Nokia first to demonstrate live C-Band network in the U.S.

Press Release

Nokia first to demonstrate live C-Band network in the U.S.

  • Nokia completes first successful U.S. based 5G trial in C-band spectrum, reaching speeds of over 1 Gbps using commercial 5G AirScale portfolio
  • Nokia C-Band solutions are ready to deploy ahead of the expected U.S. spectrum auction in December 2020
  • Nokia already supplying 5G services to all U.S. carriers

19 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has successfully completed a series of Over-the-Air (OTA) 5G NR (new radio) trials in C-band spectrum, in Dallas, Texas. The drive tests, which achieved stable peak throughput speeds of over 1 Gbps, confirmed that Nokia's solution is ready for commercial deployment ahead of the U.S. C-band spectrum auction in December. The C-band, between 3.4 GHz and 4.2 GHz, is a crucial resource for operators to offer the best mix of 5G network capacity and coverage to subscribers across the U.S.

The demonstration was performed in Dallas' Cypress Waters neighborhood using Nokia's AirScale 5G base station equipment that is an industry-leading, commercial end-to-end 5G solution enabling operators globally to capitalize on all their 5G spectrum assets (from 600MHz to 39GHz). It offers huge capacity scaling and market-leading latency and connectivity by enabling all air-interface technologies on the same radio access equipment. The setup utilized 100 MHz of spectrum at 3.75 GHz with a 4x4 MIMO and configuration in Non-Standalone (NSA) mode combined with Nokia's Core network. During drive testing, Nokia monitored network performance and demonstrated that the 'handovers' successfully happened between C-Band base stations as expected. The connection and performance was stable throughout the entire test, highlighting the robustness of the solution and its readiness for commercial implementation.

The U.S. will hold a spectrum auction for the C-band in December with network deployments expected in the first half of 2021. C-band spectrum will be prime spectrum for providing leading-edge 5G services in the U.S., especially when combined with already deployed network infrastructure and spectrum bands via TDD/FDD Carrier Aggregation and other interworking features.

Nokia's C-band solution is based on its AirScale 5G radio frequency (RF) products. It has a full portfolio of 3.5GHz solutions, including 64TRX and 32TRX massive MIMO for extreme capacity; 8T8R radios for deployable coverage solutions; 4T4R micro RRH for street level and venue deployments; and Indoor pico RRH to provide extensive in-building coverage. Nokia is already shipping each of these solutions in high volumes to leading carriers around the world. The difference between these global solutions and the solutions needed for the U.S. C-band are the hardware changes needed to match the exact frequency range and country specific RF requirements. These adaptions are low technical risk based on Nokia's already commercial platforms, including its own ReefShark System on Chip (SoC) technologies.

This C-Band demonstration was using Nokia's AirScale 5G baseband solution. Nokia is also offering U.S. Carriers the option of deploying C-Band with its 5G AirScale Cloud RAN solution in vRAN2.0 configuration, in which the whole baseband will be in Cloud connected to the radio via an ORAN compliant eCPRI 7.2x interface.

Nokia recently announced that it has achieved 5G speeds of up to 4.7 Gbps in OTA tests performed on AirScale base station equipment being deployed in major U.S. carriers' commercial networks. This most recent achievement in C-Band is another example of the strong progress Nokia has made in 5G over the past 18 months.

Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, commented: "The mobile industry is dependent on the allocation of new spectrum to increase capacity and deliver enhanced mobile broadband services. This test, in the C-band, is significant because it proves that we have a solution ready-to-go following the completion of the spectrum auctions in the U.S. later this year. We are already working with all major U.S. carriers and look forward to strengthening our relationship with them further by deploying C-band and delivering incredible 5G experiences to business and subscribers across the country."

  • AT&T and Nokia are co-creating the Radio Access Network (RAN) Intelligent Controller (RIC) based on O-RAN architecture and publishing in open source
  • The limited live trial was performed over AT&T's commercial 5G mmWave network in New York City
  • In the trial, the RIC ran at the network edge on an Akraino-based Open Cloud Platform

18 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and AT&T today announced a successful limited live trial of the RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC) over AT&T's commercial 5G mmWave network in New York City. Once fully implemented into the network, the RIC platform will enable increased network optimization capabilities through policy-guided, closed loop automation.

Last year, AT&T and Nokia announced their collaboration to co-develop the RIC software platform, in alignment with the O-RAN Alliance target architecture, to accelerate the creation of open source software for the 5G RAN. The intent is to create open interfaces and an open ecosystem of interoperable components that will enable rapid, flexible service deployments and programmability within the RAN. The RIC software is available at the O-RAN Software Community.

For the recent trial, AT&T and Nokia ran a series of external applications, called "xApps," at the edge of AT&T's live 5G mmWave network on an Akraino-based Open Cloud Platform. The xApps used in the trial were designed to improve spectrum efficiency, as well as offer geographical and use case-based customization and rapid feature onboarding.

Ultimately, the trial achieved its test goals. Both companies tested the RAN E2 interface and xApp management and control, collected live network data using the Measurement Campaign xApp, the neighbor relation management using Automated Neighbor Relation (ANR) xApp, and tested RAN control via the Admission Control xApp – all with zero interruption to the live commercial network.

Mazin Gilbert, VP of Technology and Innovation at AT&T, said: "This successful trial is a testament to what we can achieve through openness and collaboration. Together with the O-RAN Alliance, AT&T and Nokia will continue to develop and contribute to the E2 interface and the RIC platform to help enable an intelligent and flexible 5G network."

Nokia reinforces open software standards leadership with support for TM Forum initiative to help drive new CSP business models

Press Release

Nokia reinforces open software standards leadership with support for TM Forum initiative to help drive new CSP business models

18 June 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia Software today reinforced its leadership track record of advancing open software standards that are customer and experience centric, announcing its support for the designing, building and operating of digital services that use Open Digital Architecture and Open Application Program Interfaces.

Nokia Software announced its support – aimed at helping communication service providers (CSPs) develop new business models and better address new and existing customer needs, irrespective of the generation of mobile technology – in conjunction with TM Forum, the industry group. TM Forum, of which Nokia is a member, has over 850 member companies, including CSPs, software vendors, system integrators and consultants.

For years, open software design standards have been core to Nokia's cloud-native software strategy and its Common Software Foundation (CSF), built several years ago. As a multi-vendor, multi-domain and multi-technology platform, CSF provides customers their choice of product deployment strategies.

CSF makes Nokia's software products easier to deploy, integrate, and upgrade with a variety of cloud-native principles, giving operators the needed flexibility to be responsive to market demands while controlling costs at a time of growing network complexity.

With backing the TM Forum initiative, Nokia Software endorses the Open Digital Architecture (ODA) and Open Application Program Interfaces (APIs), reinforcing its existing open software architecture, as well as its commitment to zero-touch interoperability and partnering with CSPs and enterprises.

ODA and Open APIs are part of a broader Open Digital Framework, led by TM Forum, aimed at removing the need for large-scale software customization and integration, which is costly and inhibits product and R&D capabilities.

ODA is about creating a repository of tools, architecture, code, knowledge and standards to enable an open software model and a marketplace to support it. Open APIs are a type of programming code that enables data transmission between different types of software.

Nik Willets, CEO of TM Forum, said: "With the new major service providers and suppliers signing the manifesto for change announced today, TM Forum members, like Nokia, are transforming IT and operations to be fit for the 2020s. Today we're taking the next step in the journey to ensure our industry can survive and thrive, building on the success and impact of our Open APIs. The momentum building to collaboratively deliver Open Digital Architecture will be the foundation for the software market our industry deserves, instead of sinking resources into maintenance and integration of customized legacy solutions that are blocking agility and innovation."

Bhaskar Gorti, President of Nokia Software and Nokia Chief Digital Officer, said: "Nokia is pleased to give its added support to our TM Forum partners. Telecom networks and the supporting business, operations and experience systems are rapidly changing to one that is software-based, automated, intelligent, and customer- and experience-centric. In short, a network architecture that gives CSPs many new opportunities and use cases, like network slicing, that allow them to better serve their customers. And those endpoints are what we are driving towards with the announcement today."

Koko Nokia on hänelle hyvin kiitollinen, kuten olen minäkin."
