Press Release

Nokia and Orange set record with 800Gbps transmission trial on 6,600km Dunant live network to prepare for soaring traffic on strategic trans-Atlantic route

  • Trial utilized Nokia 6th-generation super-coherent Photonic Service Engine (PSE-6), signaling readiness of Nokia 1830 family of optical transport platforms to carry next-gen 800GE IP services as global traffic demand soars
  • Field trial validates Orange network capability on transatlantic submarine cable to support 400GE and 800GE transport services over its entire network

6 December 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and Orange today announced the successful completion of a record 800Gbps per wavelength transmission over Orange's award-winning 6,600km Dunant transatlantic route using the Nokia PSE-6s super coherent optics productized in the Nokia 1830 Photonic Services Interconnect – Modular (PSI-M). Conducted under challenging real-world network conditions, the trial validates Orange's ability to increase its existing optical network capacity to support end-to-end 400GE and next-generation 800GE services.

The Orange Dunant transatlantic subsea cable, which received the 2021 Global Carrier Award for subsea project of the year, is a unique "hybrid", terrestrial and subsea connectivity solution for wholesale customers. Traffic is able to reach four different points of presence in the Paris region, giving more connection options to wholesale customers.

In the trial, Orange and Nokia demonstrated error-free performance at 800Gbps over a 6,600km link between the cable landing stations at Virginia Beach, U.S.A. and St Hilaire de Riez, France, vs 400G in 2021. The trial also demonstrated 700Gbps over a total link distance of 7,345km from Virginia Beach to Paris, vs 300G also in 2021. The terrestrial links consisted of nine spans of Orange's existing fiber network, through multiple cascaded reconfigurable optical add/drop multipliers (ROADMs), using 150GHz WDM spectrum channels.

The field trial, which successfully validates a planned upgrade of the Orange long-haul network using Nokia's PSE-6s super coherent optics, demonstrates the ability to expand the capacity and spectral efficiency of existing subsea cable systems while reducing the number of coherent optics needed by 33% and lowering total power consumption compared with existing coherent optics. The introduction of the PSE-6 super coherent capabilities across the Nokia 1830 portfolio enables high-performance, spectrally efficient transport of high-speed services across long-haul, ultra-long haul and trans-oceanic networks spanning multiple 1000s of kilometers.

Jean-Louis Le Roux, Vice President International Networks at Orange, said: "This trial demonstrates Orange's commitment to supporting ever-greater network scale and new high-bandwidth services across our existing global network, which combined with our subsea networks truly powers global connectivity for our customers. We are pleased to be the first operator to validate Nokia's latest generation of super coherent optics in a subsea application as an important enabler to our constant need for network upgrades, with high spectral efficiency, sustainability and operational deployment flexibility."

James Watt, Head of the Optical Networks Division at Nokia, said: "We are very pleased with the success of Nokia's high-performance PSE-6s in this trial and delighted to continue to work with Orange in support of their network upgrade plans. As data volumes grow unabated worldwide, innovation in optical networks is critical to stay far ahead of the curve. Nokia launches gigabit Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) solution for cable operators

Press Release

Nokia launches gigabit Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) solution for cable operators

  • Nokia introduces industry's first integrated, Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Multimedia over Coax Alliance Access (MOCA Access™) solution.
  • New solution enables cable operators to deliver multi-gigabit services using existing coaxial cables in MDUs and buildings that are too difficult to serve with fiber.
  • Expanded Gigabit Connect solution with MoCA uses products from InCoax.

December 5, 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it will add a MoCA Access™ solution to its Gigabit Connect portfolio, giving cable operators additional options for addressing customers in multi-dwelling units (MDUs) that are difficult to serve with fiber. Nokia is the first vendor to offer an integrated FTTH and MoCA Access solution, seamlessly linking the two. The addition of MoCA enables Multiple System Operators (MSO) to deliver multi-gigabit services over the existing coaxial cable in MDU buildings where fiber installation is not feasible, as well as in coax-wired commercial buildings such as hotels and hospitals.

Cable operators are upgrading their networks to fiber because it offers the highest performance, scalability and reliability. However, fiber installation in MDUs often requires significant construction work and coordination with building owners and tenants, making the process complex, costly and time consuming for operators. In older MDUs, cable routing and structural access may make fiber installation impossible.

Nokia's new Gigabit Connect solution allows operators to easily combine fiber and MoCA Access to connect subscribers in MDUs. Nokia's MoCA access solution connects to the FTTH network, uses the buildings existing coax, and is managed as a single system. Notably, MoCA also allows for coexistence with legacy services, including terrestrial, satellite and cable TV and DOCSIS.

Jeff Heynen, Vice President, Broadband Access and Home Networking at Dell'Oro, said: "As cable operators migrate to FTTH to address the market, they will need to find a way to service existing customers in MDUs that lack fiber. MoCA is an easy and cost-effective method to do so. With the addition of MoCA to their industry-leading Gigabit Connect solution, Nokia is clearly committed to helping its customers maximize the reach and revenue potential of their FTTH networks."

Geert Heyninck, Vice President of Broadband Networks for Fixed Networks at Nokia, said: "Solutions like MoCA, are going to play an important role in helping operators connect customers to gigabit speeds in difficult to reach buildings. The addition of MoCA to our Gigabit Connect solution enables cable operators to move to fiber faster and better serve locations that are too difficult or expensive to run with fiber. The integration also makes it easy to operate since both the FTTH and MoCA can be managed as a single network."

About the solution

  • Nokia will resell MoCA from InCoax products as part of its Gigabit Connect solution which easily combines with Nokia's PON OLT portfolio.
  • The initial products offered include a one-port indoor/outdoor DPU serving up to sixteen subscribers, two models of modems that can be self-installed by the consumer, and a passive splitter/combiner to enable coexistence with legacy services.
  • The Gigabit Connect MoCA solution can deliver a 2Gbps symmetrical subscriber experience with low latency on both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint deployments.
  • The solution will be managed as a single pane of glass through Nokia's Altiplano Access Controller.
  • Nokia's Gigabit Connect portfolio also includes G.fast technology for use on twisted pair.

Nokia kommentoi AT&T:n toimittajasuunnitelmia

Nokia Oyj

Pörssitiedote

5.12.2023 klo 4.30

Nokia kommentoi AT&T:n toimittajasuunnitelmia

Nokia on tietoinen AT&T:n suunnitelmista aloittaa viisivuotinen O-RAN-yhteistyö muiden toimittajien kanssa. Tämän johdosta Nokia ennakoi, että Matkapuhelinverkot-liiketoimintaryhmän liikevaihto AT&T:n osalta laskee seuraavan 2–3 vuoden aikana. AT&T:n osuus Matkapuhelinverkot-liiketoimintaryhmän liikevaihdosta on ollut vuoden 2023 alusta tähän asti noin 5–8 %.

Nokian johtajuus Open RAN -verkoissa on laajalti tunnustettu.

AT&T on vahvistanut Nokialle, että radioverkkoihin liittyvän päätöksen taustalla olivat AT&T:n sisäiset syyt.

Me tulemme jatkossakin investoimaan vahvasti T&K-työhön ja kehittämään markkinoiden parhaita tuotteita asiakkaillemme."

Nokia järjestää sijoittaja- ja analyytikkotilaisuuden 12.12.2023 Nokian pääkonttorilla Espoossa. Tilaisuudessa Nokia kertoo tarkemmin strategiastaan ja antaa päivityksen Matkapuhelinverkot- ja Pilvi- ja verkkopalvelut -liiketoimintaryhmien suunnitelmista. Tilaisuutta voi seurata myös webcastin välityksellä.

Nokia comments on AT&T vendor plans

Nokia Corporation

Stock Exchange Release

Nokia comments on AT&T vendor plans

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has a wide-ranging relationship with AT&T, supplying products and services across wireless, wireline and other network technologies, alongside similar relationships with other major North American network operators.

Nokia is aware of AT&T's plans to commit to an Open RAN deployment in collaboration with other vendors over the next five years. As a result, Nokia now expects revenue from AT&T in Mobile Networks will decrease over the next 2-3 years. AT&T accounted for 5-8% of Mobile Networks net sales year-to-date in 2023. The already announced action Nokia is taking to reduce its cost base is expected to partially mitigate the impact of AT&T's decision. Nokia expects Mobile Networks to remain profitable over the coming years but this decision would delay the timeline of achieving double digit operating margin by up to 2 years.

Nokia has invested heavily in the last few years to deliver market leading radio technology and a highly competitive product portfolio. This has helped it gain the most 5G market share since Q1 2022 among the top RAN suppliers, reaching 29% in Q3, excluding China (source: Dell'Oro). Nokia remains one of the few global vendors of mobile network equipment with significant scale and R&D investment capability to deliver market leading products to customers and while the company is taking action to lower its cost-base, it will protect its R&D output.

The company is also a recognized leader in Open RAN. It is fully committed to O-RAN and together with its ecosystem of partners is providing increased choice and industry leading performance in O-RAN. Most recently, Japan's NTT DOCOMO has selected Nokia's O-RAN 5G network for their commercial deployment.

Nokia remains a key partner for AT&T within both its Network Infrastructure and Cloud and Network Services businesses. AT&T will also continue to buy products such as microwave radio links and femto solutions from Mobile Networks. AT&T confirmed to Nokia that while its decision was driven by reasons specific to AT&T, it believes Nokia has highly competitive products and services in Radio Access Networks (RAN) and an accomplished R&D capability.

Pekka Lundmark, President and CEO of Nokia, said, "Whilst the news from AT&T is disappointing, our Mobile Networks business has made significant progress in recent years, increasing our RAN market share and technology leadership. I firmly believe we have the right strategy to create value for our shareholders into the future with opportunities to gain share, diversify our business and improve our profitability.
