Nokia and UNICEF partner to bridge the digital divide in Senegal

Press Release

Nokia and UNICEF partner to bridge the digital divide in Senegal

  • Nokia and UNICEF to help bridge the digital divide and provide a dedicated digital education and coding program in select parts of Senegal.
  • The principal beneficiaries are more than 100 teachers, as well as more than 10,000 middle school students in underserved areas.
  • The scope of work includes specific sessions on digital skills, as well as upgrading equipment and connectivity.

18 January 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today announced a new collaboration with UNICEF to bridge the digital divide by helping to improve digital education and training in schools in select parts of Senegal, West Africa. This activity is in line with Nokia's enhanced Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy, as well as Nokia's commitment to advance digital skills.

Nokia is focused on the role its products play in solving some of the world's most pressing challenges, using connectivity and digitalization to restore stalled productivity, provide inclusive access to opportunity and relieve pressure on the environment and natural ecosystems.

Nicole Robertson, Vice President, Environmental Social and Governance at Nokia, said: "Nokia plays an important role in bridging the digital divide by providing connectivity to unconnected and underserved communities. Connectivity, when coupled with digital skills, creates greater opportunity for employment, access to education and healthcare and participation in the digital economy. I am therefore delighted to announce Nokia's partnership with UNICEF to advance digital skills and coding for children and young people in Senegal."

The project with UNICEF Finland and UNICEF Senegal will involve teachers, as well as students in underserved areas in Senegal. The focus will be on digital education and training activities so students can develop their digital skills, including coding.

Silvia Danailov, UNICEF Representative in Senegal: "UNICEF works to ensure that no child or young person is left behind in the digital revolution. No matter who they are, where they live, or where they come from, all children should benefit from the innovations that digital technologies bring to education – inside the classroom or at home. This catalytic partnership with Nokia is a major step in furthering quality education through innovative technology for children in Senegal."

Nokia and Telefonica successfully test 25G PON technology for the first time in Spain

Press Release

Nokia and Telefonica successfully test 25G PON technology for the first time in Spain

January 17, 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Telefonica Spain has successfully trialed 25G PON technology. The trial, the first in Spain to demonstrate symmetric speeds of 20 Gbps, showed that the state-of-the-art 25G PON can co-exist with Telefonica's existing GPON solution.

Telefonica, with almost 60 million FTTH homes passed already deployed in their multiple business units, has validated with this trial that current GPON and XGS-PON broadband technologies can co-exist seamlessly on the same fiber with the 25G PON. High speeds aligned with low latency, get the network ready for future exciting applications like the Metaverse. 25G PON delivers huge symmetrical bandwidth capacity that will support new use cases and bandwidth requirements.

Gonzalo Garzón, Head of Fixed Access at Telefónica España at Telefonica's, said: "Telefonica was the first operator in Spain to provide gigabit connectivity, but we are not stopping there. Consumer bandwidth demands never halts and exciting applications, like VR gaming, will always be evolved to make the most of available bandwidth. New FTTH technologies give us even more opportunities than home connectivity. With their massive uptick in capacity we'll be able to offer new business services on the same network."

Bjorn Capens, VP Europe, Nokia Fixed Networks, said: "Thanks to our Quillion chipset, this 25G PON proof of concept with Telefonica has demonstrated that the huge bandwidth-capacity can be easily added to their existing networks, co-existing with their existing PON technologies. This means customers on the same fiber line can be served with GPON, XGS-PON or 25G GPON, making it much easier to manage upgrade cycles."

Notes to editors

Nokia's 25G PON solution utilizes the world's first implementation of 25G PON technology and includes Lightspan and ISAM access nodes, Quillion based Multi-PON line cards and fiber modems.

Dependent on the optics chosen, 25G PON supports symmetrical bitrates (25Gb/s in downstream and 25G in upstream) and asymmetrical bitrates (25/10).

Usually located in telecom central offices, Nokia's high-capacity access nodes are deployed for massive scale fiber roll-outs. They connect thousands of users via optical fibre, aggregate their broadband traffic and send it deeper in the network. The fiber access nodes can support multiple fiber technologies including GPON, XGS-PON, 25G PON and Point-to-Point Ethernet to deliver a wide range of services with the best fit technology.

Nokia ONT (Optical Network Termination) devices, or fiber modems, are located at the user location. They terminate the optical fibre connection and delivers broadband services within the user premises or cell sites.

Nokia to upgrade VodafoneZiggo’s IP interconnect network in The Netherlands

Press Release

Nokia to upgrade VodafoneZiggo's IP interconnect network in The Netherlands

  • Nokia's innovative IP routing solutions, including its 7750 Service Router (SR) platforms, will be deployed in 350 sites to provide the foundation for future-ready integrated communication and entertainment services for consumers and businesses

11 January 2023

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced it has been selected to upgrade VodafoneZiggo's nationwide IP network, expanding the two companies' long-term relationship. With the deployment, VodafoneZiggo is building a network to enable a new generation of fixed and mobile services, including 5G, and to provide sufficient scale and quality of service (QoS) for the anticipated growth in network traffic and advanced services over the next decade.

This part of the network, which spans across 350 locations, reliably and deterministically transports terabytes of communication and entertainment services delivered to VodafoneZiggo's consumer and business customers.

VodafoneZiggo will deploy redundant Nokia 7750 SR-1 routers, powered by its innovative FP routing silicon to deliver fixed and mobile services. The advanced QoS capabilities of FP silicon enable network convergence with performance certainty for all service traffic. FP5 will provide more than three times capacity increase, with 800GE routing interfaces, and a 75 percent power savings over previous generations. The backwards compatibility and programmability of FP silicon further extends the life of the SR systems to support future evolution of network standards and services, helping VodafoneZiggo build a sustainable network that can evolve to changing customer needs for years to come.

Leo-Geert van den Berg, Director Fixed Network at VodafoneZiggo, said: "We are now opening a new chapter in the long relationship with Nokia with this IP routing deal. This solution with its product features will allow us to aggregate the traffic from cable, fiber and mobile access services, and help us evolve our IP network to match the growing customer base and capacity requirements."

Rafael de Fermín, Senior Vice President of the Network Infrastructure business in Europe at Nokia, said: "We are excited to expand our relationship with VodafoneZiggo and support the evolution of their network architecture and services. Modelling shows that with this IP network, VodafoneZiggo can handle the next 10 years of traffic growth and at the same time reduce energy consumption per bit – a real sustainable investment for the future."
