Espoo, Finland – Nokia has been selected by New Zealand operator Spark for its roster of 5G suppliers. The deal, announced yesterday, will see Nokia's 5G technology deployed across New Zealand as part of Spark's 5G network, delivering faster speeds, enhanced response times and more bandwidth to Spark's customers.

 

As one of the radio access network (RAN) equipment suppliers for Spark's 5G upgrade, Nokia will deploy its AirScale RAN solution at more than 200 sites, allowing Spark to target both consumers and enterprises with new services and offers. Nokia will also deploy other products and services from across its end-to-end portfolio including digital design and deployment services.

 

Spark New Zealand and Nokia have a long-standing relationship, which crosses multiple domains, including IP, optical and wireless. This new commercial 5G partnership marks the next chapter of the relationship between Spark and Nokia, providing New Zealanders with the technology that enables them to benefit from the fast-evolving digital world economy and applications.

 

The agreement follows the launch earlier this year of New Zealand's first 5G trial customer service. The trial, which took place in Alexandra, South Island, used the latest Nokia radio equipment to offer select business and consumer customers the opportunity to experience high-speed wireless broadband delivered by 5G. Nokia is currently working with Spark to deploy 5G capability to an additional 5 sites before the Christmas period. 

 

This Spark agreement demonstrates Nokia's solid 5G momentum, which now reaches 50 commercial 5G contracts globally, including most early adopters. Nokia is currently powering 16 live networks globally.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia, working in partnership with DOCOMO PACIFIC, is powering connectivity in Guam with the first commercial 5G service in the Marianas. This marks Nokia's 49th 5G commercial contract.

 

Nokia is enabling end-user (BtoB) commercial 5G services for enterprise customers on the islands of the Marianas. Nokia has already played a key role in the establishment of DOCOMO 5G Open LabTM, which allows local and global partners to test and collaborate on creating practical solutions that are powered by 5G.

 

Guam already has some of the most advanced telecommunications infrastructure in the South Pacific region, and 5G is set to transform the island's economy, as well as the enterprises that work there. Using Nokia's comprehensive end-to-end portfolio, DOCOMO PACIFIC,INC will be able to deliver high performance, reliable 5G networks to provide next-generation connectivity and drive enterprise in one of the remotest regions on earth.

 

The deal with DOCOMO PACIFIC is Nokia's 49th commercial contract, demonstrating that Nokia continues to see solid 5G momentum. Nokia is currently powering 16 live 5G networks globally.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that its Common Software Foundation platform now supports Amazon Web Services (AWS). The result offers communication service providers (CSPs) additional deployment choice and faster time to service when rolling out new 5G or digital services.

The announcement, which builds on an existing relationship with AWS, marks the next step in Nokia's move to deliver cloud-native network functions and applications, enabled by the company's Common Software Foundation (CSF), which makes Nokia's software products easier to deploy, integrate, use and service. 

With many Nokia-powered 5G networks now live in lead markets like the US, Japan and South Korea, CSPs are planning public cloud options to enhance their service offering and delivery. AWS provides a strong ability of extending its cloud programming model to CSPs' premises, thus offering elasticity, scalability, service richness and security across the telecom network.

"Whether for OPEX optimization, on-demand capacity to optimize CAPEX, quick time to market, or support of 5G and other edge compute applications, public cloud deployments of advanced network software are a critical new option for CSPs," said Analysys Mason Research Director, Dana Cooperson. "Companies such as Nokia and AWS working together is a positive step in making this option a reality."

Since the start of the relationship in October 2017, AWS has played a key role in Nokia Software's modernization efforts, spanning the development, delivery, and hosting services for its software infrastructure. This process required multiple steps, starting with containerizing network functions and applications in a unified fashion using CSF, and then enabling CSF and Nokia containerized software deployment on AWS. 

Early benefits of this collaboration include a CSF-based, cloud-native system for automating applications integration and customization procedures rolled out on AWS in June 2019. The system supports 1000+ Nokia applications delivery engineers across the globe.

"Interest in AWS from the CSP market segment beyond IT workloads is growing rapidly," said Matt Garman, Vice President of AWS Compute Services, Amazon Web Services, Inc. "We are delighted to be working with Nokia and helping them leverage the power of AWS for their network infrastructure solutions and business and operational support applications."

Nokia already offers several applications on AWS, including customer experience, service fulfillment, and orchestration solutions. Through this engineering collaboration, Nokia will prioritize 5G solutions including mobile core, network & service orchestration, and device management & operational support systems suites. Additionally, all new Nokia Software cloud-native network functions and applications moving forward will be available on AWS upon release.

"Our Common Software Foundation continues to drive commercial value forward for our customers including choice of deployment options. CSF now enables all our cloud-native network functions and applications on AWS," said Bhaskar Gorti, President of Nokia Software. Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it is collaborating with Hitachi Kokusai Electric on local 5G and private wireless LTE solutions for industrial and government customers. Spectrum for local 5G will be released in Japan at the end of 2019 for enterprise use.

 

As part of the collaboration, the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud platform with its secure, reliable and low-latency connectivity will be used for applications including video analytics, AI, machine learning and IoT, as well as drones, group communication, and AR/VR. It will also enable autonomous transport vehicles, such as trucks, trains, forklifts and straddle carriers, to increase productivity at factories, utilities, airports and ports.

The Japanese government is releasing 5G spectrum designated for individual companies and local governments (known in Japan as local 5G) at the end of 2019. This will enable enterprises, regional authorities and other organizations in Japan to deploy the next-generation of industrial-strength wireless connectivity based on LTE and 5G technologies to create local private, reliable networks.

 

Nokia and Hitachi Kokusai Electric will collaborate to provide an eco-system of solutions to support the deployment of new digital automation services. Hitachi Kokusai Electric will share its expertise as a leader in driving the adoption of private LTE networks for industry use and disaster prevention in Japan. Nokia will lend its private LTE/4.9G and 5G wireless connectivity solutions, which have established a global marketplace footprint across energy, transportation, public sector, manufacturing and logistics.

Nokia and VMware expand partnership to ease large-scale, multi-cloud operations

Espoo, Finland and Palo Alto, Calif. – Nokia and VMware today announced an expanded partnership that includes the development of integrated solutions to support communications service providers' (CSPs) drive for operational improvements and cost efficiency through large-scale, multi-cloud operations.

 

After years of working with virtual or cloud-based network functions in limited production deployments, CSPs need to build out these functions at scale to handle the increasing use of new data-intensive applications for tomorrow's 5G and edge computing use cases. Success of this strategy is dependent on seamless interoperability and efficient operations of cloud-based network functions.

 

VMware and Nokia have a broad mutual customer base globally, across both companies' portfolios. Through the expanded partnership announced today, the two companies will advance the interoperability between Nokia software applications and VMware's Telco Cloud, including VMware vCloud NFV. Nokia and VMware will also increase their investments in a deeper partnership with technology collaboration and advanced research & development to develop integrated solutions. As a result, CSPs will be able to more easily meet their business and use case objectives, using VMware cloud infrastructure that is engineered to work together with Nokia virtualized and containerized network functions.

 

Nokia and VMware have been working together to create seamless cloud redundancy by running Nokia's applications, such as Nokia Service Management Platform, on VMware's Telco Cloud platform and VMware HCX, an application mobility platform designed for simplifying application migration, workload rebalancing, and optimized disaster recovery across data centers and clouds. This will enable customers to embrace a multi-cloud strategy to unify network and IT environments and connect them to private enterprise clouds, edge clouds, and public clouds.

 

Nokia will continue to focus on the technical certification of Nokia VNFs and software applications on VMware vCloud NFV platform through a dedicated, on-site VMware Ready for NFV Certification Lab. The new lab includes performance characterization to enable CSPs to properly configure their technology environments for the best results. With the Certification Lab, Nokia and VMware will serve customers in an accelerated fashion, keeping pace with new features and releases and enabling better roadmap alignment between the two companies' portfolios.

 

Several Nokia software applications, such as Nokia CloudBand Application Manager and Nokia Smart Plan Suite, along with virtual IMS, virtual packet core and session border controller are already certified for operations in VMware cloud environments. These and others can be found on VMware Solution Exchange.

Sacramento, California – Nokia has been selected by Cal OES Public Safety Communications office to upgrade CAPSNET, which is operated by Cal OES Public Safety Communications and supports the communications needs of many key state and local government public safety agencies. The network upgrade is part of a solution to transform the current time division multiplexing (TDM) technology system to support more advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks. This will enable Cal OES to continue providing highly reliable and secure connectivity for first responders, while enhancing the network to provide higher capacity and improved availability wherever needed, both now and into the future.

 

The upgrade is based on Nokia's Wavence and 7705 SAR portfolios and incorporates features specifically designed to address Cal OES' unique needs. For the project, Nokia is replacing legacy hybrid microwave equipment with new packet-based technology while retaining full TDM interoperability. This approach will enable Cal OES to expand its bandwidth to support new IP-based applications while also increasing reliability and availability of the network, without impacting existing applications.

The Nokia Wavence is a packet-based platform that supports legacy TDM traffic and new Layer 2 and Layer 3 services. Nokia's solution to the state also includes its latest addition to the Wavence product family, the new Microwave Packet Transceiver Plus (MPT-HLC Plus). This provides increased capacity utilizing industry leading 4096 QAM and up to 7.5 dB more in system gain. Higher system gain can reduce the size of antennas required, lessen tower loading and extend the path distance, eliminating expensive repeater sites or just improving the availability of existing paths. The Cal OES network also includes Nokia's Network Services Platform (NSP) enabling automation to assist in delivering transport services faster and dynamic assurance for operating the network with maximum performance and reliability.

Abuja, Nigeria – Nokia today announced that Spectranet, Nigeria's largest Internet Service Provider, will bring high-speed access to customers in Lagos and Abuja by deploying its GPON solution as part of an extensive Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) rollout. The solution will enable Spectranet to provide new ultra-broadband services such as 4K HD video streaming and online gaming to residential and enterprise subscribers in the region.

 

One of the first Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to launch 4G LTE services in Nigeria, Spectranet has been providing wireless broadband services in Nigeria since 2013. With Nokia's FTTH technology, Spectranet will be able to address the evolving demands of its subscribers by providing high speed and stable internet connectivity at affordable tariffs. The deployment supports the Nigerian Government's Vision 20: 2020 to use technology for the economic growth of the country.

Nokia joins Sendai City in world's first test of private wireless connected drones for tsunami evacuation alerts

Sendai City and Nokia successfully conducted a test flight of a Nokia drone on a private LTE network provided by Nokia Digital Automation Cloud. They tested the potential use of drones during a tsunami or other disasters to help in prevention and mitigation efforts. The test verified that using a private LTE network to control and communicate with the drones is an effective means for enhancing situational awareness and communicating with the affected population during a disaster. This is the first time in the world this type of trial has been conducted.


Sendai City is the center of Tohoku Region, Japan, and lies northeast of Tokyo on Honshu Island, with a population of over 1 million. The coastal areas were devastated by the tsunami caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, and have come to be recognized internationally through the United Nations as a symbol of disaster risk reduction and reconstruction. In the verification test, it was assumed that a major tsunami warning would be issued in the coastal area near the Minami-Gamo Water Treatment Ceter in Miyagino Ward, Sendai City.

 

Nokia deployed a private LTE network near the Minami-Gamo Water Treatment Center using its plug-and-play digital automation cloud technology. Using speakers, HD cameras and thermal cameras mounted on Nokia drones, the testers delivered recorded and real-time voice messages and conducted aerial monitoring using HD and thermal camera video streaming from the drones.

 

During the simulated disaster, the testers were able to issue a major tsunami warning to evacuees in coastal areas through the drone speaker, and monitor the tsunami arrival zone and coastal areas through drone camera images. They also guided people to evacuation sites using the drone to convey directions, and monitored the movements of evacuees using the drone camera. The test also highlighted how first responders can facilitate disaster prevention and mitigation without risk to the personnel managing the evacuation activities.

 

Nokia Drone Networks is a turnkey solution consisting of one or several drones equipped with gimbals with HD and thermal cameras, a private LTE wireless network, a drone flight command and control center, and video analysis applications. Private LTE/4G provides seamless and secure connectivity, making it more suitable for mission-critical use cases than the mostly Wi-Fi-based technology used in public mobile networks. The high-performance, low-latency connection provides optimized coverage for the drones, ensuring sufficient capacity for video streaming across wide areas and enabling secure information processing. Drones can also be flown over populated areas with limited risk and with better control in difficult weather conditions.

 

In 2017, Nokia and Sendai City concluded a strategic partnership agreement for improving the safety and security of citizens and supporting local industries through the use of Nokia ICT technology. A drone demonstration will be held November 9–12 in conjunction with the 'World Disaster Prevention Forum/Davos Meeting @ Sendai 2019' to be held in Sendai City. Going forward, the partnership will continue to promote the use of Nokia technologies to help improve the safety and security of citizens, revitalize local industries, and promote the technological development of local companies.

 

Sendai Mayor Kazuko Kohri, said: "The use of these drones seems to be very effective in ensuring the safety and security of Sendai and its surrounding areas. The demonstration by Nokia showed that we should be able to respond faster and provide better information to the people in the most affected areas during a potential disaster. We are very hopeful that Nokia Drone Networks will help us to reduce risk for our citizens."
