Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced six new applications deployed on the Nokia MX Industrial Edge (MXIE) to help enterprises improve worker safety, site security, enhance operational efficiency and secure OT environments in manufacturing, mining, ports, and chemical industries.

 

According to Analysys Mason, enterprises worldwide using private LTE and 5G are projected to spend $6 billion by 2030 on industrial applications enabling new use cases and enhancing existing ones. In line with industry developments, Nokia MXIE on-premises edge solution, part of Nokia's private wireless offering, supports ecosystem neutrality enabling the deployment of applications to help support growing diverse Industry 4.0 use case needs.

 

Offered as-a-service, these new applications are Ascom Ofelia, Fogsphere, innovaphone PBX & myApps, Nokia Real-time eXtended Reality Multimedia (RXRM), OneLayer, and Redinent and join our existing portfolio of Nokia, and third-party digitalization applications.

 

Improving situational awareness to enhance worker safety and site security

Worker safety remains a high priority in industrial settings. The new applications enable digitalization to increase situational awareness, better deal with incidents, and increase the use of real-time data and knowledge which are key to improving worker safety and site security. The new applications include the following:

  • Ascom Ofelia – Ascom Ofelia helps enterprises shift from separate alarm systems to one unified alarm solution, improving incident management, increasing situational awareness, and ensuring a safer workplace.
  • Fogsphere® - A comprehensive, multi-modal AI platform to enhance workplace safety, security, and operational intelligence, with real-time solutions for PPE compliance, behavioral analysis, emergency management, access control, intrusion detection and vehicle monitoring.

 

Connecting workers to achieve higher efficiency

Connected worker applications are essential to overcome workforce challenges such as worker shortages, retention issues, and difficulty attracting new talent, which are key to achieving the efficiency and productivity needed to outperform the competition. Applications can give workers real-time information to make their jobs easier and machine tele-operation more efficient. New items include the following:

  • innovaphone PBX & myApps - Secure, scalable IP telephone system with
    built-in features like conferencing, voicemail and waiting queues for advanced business communication and smart business applications. Its on-premise MXIE solution ensures full data control and meets ISO27001 standards.
  • Real-time eXtended Reality Multimedia (RXRM) - Software solution with low latency 360° video and 3D OZO audio capture that helps to improve productivity, employee safety, teleoperations, situational awareness & remote technical support.

 

Securing OT assets to strengthen the overall security

Asset visibility, zero trust principles and effective vulnerability management in OT environments will be enabled by the new applications including:

  • OneLayer - Discovers, manages, secures, and classifies all IIoT assets on private networks, including those behind cellular routers. Acting as a zero-trust access broker, it enforces zero-trust security principles within OT environments while delivering zero-touch asset management and operational intelligence.
  • Redinent - Discovers IIoT assets and helps create inventory, identifies IIoT vulnerabilities and ongoing threats. It informs the security operation center (SOC) about the findings.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced new industrial devices to help enterprises increase worker safety, productivity and situational awareness in industrial environments. The new devices include new field routers and new EX-protected device types/formfactors.

 

Part of the Nokia comprehensive industrial device portfolio, these new ruggedized devices enable enterprises to develop additional Industry 4.0 use cases and improve worker safety while operating in potentially dangerous or high-security industrial environments such as mines, ports, chemical and oil and gas facilities.

 

This portfolio extension is part of Nokia's drive to help industries simplify and accelerate digital transformation by offering a unified platform that includes edge computing, applications and business-critical connectivity. These additions to the Nokia device portfolio complement the existing EX and high IP protection devices which feature handhelds, dongles and field routers that help connect people, machines, and sensors.

 

New-generation field routers increase data transfer capacity
With advanced technical capabilities, these new indoor and outdoor routers boost device capacity and bandwidth for data-intensive applications, connecting machines, vehicles, and sensors. The standout feature, the in-built Nokia MX Boost, maximizes performance and reliability by concurrently leveraging 4.9G/LTE, 5G, and Wi-Fi 6, meeting the demands of high-capacity Industry 4.0 use cases.

 

EX-protected devices help keep workers connected
Workers need rigorously certified equipment in hazardous environments where combustible dust, flammable liquids, gases and electricity can increase the risk of explosions. As part of the Nokia one platform for industrial digitalization, Nokia now offers additional EX-protected devices, including a 5G tablet and PTT handheld from world-renowned i.safe MOBILE.

 

The 5G Android tablet, designed for data communication in hazardous environments integrates with LTE/4.9G,5G networks and Wi-Fi 6, features a replaceable battery and programmable buttons for custom applications. The 5G PTT handheld device ensures mission-critical push-to-talk over cellular communication via public or campus networks (4.9G/LTE, 5G or Wi-Fi).

Stillwater, Oklahoma – Nokia today announced that Centranet, a leading electrical cooperative, has become the first company to demonstrate a 50Gbps fiber internet connection for a tribal nation in Oklahoma. The live commercial trial, using Nokia's Lightspan fiber solution, allowed Centranet to connect a pilot member of the Sac and Fox nation to one of the fastest residential internet speeds available globally. This marks a significant milestone for the company and its ability to close the digital divide for rural and Indigenous communities.

 

The groundbreaking connection was unveiled at the Future of Rural Broadband Showcase, underscoring the company's commitment to delivering world-class broadband technology to historically underserved regions. This is the first live commercial trial of 50G PON technology in a tribal nation, demonstrating how Nokia's fiber access platform can be used to provide future-proof broadband access to communities of all sizes and densities.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced significant enhancements to its Corteca software suite, making it the industry's first platform to adopt open standards and protocols for both home networking and application lifecycle management. The Corteca Home Controller now supports prpl LCM, the Open Container Initiative (OCI), and the TR-369 User Services Platform (USP) protocol, giving operators a vendor-agnostic solution that simplifies the management of in-home broadband gateways, Wi-Fi connectivity, and applications.

 

Nokia's platform standardizes the management and interoperability of applications installed on broadband devices. The Corteca Developer Toolkit enables 3rd party software providers or CSPs themselves to create applications based on prpl LCM. By using TR-369 and OCI, Corteca allows operators to take a consistent, standardized approach to install, uninstall, or update any of the applications it delivers to customers. Leveraging open standards unlocks the CSP from vendor lock-in, enables new monetization opportunities, and helps the industry create better in-home experiences for the end-user.

 

Built on open standards, Corteca provides operators with a highly efficient cloud platform for managing broadband devices, in-home Wi-Fi connectivity, and the applications running on those devices. With the Home Controller, operators can deliver a managed Wi-Fi service across a multi-vendor environment that improves the overall in-home Wi-Fi experience for its subscribers.   • The prpl Life Cycle Management (prpl LCM) is open-source, platform-independent software that leverages common high-level application programming interfaces (API), giving service providers an ideal platform to manage value-added applications. Prpl LCM is an open-source project that works with open industry standards, such as the Open Container Initiative (OCI) and the Broadband Forum TR-369.
  • TR-369, also known as User Services Platform (USP), is a Broadband Forum standard that provides a unified platform for managing connected devices, Wi-Fi, and applications in the home. It enables service providers to deliver consistent and reliable management across a variety of devices and services, ensuring interoperability and reducing operational complexities.
  • The Open Container Initiative (OCI) is an open governance structure for the express purpose of creating open industry standards around container formats and runtimes.

Nokia Threat Intelligence Report finds cybercriminal attacks on telco infrastructure are accelerating, driven by Generative AI and automation

  • The number and frequency of DDoS attacks have grown from one or two a day to well over 100 per day in many networks, based on traffic monitored by Nokia from June 2023 to June 2024.
  • North America has seen the highest number of cyberattacks due to the concentration and scale of telecom infrastructure and large enterprises in the United States.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today released its tenth Threat Intelligence Report which shows that cyberattacks on telecom infrastructure are accelerating, as cybercriminals increasingly harness Generative AI and automation to increase the speed, volume, and sophistication of their attacks.

 

Among the report's key findings:

 

  • DDoS: The number and frequency of Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, which can overwhelm telco infrastructure with traffic and make it inoperable, have grown from one or two a day to well over 100 per day in many networks.
  • Bots: Botnets continue to be the primary source of DDoS attack volume, representing about 60% of DDoS traffic monitored by Nokia from June 2023 to June 2024. During that time period, residential proxies became a prominent tool for more advanced application-layer attacks.
  • Regions: North America has seen the highest number of cyberattacks – accounting for about one-third of the total – due to the concentration and scale of telecom infrastructure and large enterprises in the United States.

A botnet is a network of computers and devices controlled and used by cybercriminals for launching malicious activities, such as DDoS attacks and the theft of personal and sensitive information.

 

Reflecting a trend of recent years, the growth in DDoS attacks has been fueled by the proliferation of hundreds of thousands of insecure IoT devices, ranging from smart refrigerators to smartwatches, which often have lax security protections and have gigabit and multi-gigabit broadband capacity that facilitate the spread of malware. The most common malware in telecommunication networks was found to be a bot that scans for vulnerable devices, with weak encryption, passwords, or design flaws.

 

East Asia also faces significant data leaks due to inadvertent exposures by companies themselves, while Western Europe contends with a mix of cyber espionage and financially motivated breaches, according to the Threat Intelligence Report.

 

Even as Generative AI enables faster, more sophisticated attacks, communication service providers are increasingly using the same technology to improve their response times and effectiveness against cyberthreats.

 

Another threat concerns System-on-chips (SoCs), hardware-integrated circuits that incorporate computer components that drive higher computing and network performance and minimize power consumption. Cybercriminals are increasingly targeting SoCs to exploit vulnerabilities in various components, such as firmware, software, and hardware interfaces.

 

Quantum computing is another example where new threats are emerging. Organizations like the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which recently standardized the first algorithms that will form components of the world's approach to counter the potential threats of quantum computing, are continuing to help shape security strategies globally.

 

The Threat Intelligence Report is compiled by Nokia's Threat Intelligence Center, the Nokia Cyber Security Center, the Nokia Security Operations Center, and the Nokia Deepfield Emergency Response Team (ERT), the company's industry-leading IP network and DDoS security experts.

Espoo, Finland – Today, Nokia launched the Beacon 19, a new Wi-Fi 7 gateway designed to provide seamless, high-capacity mesh networking enabling operators to deliver a superior broadband experience. As a tri-band device, the Beacon 19 offers up to 19Gbps of Wi-Fi capacity – essential for the expanding demands of streaming, online gaming, video, smart home, and security applications in the home.  

 

With the widespread adoption of XGS-PON and the rise of 25G PON services, Wi-Fi upgrades are critical for delivering multi-gig speeds into the home. Nokia's Beacon 19 is designed specifically for this purpose, allowing service providers to offer a best-in-class Wi-Fi 7 experience. By incorporating Wi-Fi 7's full capabilities, the Beacon 19 brings up to19Gbps of Wi-Fi capacity, reducing network congestion with its three radio bands to eliminate slowdowns and buffering issues. Moreover, The Beacon 19 supports multi-link operations (MLO), enhancing connection speeds by allowing devices to simultaneously send and receive data across different frequency bands and channels.

 

Nokia's new Beacon 19 is powered by its Corteca software. Nokia Corteca works end-to-end, from applications embedded in the device, through the home, and into the cloud. Built on open industry standards (TR-369, EasyMesh), Corteca integrates advanced Wi-Fi and device management while offering a marketplace with applications -including 3rd party- that run on fiber (ONT) gateways, FWA gateways and mesh Wi-Fi beacons.
