Nokia and Japanese rail operator, Odakyu Electric Railway, collaborate on AI-based railroad crossing safety trials

Press Release

Nokia and Japanese rail operator, Odakyu Electric Railway, collaborate on AI-based railroad crossing safety trials

  • Nokia scene analytics provides machine learning technology for real-time railroad  crossing monitoring
  • Analytics capability improves safety; reduces downtime and operational costs
  • Video-based analytics offers functionality and performance that exceeds current radar systems

19 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Odakyu Electric Railway Co., Ltd. announced that it is carrying out trials of Nokia's SpaceTime scene analytics in order to identify ways of enhancing rail crossing safety.

With testing underway at Tamagawa Gakuenmae No.8 railroad crossing in Machida City, Tokyo, Nokia's scene analytics can detect abnormal events by applying machine-learning based artificial intelligence to available camera images. Trials will be conducted from February 14 into March.

Analyzing available image feeds generated by conventional railroad crossing cameras, scene analytics identifies potential issues in real-time. Running on edge computing resources, it can also greatly reduce required bandwidth at remote sites, which may have limited connectivity.

The Odakyu Electric Railway is committed to advancing innovative technology in order to make the Odakyu Line the safest rail company in Japan, enabling its customers to travel with complete peace of mind.

One of the leading private railway operators in Japan, Odakyu Electric Railway currently has 229 crossing points across 120.5 kilometers of rail track, with 137 radar systems for object detection.

John Harrington, Head of Nokia Japan, said: "Odakyu Electric Railway is renowned for being an early adopter of new technology and this trial illustrates the role that AI can play in delivering enhanced levels of vigilance. This is a critical milestone for Nokia to help contribute not only to railway safety improvement but also to decrease operational costs and enhance performance."

Nokia SpaceTime scene analytics, which was developed by Nokia Bell Labs, is also capable of providing real-time alerts for unauthorized entry into remote facilities. It can detect and alert supervisors when personnel or equipment access unsafe locations in industrial settings or when heavy machinery is out of position creating a potential hazard.

Harrington added: "Network connected cameras are one of the most prolific sources of IoT data that can provide valuable insights to help promote high safety standards. By running machine learning analytics on camera feeds, and sending solely relevant scenes and events to operators, the full benefits of video surveillance can be realized in a wide variety of settings – with rail crossings a particularly relevant use case."

Nokia announces first-of-its-kind 5G certification program to train and certify industry professionals

Press Release

Nokia announces first-of-its-kind 5G certification program to train and certify industry professionals

17 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it is launching a certification program to help industry professionals realize the full business potential of end-to-end 5G networks. The Nokia Bell Labs End-to-End 5G Certification Program is a first-of-its-kind program that will offer professionals across the information and communications technology (ICT) industry two levels of certification – Associate and Professional – that deliver essential knowledge covering everything from the basics of 5G networks to professional level planning and design.

The vendor-agnostic certification program is designed for business and technology professionals at communications service providers and enterprises. By having their employees gain a greater understanding and proficiency in the application of end-to-end 5G technologies, companies will benefit from faster realization of 5G strategies and the competitive advantage of providing high-value 5G services.

Marcus Weldon, Nokia CTO and President of Nokia Bell Labs, said: "5G is dramatically changing the communications landscape, providing the need for a broad, technical program that provides professionals not only with a firm understanding of end-to-end 5G technologies but also the skills to apply them effectively when creating network solutions in support of emerging business opportunities. As 5G investments are still in relatively early stages, we feel the timing of this end-to end 5G certification program is ideal, ensuring the coming years of intense 5G activity have profound, positive impacts for consumers and industries alike."

Sergio Fasce, Vice President of NokiaEDU, the learning and development branch of Nokia, said: "NokiaEDU is excited to partner with Nokia Bell Labs to deliver this innovative end-to-end 5G certification program. The companies and individuals who are best informed and equipped to recognize the opportunities of 5G stand to benefit most from this revolutionary technology."

The Nokia Bell Labs 5G Certification Program will officially launch at the end of February with the introduction of its Associate Level Certification and End-to-End 5G Foundation course. Professional level certifications and courses will follow later in 2020.

Nokia is the only vendor with an end-to-end product and services portfolio that covers all 5G network elements, including radio, core, cloud and transport as well as management, automation and security. This offers operators and enterprise customers wth a simple and efficient step-wise upgrade to existing radio access, core and transport domains, helping customers identify a faster path to 5G. Approximately 60% of Nokia's 5G customers have selected more than just New Radio from its end-to-end portfolio.

Nokia's momentum in 5G is underpinned by the company's continued leadership in cellular technology R&D and standardization. In October 2019, Nokia announced it had declared more than 2,000 5G patent families as essential for 5G, a year after making its first declarations for the standard. Driven by world-class innovations from across the organization, including the renowned Nokia Bell Labs, it has played a leading role in contributing technologies to 5G, working with 3GPP to establish 5G standards and enabling the rollout of 5G networks. Nokia is now contributing towards the next set of standards, Release 16.

Nokia cancels participation at MWC 2020 in Barcelona

Nokia cancels participation at MWC 2020 in Barcelona

Press release

  • Nokia has taken the decision to withdraw from MWC 2020 after a full assessment of the risks related to a fast-moving situation.
  • Primary focus has been to safeguard the health and well-being of employees and others while also recognizing responsibility to the industry and customers.
  • Nokia wants to thank the GSMA as well as the governments of China and Spain and Catalonia's Generalitat.

12 February 2020

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has been carefully monitoring the situation following the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, with the goal of making a fact-based decision related to our attendance at Mobile World Congress in 2020.

While the health and safety of our employees is our absolute priority, we also recognize that we have a responsibility to the industry and our customers. In view of this, we have taken the necessary time to evaluate a fast-moving situation, engage with the GSMA and other stakeholders, regularly consult external experts and authorities, and plan to manage risks based on a wide range of scenarios.

The conclusion of that process is that we believe the prudent decision is to cancel our participation at Mobile World Congress. We want to express our thanks to the GSMA, the governments of China and Spain as well as Catalonia's Generalitat, and many others who have worked tirelessly to address the challenges resulting from the novel coronavirus, and they have our full support as they move forward.

Rather than meeting customers and stakeholders in Barcelona, Nokia plans to go directly to customers with a series of "Nokia Live" events aimed at showcasing the industry-leading demos and launches scheduled for MWC.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia provides end-to-end 5G portfolio to SoftBank Corp. to become first in the world to have successfully completed tests demonstrating that non-standalone 5G technology can be used to commercially operate connected cars.

Using state-of the-art equipment from Nokia's end-to-end 5G portfolio, Japanese operator SoftBank Corp. installed non-standalone 5G networks suited to connected vehicle testing at a Honda Research and Development site in Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido, Japan.

The test has succeeded in conducting a breakthrough, world-first trial that is the first step in deploying Nokia's 3GPP Release 15 compliant using commercial-level 256QAM high-order modulation and 4x4 MIMO radio equipment network equipment.

As part of the trials, SoftBank Corp. tested four use cases, including the transmission of location information of surrounding vehicles at intersections with poor visibility, the identification and notification processes for falling objects on the road as well as and the transmission and secondary use of high-quality 4K video and images taken from the in-vehicle cameras.

Nokia believes 5G will be capable of delivering the speed and capacity required to ensure vehicles can communicate and interact safely and efficiently on road networks. Deploying high-bandwidth and low-latency 5G networks is essential for delivering the benefits of the next generation of road vehicles, whether they are connected or fully autonomous.

Nokia's ambition is to ensure that 5G technology can be fully utilised in the future connected car market, which is projected to reach over $225bn in value by 2025.

John Harrington, Head of Nokia Japan, said: "These trials demonstrate that 5G technology can be successfully, safely and efficiently utilized in the connected car market. We look forward to further develop research in this exciting space and bring 5G-connected mobility solutions to the roads."
