Dallas, TX and Pineville, LA - Nokia has been selected by Cleco to modernize its microwave communications network to support approximately 290,000 customers Cleco serves through its retail business and those it supplies wholesale power to in Louisiana and Mississippi. The new network is based on Nokia's microwave packet radio technology and its new Microwave Packet Transceiver Plus (MPT-HLC Plus), designed to deliver the reliability and performance needed to support Cleco's expanding capacity needs, while providing the scalability and flexibility to enable it to introduce new services in the future.

 

Nokia was selected to provide the backhaul of Cleco's digital mobile radio system that is critical to the safety of its customers and more than 1,300 employees. By moving to an all packet-based architecture, Cleco is also able to increase its operational efficiency.

 

For the project, Nokia is replacing Cleco's legacy hybrid radio equipment with its Wavence(TM) microwave packet radio portfolio, the latest in microwave packet radio technology and the leading 'pure packet' product portfolio on the market. Nokia Wavence was developed with mission-critical stringent requirements for security, reliability, latency and resiliency in mind. The portfolio incorporates features specifically designed to address the unique needs of Cleco, smoothing its transition from older time division multiplexing (TDM) technology to more advanced Internet Protocol (IP)-based networks.

 

The high system gain provided by Nokia Wavence will enable Cleco to expand its capacity in support of new IP-based applications without requiring a new antenna infrastructure and without forcing a disruption of existing communications, thus reducing costs and facilitating a seamless, incremental migration from TDM to IP.

 

Nokia's Microwave Packet Transceiver Plus (MPT-HLC Plus) provides increased capacity utilizing industry leading 4096 QAM and up to 7.5 dB more in system gain. Higher system gain can reduce the size of antennas required, lessen tower loading and extend the path distance, eliminating expensive repeater sites or just improving the availability of existing paths.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced inter-connect carrier Gulf Bridge International (GBI) will use the Nuage Networks SD-WAN 2.0 solution to offer their enterprise customers optimized connectivity between branches and private and public clouds. Customers within GBI's 26+ country presence can reduce their operational overhead with the new service. This deal marks the first extension of a software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) to the public cloud in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region.

 

GBI provides managed IP services to hundreds of enterprise customers in Europe, Middle East and Africa (MEA) and Asia. With this new solution, GBI's customers can set up automated services with specific policies related to availability, reliability or security, via one, unified interface. Algiers, Algeria - Nokia is helping Ooredoo Algeria take the first step towards next generation networks and reinforce its technology leadership in the region with the successful deployment of North Africa's first virtualized Mobile Gateway. This is a crucial step for the migration of core network elements to the cloud and paves the way for the transformation of the core network to support next generation mobile network technology. The deployment allows Ooredoo Algeria to meet growing data demand in the region, and provide new and innovative services like Internet of Things (IoT), in addition to enhanced broadband to its subscribers. Once deployed, Ooredoo Algeria's subscribers will be able to enjoy high bandwidth-consuming services, delivering the best possible performance and reliability.

 

Nokia's Cloud Mobile Gateway has been installed and placed into commercial service. Nokia will be deploying more gateways in the near future.

 

Next Generation Core (NGC) is a service-based architecture that calls for the evolution of the core network. Deployment of the Cloud Mobile Gateway is one of the most important steps in this transformation. It will help Ooredoo Algeria deliver a seamless network experience across fixed and wireless access technologies. Nairobi, Kenya - Nokia and the Finnish National Committee for the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and UNICEF Kenya have launched a shared-value partnership during this year's Nairobi Innovation Week, to increase equitable access to digital literacy for some of the most disadvantaged children in Kenya. This includes girls and children with disabilities in urban informal settlements and some of the most remote areas of Kenya.

The partnership builds on the Government of Kenya's investment in the Digital Literacy Project which provided one million tablets to primary schools with a focus on improving the availability and use of quality digital content.

The partnership between Nokia and UNICEF Kenya brings together stakeholders from the Government of Kenya's Ministries of Education and ICT, as well as the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), children, teachers, content providers and mobile network operators in Kenya, to address challenges and unlock opportunities for digital learning and literacy.

As an initial step, the Accessible Digital Textbook with special features for children, with hearing, visual and intellectual disabilities, has successfully been piloted in schools during the first quarter of 2019 and will be launched by the Government of Kenya later this month. The textbook, which is the first of its kind, was produced by KICD with the active involvement of disability stakeholders who infused different media-overlays with audio for children with visual impairment, simplified text for children with intellectual disabilities, and Kenya Sign Language video inserts for children with hearing impairment.

 

Dr. Julius Jwan, CEO of KICD, said: "With technical and financial support provided by UNICEF and active participation of children with disabilities, KICD has successfully produced the first accessible digital textbook for children in Grade 1, contributing to equitable access to digital literacy. This textbook provides quality digital content for children with disabilities on the Digital Literacy Project devices. This accessible digital course material is for Grade 1 in Environmental Activities and within the same platform caters for children with visually impairment, hearing impairment and intellectual disabilities. It also allows learners without disabilities to access features like Kenya Sign Language videos, thereby contributing to inclusive education. This project is scalable to cover the other learning areas."   

 

Going forward, the partnership will provide support to the Government of Kenya to avail more digital learning materials to schools in urban informal settlements of Nairobi and the frontier counties of Garissa and Turkana. This will be achieved by connecting them to the internet using the latest Nokia connectivity technology.

 

Scaling-up of internet connectivity in schools is planned to allow students to access quality digital learning materials that are aligned to the new competency-based curriculum and approved by the Government of Kenya.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announces a significant extension of its long-held commitment to the highest standards in network security, unveiling an enhanced security program and establishing an advanced security testing and verification laboratory: both designed to address the critical security needs of 5G end-to-end (E2E) networks.

 

Nokia has a long-standing commitment to creating secure products via its comprehensive, industry-leading Design For Security (DFSEC) process. DFSEC ensures that security is designed into every product from the start, undergoing rigorous security testing prior to commercial release. Launched today, a new program - DFSEC 2.0 - will build on this leadership in security development by focusing on additional verification work in the areas of E2E identity management, network slicing and SDN security, virtualization, and OAM, including patch management.

 

To support collaborative research and development across the DFSEC 2.0 program, Nokia is opening the "Future X Security" (FXSec) Lab. Built as an extension of Nokia's Future X network lab in Nokia Bell Labs in Murray Hill, this lab will be open to communications service providers and industries to facilitate joint testing and verification of industrial automation solutions in private local area networks (LANs) and across public wide area networks (WANs).

Defining 5G security standards for the future

 

The E2E 5G networks that will define this new era are a significant advance from the closed systems and technologies in previous generations. Software Defined Networking (SDN) with distributed cloud infrastructure and augmented intelligent control systems will allow networks to scale in the 5G era, powering the next billion connected things, systems, machines and people.

 

However, open interfaces and commonly available technology also introduce new networking infrastructure security challenges, as does the addition of billons of unverified devices that will be used to sense and control the physical world.  Therefore, a new approach is warranted that goes beyond today's security for 'best effort' networks, to enable security for E2E mission-critical networks.

 

Nokia's 7 key research areas for secure design

 

In building the new security approach for LAN and WAN, Nokia will be incorporating advanced research from Nokia Bell Labs to create Network Slicing Security Solutions that will ensure security and trustworthiness of the end-to-end network slices - the critical connectivity and service fabric for industrial applications in the 5G era. These security solutions are based on 7 key research areas:

 

  1. "Accountable Security" that provides failproof identification of industrial IoT devices in mobile and dynamic environments
  2. "Physical and Virtual Device Integrity Protection" that provides scalable device attestation (hardware, firmware and software) across the supply chain
  3. Artificial Intelligence enabled "Threat Detection and Mitigation for Network Slices"
  4. "Fine-grained Security Policy Management" which dynamically tailors network slice elements to meet specified security requirements
  5. "Dynamic data protection" which addresses the issue of data isolation across mobile devices, applications and slices
  6. "Microservice Behavioral Fingerprinting" that is a unique machine learning based anomalous behavior detection of third party and open-source 5G services
  7. Paradigm shift in design for security that provides run-time mitigation of potential security concerns with rapid feedback into development cycle using DevSecOps models

 

The next generation "Future X Security" for end-to-end mission critical networks will leverage Nokia Bell Labs long-standing leadership in researching and standardizing security solutions. Nokia Bell Labs has the leading patent filings in key areas of security of 5G and E2E networks - including aspects of multi-tenancy, slicing, and industrial IoT - and for trust and patch management, remote attestation, security management and orchestration. Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that Altibox, one of the largest regional telecommunication operators in Norway and Denmark, will deploy its Gainspeed Unified Cable Access solution, based on a fully virtualized Distributed Access Architecture (vDAA).  The solution provides the network foundation needed for Altibox and its partner Eidsiva Bredbånd to deliver enhanced all-IP-based ultra-broadband services to residential and business customers. The deployment will enable Altibox and Eidsiva to significantly increase network capacity and establish a fully distributed and virtualized access architecture that can support new, competitive Gigabit and multicast IPTV services over longer distances. 

To effectively implement the changes required by the DOCSIS standard, Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC)-based access providers will need to support IP-based services in an efficient way. With 20-30 percent annual IP data growth globally,1  cable operators are turning to software-driven, all-IP Distributed Access Architectures (DAA) to increase the capacity of existing HFC networks and improve signal quality. Distributed access architectures can also help reduce OPEX and the number of hub offices required by effectively virtualizing the headend and network functions.       

Nokia's Unified Cable Access solution is based on vDAA which delivers greater space and power savings, as well as superior architectural flexibility, compared to traditional DAAs. By moving the cable access layer functions in its headend and hub sites to the access nodes that sit closer to customers, Altibox and its partners can eliminate some of its legacy cable-specific hardware,  dramatically reducing the amount of power, space and equipment required in the headend. Nokia's vDAA solution will also enable Altibox and Eidsiva Bredbånd  to significantly reduce the number of hub offices, realizing significant real estate cost savings while simplifying network operations.  By virtualizing the headend and network functions, Altibox effectively pushes the digital portion out to the node, ensuring a better signal quality and experience for subscribers.

Altibox and its partner Eidsiva Bredbånd  will begin deploying Nokia's vDAA solution, including the Gainspeed Access Controller and compact form factor Gainspeed SC-1D Access Nodes, into its network in 3Q 2019. Nokia's vDAA solution can flexibly accommodate backhaul through Altibox's existing IP/MPLS network, which will facilitate and expediate deployment.

Beirut, Lebanon - Nokia announces that Ogero, Lebanon's fixed network services provider and engine for the Ministry of Telecommunication, is among the first operators globally to commercially trial its Fixed Access Network Slicing (FANS).  The solution helps to solve the long-lasting challenge of fixed infrastructure sharing and enables Ogero to create several discrete network slices over its existing Fiber-to-the-home network in a fully programmable way.   Once deployed, Ogero will be able to provide customers with a virtual slice that looks, feels and operates just like a physical network.  The solution leverages Nokia's market leading software-defined access portfolio with its cloud-native software platform Altiplano and SDN programmable Lightspan FX OLTs. 

Ogero provides all the telecom network infrastructure in Lebanon covering more than 12,000 KM of laid fiber optics cables reaching over one million subscribers.   The trial demonstrates how Ogero can use slicing to maximize the usage of its fiber access infrastructure and provide a virtual portion to Mobile Operators, Data Service Providers (DSPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) challenged with building their own networks.  The solution ensures fair competition and facilitates equal opportunities in the market.  With Nokia's FANS solution, Ogero can give a slice of its fixed access network to a virtual network operator (VNO) along with full control and autonomy of the portion allocated to them. The VNOs will also be able to establish individual performance metrics for the network and services they deliver to customers

Network slicing will change the competitive landscape in Lebanon by unleashing new FTTH business opportunities for the private sector and enabling service providers to compete for subscriber value.  No longer locked into a single provider, end users will be able to choose the broadband provider that can deliver the best ultra-broadband service to meet their needs.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today confirms its position with 42 commercial 5G deals (more than any other vendor has announced) in place with operators around the world, 22 with named customers such as T-Mobile, Telia Company and Softbank. Including these agreements, Nokia's 5G deals, trials and demos total over 100 5G customer engagements to date.

 

Since the announcement of the 30th commercial 5G contract at the end of March the company has seen an average of one major contract win each week - with a steady pipeline in place for further agreements.

 

Nokia's ability to deliver on crucial network transformation goals has been rewarded by the confidence shown in the company from our existing customers. To date, every 4G customer that has come to us to investigate how we may work with them for 5G has selected Nokia as a vendor and cumulatively we believe we have a higher share with these customers in 5G than we had in 4G.

 

With an end-to-end portfolio that is unique in the industry, Nokia can work in partnership with operators to deliver "real 5G". Nokia's in house 5G mmWave Small Cells and AirScale BTS provide in-building and outdoor coverage, while our Microwave Anyhaul, Cloud native RAN, antennas, and 5G cloud-native core are part of approximately half of our agreements to date. Beyond our mobile networks portfolio, Nokia has excellent FP4 network processor-based IP routers and PSE- 3 chipset powered optical networking - our customers can use the Nokia Network Services Platform to make this into full-5G-strength software defined connectivity 'smart network fabric' secured by Nokia Security Orchestration, Analytics and Response (Nokia SOAR) to ensure resilient 5G.

 

Early rollouts of 5G have been well publicized in North America, Korea and Europe and Nokia is looking forward to announcing its work with operators in emerging nations and regions such as India and Latin America over the coming months.

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced Telefónica Spain will use the Deepfield Cloud Intelligence analytics solution to improve user experience and troubleshoot content delivery in real time. Nokia Deepfield will equip Telefónica Spain with previously unattainable visibility into application and service traffic on its network. This provides vital, data-driven insight and analytics into the capacity being used and enables automated actions to significantly improve service assurance and performance.

Online video consumption continues to surge worldwide, with customers expecting the highest quality of experience for gaming and video streaming services. In Spain, specifically, regulator CNMC reported three out of ten households consume online content as of 2018, with approximately 5.9 million online video subscribers in the country. In addition, although cloud applications and services make up more than 60% of global network traffic today, according to Deepfield's analytics, providers have had very limited insight into application traffic running on their networks or the impact network performance has on end-user applications and subscriber experience to-date.

Telefónica is responding to these challenges with an ambitious automation strategy, relying on Nokia Deepfield software for its automated cloud and network analytics for real-time, actionable insights on network performance and quality of experience.
