also improve customer experience, by replacing older Wi-Fi and WiMAX technologies.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced its support for the Ultra Ethernet Consortium (UEC), a group that brings together companies for industry-wide cooperation to develop Ethernet specifications and software APIs that empower AI and HPC environments. Nokia will bring its technology leadership in building super scalable, low latency deterministic networks for data centers and data center interconnect to the definition of the Ultra Ethernet standard being developed by the UEC.

 

The AI revolution is not only driving the need for expanded computing resources, it's also driving changes to networks, especially those connecting computing clusters for HPC used in AI training and inference. The near-universal protocol for data networks, Ethernet is the ideal place to start for meeting the broad performance needs of AI. With Nokia's support, the UEC will develop new standards, best practices and architectures for specialized AI data center networks.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it is moving to 100% recyclable packaging for its entire Lightspan portfolio of broadband access nodes by the end of 2023. This builds on Nokia's commitment to implement more sustainable, environmentally friendly packaging. Nokia introduced eco-friendly product packaging in 2022, for its broadband customer premises equipment.

 

Nokia's new packaging eliminates non-biodegradable foam, plastic, bleaching, toxic materials and chemical treatments. It replaces protective plastic covers with a biodegradable version. The buffer material which protects the product from dropping damage, is made from fully recyclable carboard components in compliance with the Forest Stewardship Council. In addition, the packaging is designed for reuse in return shipments.

 

Nokia used this eco-friendly packaging to deliver a new generation of gigabit-speed G.fast access nodes to Deutsche Telekom, featuring a more compact and lightweight design. This will lead to a 60% decrease in packaging size and a 44% reduction in the overall weight. This will enable Nokia to ship more products per pallet and can reduce CO2 emissions from transportation by up to 60%.

 

Arash Ashouriha, SVP Group Technology Innovation at Deutsche Telekom, said: "Deutsche Telekom has set ambitious circularity goals for 2030. We focus on the entire lifecycle of our products and everything we buy from our technology suppliers. We have already taken out all single-use plastics in the packing of our own 'T'-branded devices. The collaboration with our technology suppliers like Nokia on innovative ways of sustainable packaging is therefore an essential next step."

 

Geert Heyninck, Head of Broadband Networks for Fixed at Nokia, said: "Eco-friendly product packaging is a major contributor to our climate and environmental ambitions. By using 100% recyclable materials we help to reduce waste and contribute to a circular economy. The packaging is also more compact, which allows more efficient transport and further reduces CO2 emissions by up to 60%."

 

In 2022 Nokia won 6 Red Dot Awards, including their 'Best of the Best' distinction, and 8 iF Awards for the Nokia Networks Sustainable Packaging System that uses organic, biodegradable material and reduces transport cost as well as waste disposal.

 

Nokia has committed to Science Based Targets through which the company aims to cut greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 50% by 2030. It is in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050.

New Delhi, India – Nokia today announced it has entered into an agreement with Bharti Ltd (Airtel) to deploy a next-generation optical transport network that will provide additional capacity, higher reliability and lower cost, enabling superior services for Airtel's customers. As part of the agreement, Airtel will utilize Nokia's 1830 PSS-x OTN switches in its National Long-Distance Network connecting major cities across India.

 

The launch of 5G networks and the push for broadband connectivity across India is increasing demands for Communications Service Providers (CSPs), including augmentation of backhaul transport for denser 5G mobile networks, wholesale connectivity for new segments like smart grids, datacenter interconnect (DCI) and other business services. To address this exponential growth in traffic demand, transport networks need to be upgraded to increase overall transport capacity and bandwidth efficiency using high capacity OTN switching and utilizing additional spectrum including the L-band wavelengths of the fiber. The increased capacity will mean that Bharti can potentially deliver faster and more reliable broadband services and be ready for new use cases. 

 

The Nokia OTN solution enables Bharti Airtel to seamlessly upgrade its legacy transport switching infrastructure across its pan-Indian network footprint to meet new transport network traffic demands while improving both the performance and reliability of its network. 

 

Chandan Kumar, Head of Optical Network Business Centre for Nokia India , said: "As a world leader in OTN, our technology will help Airtel to increase the capacity and features of Bharti's optical transport network to meet growing bandwidth demand driven by the enterprise and hyperscaler segments. Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Japanese mobile operator, NTT DOCOMO (DOCOMO) is deploying Nokia's Open RAN (O-RAN) compliant 5G AirScale baseband solution including Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) software in its commercial network nationwide. Nokia's high-capacity, high-performance solution enables DOCOMO to pursue a multi-supplier strategy, giving them the option to connect with Open Radio Units (RU) delivered by other suppliers. Nokia's low-power, energy-efficient AirScale portfolio will also help DOCOMO drive significant sustainability benefits as well as a lower total cost of ownership.

 

Nokia will deploy its fully O-RAN-compliant 5G AirScale baseband solution in DOCOMO's commercial network. Nokia's energy-efficient solution powered by the latest ReefShark System-on-Chip technology will also deliver sustainability benefits as well as operational cost savings to DOCOMO due to its small footprint and low power consumption. Nokia and DOCOMO are long-term supporters of open networks and have invested heavily to advance the goals of the O-RAN alliance to build open, interoperable, and responsive networks that fulfill the requirements of enterprise and consumer demand in the 5G era.

 

Nokia has a long history of partnering with DOCOMO as the RAN provider for its 3G network as well as helping the operator establish a multi-supplier 4G strategy. Both companies are taking their strategic collaboration and partnership to the next level with the deployment of the O-RAN-compliant 5G network. Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that its AVA Energy Efficiency software, to be delivered in a SaaS delivery model, has been selected by Globe Telecom to help the Philippine communication service provider drive lower network power consumption and costs. 

Nokia AVA for Energy SaaS, using artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms, will enable Globe to shut idle and unused equipment automatically during low usage periods. The solution delivers these operational and cost benefits while maintaining network quality.

Deploying this solution through a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model will allow Globe to consume the solution purely on demand through a subscription, with faster service delivery and time-to-value. This model also eliminates large up front capital expenditure and avoids the need to perform on-site software maintenance and updates. 

Globe realized an equivalent annual power savings of around 3-6 percent in a proof of concept using Nokia's AVA Energy Efficiency software together with the power saving feature of the radio access network.

Nokia has a growing list of more than 50 completed or active energy saving projects with CSPs around the world, as operators increasingly look to cut energy costs and address environmental sustainability issues in their networks.

Espoo, Finland – Swisscom and Nokia today announced the successful completion of Swisscom's nationwide Next Evolution Wavelength Transport Optical Network (NEWTON) and the official start of service migration to the modernized network. Facing high traffic growth and digital transformation, the Nokia optical networking solution equips Switzerland's largest telecom provider with a service-centric network optimized for high performance, cost efficiency and superior customer experience.

 

The surge in remote work and learning applications, video streaming, gaming, and cloud computing intensified Swisscom's goal in 2021 to bolster support for business-critical fixed and wireless traffic. The carrier selected Nokia's portfolio of optical networking hardware, software and professional services for the entire transformation which included the rollout of 22 backbone sites and 560 metro sites.

 

With the deployment completed ahead of schedule, Swisscom and Nokia will now jointly manage the migration of services to the modernized network. The new optical network will transport all of Swisscom's fixed and wireless traffic from customer-provided equipment to metro access to the backbone, supporting client services from 1G to 400G, and efficiently aggregating and managing traffic from end-to-end while maximizing fiber usage. The solution will address massive traffic growth by eliminating repetitive tasks, accelerating service delivery, and reducing overall ownership costs. Appreciably lower power consumption – a significant innovation in the Nokia optical portfolio – is also contributing to Swisscom's corporate sustainability goals by reducing its carbon footprint.

Nokia partners with Mavenir to prove Open RAN system performance 

  • Interoperability testing has been successfully completed between Nokia Baseband (DU/CU) and Mavenir Radio Unit (O-RU) using the O-RAN Alliance 7-2x fronthaul interface
  • Testing was completed at Nokia's Open RAN Innovation Center in Dallas, Texas
  • Nokia has now integrated four Radio (O-RU) suppliers highlighting the openness and industry-leading performance of Nokia's AirScale O-RAN DU/CU

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that they have successfully completed interoperability testing with a Mavenir radio using the O-RAN Alliance 7-2x interface at Nokia's Open RAN Innovation Center in Dallas, Texas.

During the trial, both companies validated the interoperability of Mavenir's CBRS Radio Unit and Nokia AirScale Baseband supporting the O-RAN compliant 7.2x interface. The testing was performed according to O-RAN Alliance specifications, demonstrating end-to-end configurations with 5G user devices. Nokia and Mavenir are able to demonstrate 5G peak performance by activating 4CC Carrier Aggregation using TDD and FDD spectrum in a 5G Standalone configuration.

Nokia's anyRAN approach is designed to give mobile operators and enterprises more flexibility in building networks that combine purpose-built, hybrid, and Cloud RAN architectures with common software. Nokia is supporting Open Fronthaul features on top of its high-performance RAN software which ensures mobile operators have performance parity with their existing RAN.

Nokia and Mavenir are long-term supporters of open networks and have invested heavily to advance the goals of the O-RAN Alliance to build open, interoperable, and intelligent networks. This industry milestone highlights both parties' ongoing commitment to open interfaces as well as their investment in R&D in the U.S. market.
