Nokia announces 2018 Bell Labs Prize winners; Samory Kpotufe wins top prize for fundamental breakthrough in machine learning

Press Release

  • Kpotufe wins First Prize, $100,000 and opportunity to collaborate with Bell Labs developing a quantitative theoretical basis for transfer machine learning
  • UCLA's Aydin Babakhani wins 2nd Prize for pioneering devices that will revolutionize sensing with terahertz waves
  • Team from Israel takes 3rd Prize for ground-breaking theoretical work on optimal wireless transmission for massive scale IoT

6 December 2018

Murray Hill, N.J. - Nokia today announced the top three winners of its fifth annual Bell Labs Prize, an international competition for innovators with ideas that will significantly 'change the game' in the field of information and communications technologies by a factor of 10. The winners collectively earned $175,000 in cash prizes and are given the unique opportunity to collaborate with Nokia Bell Labs researchers to help realize their vision.

This year's Bell Labs Prize winners are:

First Place: Samory Kpotufe, currently an Assistant Professor at Princeton, and joining Columbia University next month, won the First Prize and $100,000 for his pioneering work on the critically important field of 'transfer learning' in machine learning that answers the question of how and when can learning from one machine learning tool, be applied to another; this is a question that lies at the heart of all machine learning - is each model a 'one off' or can the learnings be applied to other scenarios, and if so when? Samory has answered this question with a breakthrough theory that provides a quantitative answer.

Second Place: Aydin Babakhani of UCLA won Second Prize and $50,000 for his work on novel terahertz devices that can produce and receive a broad spectrum of Terahertz radiation at low cost and tiny form factor, opening the door to the imaging of our world in profoundly new ways.

Third Place: A team comprised of Benjamin Zaidel of Bar-llan University and Shlomo Shamai of Technion Institute of Technology, won Third Prize and $25,000, for their pioneering work on a practically implementable optimal air interface solution for connecting millions of IoT devices over radio network resources that is extremely close to the theoretical performance limit and cost-optimized.

Marcus Weldon, President of Nokia Bell Labs and CTO of Nokia, said, "The Bell Labs prize is a unique opportunity for innovators to collaborate with Bell Labs researchers to invent the future and solve the critical problems confronting humanity. This year's collection of proposals elevated the competition to new levels, reflecting the ever-increasing role that technology has in improving nearly every facet of our lives. The top three projects were extremely close in the final judging, but Samory is a well-deserved winner of the 2018 Bell Labs Prize as his research in transfer learning takes the much-vaunted field of machine learning and puts it on a much firmer foundation for the future. The team here at Bell Labs looks forward to collaborating with all top three winners to help realize the full potential of their research ideas, in the coming years."

This year's Bell Labs prize competition attracted more than 250 proposals from around the world. Proposals were reviewed by Nokia Bell Labs researchers and evaluated based on three criteria, including whether the idea has a "10X innovation potential" to change the world; the proposal's technical merit; and the overall feasibility of the proposed idea.

The proposals were narrowed down to a select group of outstanding candidates who were given the opportunity to partner with Bell Labs experts to help expand the impact of their proposals. Five finalists were then invited to the final judging event held this week at the iconic headquarters of Nokia Bell Labs in Murray Hill, N.J, with the judging panel comprised on Nobel Laureates, and former Bell Labs Prize winners, as well as Bell Labs alumni.

China Mobile and Nokia launch industry-first commercially ready 5G hybrid indoor radio solution

NOKIA

China Mobile and Nokia launch industry-first commercially ready 5G hybrid indoor radio solution

Press Release

  • Companies jointly develop industry-first, low-cost hybrid 5G radio distributed indoor system with location services
  • Will enable China Mobile to evaluate the solution in future field trials and deployments

  • Further proves the 5G commercial readiness of Nokia AirScale Indoor Radio portfolio

6 December 2018

Guangzhou, China - Nokia and China Mobile Research Institute today launched the industry's first hybrid indoor radio solution with location services to meet 5G connectivity demands inside busy large buildings such as business campuses and shopping malls. The jointly developed 5G hybrid distributed indoor system is aimed at lowering operators' deployment costs.

Research conducted by China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) shows that consumption of 70% of 5G business applications will take place indoors, with high-value customers likely to spend 80% of their working hours in an indoor environment. As a result, indoor coverage has become a key area for operators to develop new 5G services. China Mobile has long utilized distributed access systems (DAS) for 4G indoor coverage and wanted a solution that would meet the demands of 5G while reducing costs as it introduces innovative new services.

Nokia and China Mobile jointly developed the industry-first 5G low-cost hybrid distributed indoor system to meet these challenges. This active smart indoor coverage system leverages the Nokia 5G Pico RRH system together with passive DAS antennas and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology. With fewer active elements to deploy compared to Pico systems, the solution reduces deployment costs to the levels associated with traditional passive-only DAS systems, while delivering greater capacity than DAS.

The ability to leverage both active and passive indoor distribution technologies enables the delivery of intelligent operations and maintenance services, making it easier to monitor, locate and correct any disconnected elements. The new services enabled include weak coverage analysis, indoor positioning, traffic flow analysis, easy expansion and elastic scalability. In a shopping mall, the location services can enable functions such as remote security monitoring and the ability to send shoppers information about busy locations to avoid congestion. Additionally, the integration of third-party services such as geofencing and hot-spot identification will enable retailers to send coupons and store information to customers in a mall who have opted in to the service.

Nokia and China Mobile Research Institute are showcasing the innovative system at the 6th China Mobile Global Partners Conference from December 6 to 8. During 2019, the companies plan to conduct an interactive live demo which will showcase how the monitoring capabilities of the solution can be used to deliver operational efficiencies.

Zhang Xinwang, Senior Researcher at China Mobile Research Institute, said: "China Mobile is committed to delivering the best user experience for mobile applications empowered by innovative technologies. Our collaborations with Nokia Shanghai Bell, along with the innovations jointly achieved, will help us maintain the leading position in 5G coverage and capacity while effectively lowering implementation costs."

Chang Jiang, Chief Technology Officer of Customer Operations at Nokia Shanghai Bell, said: "Nokia is committed to working closely with China Mobile as a long-term technology partner, and the launch of the innovative hybrid system is a strong testament to our work. As a leader in 5G, Nokia will continue to build on its technology momentum to help China Mobile evolve its network to meet its business and consumer customers' increasing demands in the 5G world."

  • Will enable Oi to offer its customers fiber-to-the-home using Nokia fixed access technology to enhance residential broadband performance

5 December 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia and Oi have signed a long-term technology partnership to enable Oi to meet increasing demand for fiber connectivity in the home and expand mobile broadband coverage and capacity, while preparing for the future introduction of 5G. Nokia will leverage its radio access, IP and optical transport and fixed broadband solutions and services, working with Oi on the service provider's operational restructuring process, as part of its recovery plan.

Reductions in broadband subscription prices and a growing adoption of smartphones have led to an increase in demand for data services in the home and on the move in Brazil. The introduction of fiber-to-the-home has led to renewed demands for residential broadband services in regions previously covered only by copper networks. Oi and Nokia have signed a series of agreements under which they expect will drive new speeds, capacity and performance in Oi's network to meet these growing demands and connect up to 10 million houses by 2021.

Nokia will continue Oi's widespread optical transport and IP access network expansion, delivering up to 10 Terabits per second capacity throughput using dense-wave-division-multiplexing optical transport and IP routing technology. The optical transport network will serve as the backbone for high-speed fiber-to-the-home services, in addition to the Nokia AirScale radio access network to support growing mobile broadband demand as Oi transitions toward 5G.

The deployment of the Nokia AirScale single radio access network across the country will support 2G, 3G and 4G services and can be software upgraded to support 5G. This will allow Oi to expand its 4G offering as it gradually reduces 2G and 3G services, while preparing for the delivery of 5G.

Network and service operations will be enhanced through increasing use of automation and analytics, including the Nokia AVA cognitive services platform. An improved customer experience will be enabled through machine learning and prescriptive analytics that can predict and prevent service degradations up to 7 days in advance.

Nokia and Oi will also explore residential broadband service quality, adopting new models to improve the 'Oi Fibra' and 'Oi TV' services as well as the customer experience. The companies have signed a reseller agreement that will enable Oi to offer Nokia WiFi beacons in its retail outlets in the country. This  solution, once installed, quickly establishes a whole-home meshed WiFi network that significantly enhances ultra-broadband coverage and performance.

Eurico Teles, CEO of Oi, said: "We expect that this long-term technology partnership agreement will allow us to consolidate our suppliers and benefit from greater operational efficiencies as we continue our restructuring process."

Osvaldo Di Campli, head of Nokia Latin America, said: "With an end-to-end technology and services portfolio we are able to work with service providers such as Oi to deliver new capabilities in fixed and mobile services as they transition toward 5G."

Nokia's Threat Intelligence Report 2019 warns on the fast-growing and evolving threat of malicious software targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices

NOKIA

Nokia's Threat Intelligence Report 2019 warns on the fast-growing and evolving threat of malicious software targeting Internet of Things (IoT) devices

  • IoT botnet activity represented 78% of malware detection events in communication service provider networks in 2018, more than double the rate seen in 2016, when IoT bot activity was first seen in meaningful numbers
  • IoT bots now make up 16% of infected devices in CSP networks, up significantly from 3.5% a year ago
  • Malware threats against IoT devices could get worse as consumer adoption of such devices accelerate in the years ahead as 5G capabilities - including extreme broadband, ultra-low latency connectivity, and massive networking - advance

4 December 2018

Espoo, Finland - The use of malicious software to attack IoT devices like smart home security monitoring systems is rising substantially and growing more sophisticated as cyber criminals take advantage of lax security, Nokia's Threat Intelligence Report 2019 warned on Tuesday.

Driven by financial and other nefarious purposes, IoT botnet activity accounted for 78% of malware detection events in communication service provider (CSP) networks in 2018, according to the report, which is based on data aggregated from monitoring network traffic this year on more than 150 million devices globally where Nokia's NetGuard Endpoint Security product is deployed.

That is up sharply from 33% in 2016, when IoT botnets were first seen in meaningful numbers. A botnet is a system of computers that can be infected with malicious software and controlled by a single computer for doing things like stealing bank account information and shuttering web sites.

"Cyber criminals are switching gears from the traditional computer and smartphone ecosystems and now targeting the growing number of vulnerable IoT devices that are being deployed. You have thousands of IoT device manufacturers wanting to move product fast to market and, unfortunately, security is often an afterthought," said Kevin McNamee, director of Nokia's Threat Intelligence Lab and lead author of the report. In 2018, IoT bots made up 16% of infected devices in CSP networks, up significantly from the 3.5% observed in 2017.

As an indicator of the rising threat, the report found that malware-infected crypto-coin mining is expanding from high-end servers with specialized processors to IoT devices as well as smartphones and web browsers. Crypto-coin mining is generally the process by which crypto currency transactions are verified and added to blockchain technology systems.

Industry analysts widely expect IoT device adoption to accelerate with 5G. The high bandwidth, large-scale and ultra-low latency capabilities of 5G greatly facilitate connecting billions of things to the internet, including smart home security monitoring systems, vehicles, drones and medical devices.

But, as the Threat Intelligence report's findings underscore, lagging security protection of many current IoT devices and increasing technical sophistication are giving cyber criminals broader scope for successfully launching IoT device attacks.

"Cyber criminals have increasingly smart tools to scan for and to quickly exploit vulnerable devices, and they have new tools for spreading their malware and bypassing firewalls. If a vulnerable device is deployed on the internet, it will be exploited in a matter of minutes," McNamee said.

Also explaining some of the rise in IoT device malware infection rates is the fact that attacks on mobile and fixed networks in 2018 decreased from previous years. This is a result not only of cyber criminals looking further afield for softer targets, like IoT devices, but of better-protected networks, platforms and mobile devices that are designed and built with security in mind.

The Nokia NetGuard security suite provides protection against a wide variety of bots and malware. The suite aggregates, analyses and correlates security data from a variety of sources, including endpoint detection software, to help security teams control risks and costs and to improve decision making.

The NetGuard Endpoint Security software includes an IoT behavioral anomaly detection component that is capable of constantly tracking devices against security threats. The individual traffic profiles of any device, including an IoT device, are machine-learned automatically by the Endpoint system; any anomalies detected triggers immediate trouble-shooting against threats.

NIB and Nokia agree EUR 250 million financing for 5G research and development

Press release

  • NIB loan will be used on 5G technology research and development in Europe

3 December 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today signed a EUR 250 million loan transaction with the Nordic Investment Bank (NIB) to finance research and development activities related to 5G technology.

The loan, which has an average maturity of approximately 5 years after disbursement, will finance Nokia's extensive research and development program focused on 5G activities in Europe in 2018-2020. The investment will especially concentrate on developing new 5G-related end-to-end product offerings for different business areas.

5G is the next generation of wireless systems beyond the current 4G standards, providing a substantial increase in network capacity, reducing latency delays and enabling network slicing. Network slicing gives network operators greater ability to differentiate their services to match clients' needs.

Nokia's 5G research and development program also focuses on the implementation of the "Internet of Things", machine-type communication between the things humans have invented. In practice, this means a network of different devices, such as home appliances, vehicles and other electronics, being able to exchange data wirelessly.

"The business opportunities of 5G are numerous, as it will be the first mobile generation designed from the beginning for machine-type communication. Nokia's research and development is likely to benefit not just the telecom sector, but also several high-technology operators in our member countries," says Henrik Normann, NIB President & CEO.

"We are pleased to receive this financing commitment from the NIB, which shares our view of the revolutionary nature of 5G. This financing will further support 5G research and development in Europe and it bolsters the momentum we have already seen this year as the era of 5G begins," says Kristian Pullola, CFO, Nokia.

About NIB
NIB is an international financial institution owned by eight member countries: Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The Bank finances private and public projects in and outside the member countries. NIB has the highest possible credit rating, AAA/Aaa, with the leading rating agencies Standard & Poor's and Moody's.

AIS Fibre teams up with Nokia to launch first in-home meshed Wi-Fi service to customers in Thailand

AIS Fibre teams up with Nokia to launch first in-home meshed Wi-Fi service to customers in Thailand

  • AIS becomes first service provider globally to commercially launch Nokia's WiFi solution
  • Nokia solution provides AIS Fibre customers with meshed Wi-Fi network that delivers ultra-broadband access and Wi-Fi coverage to every corner of the home
  • AIS fiber customers eligible to receive duo-pack of Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 for a special price as part of residential premium high-speed broadband service package
  • Nokia solution delivers industry's first whole home Wi-Fi network that can detect and resolve Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi interferences in real time

November 28, 2018

Bangkok, Thailand - AIS Fibre, a leading fixed broadband operator, is teaming up with Nokia to provide residential customers with a new premium service that ensures a seamless Wi-Fi broadband experience reaching every corner of the home.  AIS Fibre customers in Thailand will be eligible to receive the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 duo-pack for a special price which, once installed, quickly establishes a whole-home meshed Wi-Fi network that significantly enhances ultra-broadband coverage and performance.

Many homes suffer from poor Wi-Fi performance.  Speeds and reliability can be impacted by the number of connected devices and by interference from appliances like microwave ovens or Wi-Fi networks from neighbors. In addition, coverage is often inadequate due to dead zones from indoor walls.  Solving these issues can be difficult, often requiring several access points to be installed.

The Nokia Wi-Fi solution eliminates these common home networking challenges and provides AIS Fibre customers with a true meshed Wi-Fi experience that is easy to install and delivers the whole-home coverage and performance needed to support ultra-broadband services. Designed to detect 100% of both Wi-Fi and non-Wi-Fi interference sources, the Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 automatically connects devices to the strongest channel to ensure a flawless experience. Additionally, embedded software and analytic functions in the beacons automatically self-heal and optimize the Wi-Fi experience, eliminating the need for customers to manually manage the network to achieve optimal performance.

Once the Nokia beacons are delivered, AIS Fibre customers can get their network up and running in few minutes by simply downloading a mobile app and following the guided setup process. Once the network is up, customers can use the mobile app to see a visual representation including a heat map to easily locate and manage dead zones and identify the right place to add new access points to fill coverage gaps. Customers can also quickly access device lists and management capabilities to create guest networks and specific security settings.

Benoit Felten, chief research officer at Diffraction Analysis, said: "In speaking with service providers from all over the world it's clear that Wi-Fi is a major challenge because, most don't provide or manage the Wi-Fi network in the home that customers rely on for broadband access.  To deliver a great end-to-end service, operators need to ensure a consistent broadband experience can be achieved in the home and Nokia is helping make that happen.  Nokia's WiFi solution creates a meshed network that eliminates dead spots and optimizes performance to ensure customers receive a seamless ultra-broadband experience throughout every corner of the house, regardless of the device being used."

Saran Phaloprakarn, Head of Fixed Broadband, AIS said: "AIS Fibre is an innovative leader and we are constantly investing in new technologies that help us deliver an unmatched ultra-high-speed broadband experience to the Thai market.  For example, we were proud to be the first in Thailand to offer fiber access services and dual-band Wi-Fi. We are now excited to become the first operator in the world to commercially launch Nokia's innovative mesh Wi-Fi solution.  By teaming up with Nokia, we are creating a new standard in home Wi-Fi networks that is unmatched in the industry.  With exclusive access to Nokia's industry leading WiFi Beacon 3 solution, AIS customers will now be able to quickly and easily set up a home network that ensures Wi-Fi performance is delivered to every corner of the home."

Federico Guillén, president of Nokia's Fixed Networks Business Group, said: "The Nokia Wi-Fi solution uniquely addresses the customer need for a better Wi-Fi experience while giving service providers the tools and visibility they need to quickly resolve issues and enhance customer loyalty. We are excited to be teaming up with AIS Fibre to deliver a solution that will create a differentiated in-home Wi-Fi networking experience for their customers and ensure the ultrabroadband services they deliver can be used across the home."
