  • Proof of Concept (PoC) marks first successful testing validating the IOWN Global Forum vision to realize a smarter world by 2030 by dramatically lowering power consumption by 100x, increasing transmission capacity by 125x, and lowering end-to-end latency by 200x
  • Test uses the Nokia optical network solution to successfully demonstrate low latency and extension of transmission distance over mobile fronthaul network between the 5G Distributed Unit (DU) and Radio Unit (RU) over an All Photonic Network (APN)

18 January 2024

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Nokia and NTT Corporation successfully completed a joint PoC using Nokia's mobile fronthaul solution over an All Photonic Network (APN), aligned with the objectives of the Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) Global Forum. The PoC addresses the growing need for high-speed connections driven by the virtualization and cloudification of key mobile core components in 5G and upcoming 6G mobile communications networks.

As a participant in IOWN, Nokia aims to provide advanced capabilities including low-power consumption, ultra-wide bandwidth, large-scale simulations, and ultra-realistic UI/UX for future services with cutting-edge solutions such as next-generation photonics-based technologies. In order to solve various social issues and realize a smarter world by 2030, IOWN technology will seek to lower power consumption by 100x, increase transmission capacity by 125x, and lower end-to-end latency by 200x, compared to traditional networks.

Nokia's high-performance optical solution used for the lab tests includes the 1830 Time-sensitive Packet Switch (TPS) optimized for mobile xHaul applications, and the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) for WDM optical transport. The PoC demonstrated dynamic distribution of RAN resources to 5G radios using optical routing to better respond to evolving traffic demands while also ensuring optimal energy consumption compared to traditional fronthaul solutions that provide fixed and inefficient links. The test measurements met key requirements for latency, synchronization, and mobile functionality associated with mobile fronthaul in 5G networks.

James Watt, Vice President and General Manager, Optical Networks Division at Nokia, said: "Nokia is proud to contribute to the IOWN GF and we are looking forward to our continued journey with NTT and other IOWN GF members. As an innovative and trusted global optical leader, Nokia is deeply aware of the growing need for high-speed and low-latency connections because of the virtualization of key mobile core components. This test showcases that our high-performance optical solutions are designed to effectively address this need."

Katsuhiko Kawazoe, Representative Member of the Board, Senior Executive Vice President(CTO/ CIO/ CDO), NTT, said: "I believe this is a significant achievement proving the effectiveness of the IOWN Global Forum All Photonics Network for the mobile fronthaul. The result clearly illustrates technical feasibilities for a robust and flexible commercial mobile network with low power consumption. NTT will continue to collaborate with Nokia and other IOWN Global Forum members to develop the next generation of ICT infrastructures."

NL-ix deploys Nokia IP routing to transform into European-wide distributed business Internet Exchange

Press Release

NL-ix deploys Nokia IP routing to transform into European-wide distributed business Internet Exchange

  • NL-ix will evolve its European Networks with Nokia to create carrier-grade, fully redundant 800 Gigabit Ethernet (GE) routing across its entire European footprint, evolving to meet the needs of European Large Enterprises.
  • Resilience, performance at scale, and security of Nokia IP routing with FP5 silicon meets five 9's availability requirements mission-critical businesses demand

16 January 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the further expansion of its relationship with NL-ix, Europe's largest distributed Internet Exchange provider (IXP), extending the rollout of 7750 Service Routers (SR) with speeds of up to 800GE interfaces from the Netherlands to the more than 100 datacenters NL-ix operates continent wide. NL-ix is now able to offer dedicated enterprise business Internet Exchange services by providing five 9's network uptime, any port at any speed up to 800GE, while consuming less energy and real estate.

Already among the top global Internet Exchanges, NL-ix had previously deployed the Nokia 800GE systems in its Amsterdam datacenters, where daily average traffic regularly peaked above 8 Tb/s in 2023. To accommodate traffic peaks across the entire network, NL-ix will deploy a range of Nokia's SR family of IP routers, including large-scale FP5-based multi-slot systems for core routing, to smaller IP routers built for edge and satellite-based applications.

Now, with the deployment of Nokia's 800GE systems Europe-wide, NL-ix is supercharging its network, transforming from a localized Internet Exchange into a European business connectivity platform capable of providing carrier-grade resiliency that supports 5 9's availability of its network services. With breadth, resiliency, speed and sustainability, NL-ix is uniquely positioned to attract new customers in sectors such as banking, insurance and healthcare who have traditionally relied on exclusive private networks to achieve these same levels of security, reliability and deterministic service for much of their business transactions.

Jan Hoogenboom, CEO at NL-ix, said: "Over the next four years, in an intensive partnership with Nokia, NL-ix will be investing heavily in reinforcing its strategic position as the leading pan-European Enterprise Internet and Cloud Exchange. As a robust foundation under it's single-coherent and carrier grade network fabric, NL-ix will deploy Nokia's FP5 silicon and 800 Gbit/s technology building upon Nokia's 7750 SR, with far more speed and sustainable performance, deeply embedded in our fine grained 100+ local datacenter footprint throughout Europe. This technology investment will boost our business transformation allowing us to provide European enterprises mission critical services with the insight and control of our unique Elastic Internet technology from the very capillaries of the European Internet."

Mark Vanderhaegen, Director of Webscale Business at Nokia, said: "We are delighted to work with such an innovative leader as NL-ix as they deploy Nokia's FP5-powered IP routing technology across Europe. With 800GE routing, NL-ix has a platform for unrelenting internet traffic growth and sustainable business connectivity that sets new benchmarks for reliability, performance and scale."

Sisäpiiritieto: Nokia ennakoi tuloksensa jäävän alle vuodelle 2023 annetun taloudellisen ohjeistuksen, sillä lisenssien uusimisneuvottelujen odotetaan jatkuvan ensi vuoden puolelle

Nokia Oyj

Pörssitiedote

30.12.2023 klo 00:15
