Nokia and Facebook work together to expand ecosystem for Fixed Wireless Access over 60 GHz

NOKIA

Nokia and Facebook work together to expand ecosystem for Fixed Wireless Access over 60 GHz

Press Release

25 February, 2018

Espoo, Finland - Nokia and Facebook are working to accelerate the adoption of 60 GHz fixed wireless access technologies to deliver gigabit services and connect more people, faster. The 60 GHz band allows high-speed broadband connectivity in urban or suburban areas, complementing existing fiber. Nokia will combine its worldwide delivery capabilities and wireless passive optical network (WPON) with Facebook's Terragraph technology to launch global gigabit broadband trials in 2018 with select customers.

Nokia's wireless passive optical network (WPON) technology provides a wireless gigabit drop to the home for broadband access networks. Facebook's Terragraph technology is a 60 GHz, multi-node wireless system that delivers a low-cost solution for high-speed wireless access. Combining WPON with Terragraph's mesh-routing and multi-hop capabilities allows broadband providers to wirelessly deliver gigabit services over wider areas with high reliability and meet growing demands for ultra-broadband access.

Nokia and Facebook will also work together to accelerate IEEE's 802.11ay industry standard, leveraging Nokia's Wireless PON innovation and Terragraph's efficient TDMA scheduling capabilities. The goal is to create a strong platform and ecosystem for introducing 60GHz Terragraph-certified solutions to the marketplace, and deliver gigabit services to more people, sooner.

Nokia last year launched its Wireless PON (WPON) solution, further expanding its fiber-to-the-most-economical-point toolkit. Wireless PON is based on 802.11ad WiGig technology and provides a wireless drop for fiber-to-the-home networks. Access points can be easily mounted on utility poles, street lights or a building facade, and deliver gigabit-per-second speeds to a self-installable WPON Home unit. By using the WPON solution rather than bringing fiber into every home, broadband providers can reduce up-front investment cost and deploy faster.

Julie Kunstler, Principal Analyst, Ovum's Next-gen Infrastructure Practice said: "Nokia and Facebook's collaboration is a perfect example of combining two strong solutions to bring gigabit broadband to more people faster. While fiber is being pushed deeper and deeper, the physical connection to the home or apartment requires additional resources. Combining Nokia's WPON solution with Facebook's Terragraph 60 GHz technology, ensures the future-proofing of bandwidth while meeting competitive time-to-market and cost points."

Yael Maguire, VP of Connectivity, Facebook, said:  "Terragraph is designed to help providers deploy fast and reliable connectivity for people in urban areas. Our partnership with Nokia will help advance Terragraph by building a robust, open ecosystem of interoperable commercial solutions based on 60GHz technologies."

Federico Guillén, president of Nokia Fixed Networks, said: "It is definitely exciting when two companies like Nokia and Facebook join their innovation strength to bring new technologies to market. Fixed-wireless access is gaining ground and perfectly complements our multi-technology mix to bring gigabit broadband to more people, sooner."

Nokia's "conscious factory in a box" concept anticipates fast-changing manufacturing needs of the future

NOKIA

Nokia's "conscious factory in a box" concept anticipates fast-changing manufacturing needs of the future

23 February 2018

Espoo, Finland - A Nokia-led group of 12 electronics industry players today unveiled the "factory in a box" concept, showing how manufacturers can stay ahead of the demands of Industry 4.0 through agile production that can be packed, transported and brought back into service in a matter of hours.

Nokia Factory in a Box

The group, which started working on the concept in the summer of 2017, aimed to build a single electronics manufacturing line using cargo containers that can be moved to locations as demand dictates. Collaboration was driven by the expected changes in manufacturing sparked by Industry 4.0, including cloud-based solutions, robotics and new electronic manufacturing IoT solutions, all of which will demand greater agility and flexibility from manufacturers. Potential use cases include:

  • Building for 'country of origin' requirements - The container can be driven to a location, build the required volume, and then be moved again as needed.
  • New product introduction - With new products, time to market is a competitive advantage. By moving the "factory in a box" to partners, prototyping can be quickly done and fixes quickly performed and tested.
  • Disaster recovery - When a site is hit by a natural disaster, business continuity plans kick in but can take time. With a spare portable factory, critical customer orders can still be achieved in a timely manner.

In late 2017, the project took a step forward at Nokia's Digital Creativity Lab opening in Munich, where a cargo container with a collaborative robot assembly station was packed, moved to a new location by truck, then restarted within hours at the new location where small Lego cars were assembled, proving the precision of the machines.

The final step in the proof of concept was achieved on February 9, 2018, when full electronic manufacturing of a printed circuit board and robotic assembly and testing took place. The group - Nokia, Beta Layout, DHL, Fuji, HARTING, Isel, isoloc, MTEK Consulting, Mycronic, Rehm Thermal Systems, Viscom, and 42Q - now plans to demonstrate this full capability at the Hanover Messe in April 2018.

The companies contributed the following:

  • Nokia: wireless communication for the solution, as well as experience in deploying Industry 4.0 solutions in its own operations
  • Beta Layout: support with the PCB
  • DHL: leading transportation know-how
  • Fuji: SMT manufacturing technology
  • HARTING: RFID solution for tracking, tracing and production control
  • Isel: workstation support with specialized pallets
  • Isoloc: motion softening solution
  • MTEK Consulting: operational expertise and robotics
  • Mycronic: high-speed jet printing and jet dispensing
  • Rehm Thermal Systems: PCB soldering
  • Viscom: optical inspections
  • 42Q: cloud-based manufacturing execution system

"These factories are perfectly suited to meet regional and innovation startup requirements, and can be as large as needed to meet build requirements by simply adding additional containers to the location," said Grant Marshall, head of Supply Network and Engineering in Nokia Operations. "This is a new business model Nokia would like to offer to its customers, and we are ready to experiment with this PoC with our first customers in 2018."

Nokia and T-Mobile achieve 1.3 Gbps speeds using Licensed Assisted Access

Press Release

  • Industry-first leverages Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) and five-component carrier aggregation on 14 antenna layers
  • Commercial Nokia AirScale Micro Remote Radio Head (RRH) solution used to aggregate licensed and unlicensed LTE carriers and deliver gigabit speeds with 4x4 MIMO and 256 QAM
  • Lays ground for enhanced network performance in busy, urban locations on path toward 5G

22 February, 2018

Espoo, Finland and Bellevue, Washington - Nokia and T-Mobile achieved download speeds of 1.3 Gbps using commercial Nokia technology with Licensed Assisted Access (LAA). This is an industry first using the Nokia commercial AirScale platform to support 14-layer transmissions.

This achievement shows how wireless companies like T-Mobile can leverage available licensed and unlicensed spectrum assets to boost performance for customers in high-traffic urban locations, using Nokia's technology for the deployment of high-capacity small cells as they evolve network infrastructures toward 5G.

Neville Ray, chief technology officer at T-Mobile, said: "We are working to deploy small cells that support LAA and build on the LTE-Advanced features we've deployed across the country, laying a foundation for 5G. Our priority is ensuring customers have the best mobile experience, so we are accelerating LAA and five carrier aggregation to give them even higher speeds and greater network performance."

Marc Rouanne, president of Mobile Networks at Nokia, said: "Nokia is providing a path towards 5G that allows operators like T-Mobile to attain gigabit speeds with LTE by leveraging all available licensed and unlicensed spectrum. With LAA, we are helping T-Mobile gain higher download peak rates than could be achieved with licensed spectrum alone. This adds capacity beyond the spectrum licensed to this operator, and the existing network sites are used with limited TCO investment."

The tests, conducted at T-Mobile's lab in Bellevue, Washington, used commercial Nokia AirScale Micro RRH connected to an AirScale system module. Speeds of 1.3 Gbps were achieved by aggregating LTE carriers in licensed and unlicensed bands using five-component carrier aggregation, 256QAM, 4x4 MIMO and LAA on 14 antenna layers.

US Securities and Exchange Commission) jätetyissä asiakirjoissa. Muut tuntemattomat tai odottamattomat tekijät tai vääriksi osoittautuvat oletukset voivat aiheuttaa todellisten tulosten olennaisen poikkeamisen tulevaisuutta koskevissa lausumissa esitetyistä odotuksista. Nokia ei sitoudu julkisesti päivittämään tai muuttamaan tulevaisuutta koskevia lausumia uuden tiedon, tulevaisuuden tapahtumien tai muun syyn johdosta, paitsi siltä osin kuin sillä on siihen lainmukainen velvollisuus.
