Banking malware threats surging as mobile banking increases – Nokia Threat Intelligence Report

Espoo, Finland – The Nokia 2021 Threat Intelligence Report announced today shows that banking malware threats are sharply increasing as cyber criminals target the rising popularity of mobile banking on smartphones, with plots aimed at stealing personal banking credentials and credit card information.

 

The report, based on data aggregated from network traffic monitored on more than 200 million devices globally where Nokia's NetGuard Endpoint Security product is deployed, showed an 80%, year-on-year increase in the first half of the year in the number of new banking trojans, which also try to steal SMS messages containing one-time passwords.

 

"A significant amount of this activity is focused in Europe and Latin America, but this activity is continuously spread to other regions of the world," according to the report. "Banking trojans use a variety of tricks to collect the information. These include capturing keystrokes, overlaying bank login screens with their own transparent overlay relaying captured information to the intended target, taking screen snapshots, and even accessing Google Authenticator codes."

 

Banking malware has been targeted mainly at Android phones, for years the most targeted mobile device type for cyber criminals due to Android's ubiquity and developer openness, with some banking trojans among the most successful malware attacks in 2021.

 

The Threat Intelligence Report says that most banking applications allow users to add a multi-factor authentication feature to their accounts to make it more difficult for cybercriminals to obtain personal information. Users are strongly recommended to avoid mobile banking from easily accessible public WiFi access points; and to use both multi-factor authentication when available and strong passwords, which avoid common personal details like birthdays.

 

The report also found that Covid-19 related malware incidents in residential networks have leveled off at 2.5% after a peak in December 2020 of 3.2%. This demonstrates that people are more aware of the threats posed by Covid-related cyber-attacks and are taking steps to secure their home working environment.

 

IoT botnets, a network of devices connected with malware, continue to grow in size and sophistication, due to the rising use of IoT devices, like "smart" refrigerators and video surveillance cameras. One known as Mozi, which uses a peer-to-peer command and control protocol, has been used to create botnets consisting of around 500,000 individual devices. Mozi actively scans the network and uses a suite of known vulnerabilities to exploit additional IoT devices. IoT botnets are responsible for 32% of the malware incidents detected by Nokia's NetGuard Endpoint Security.

Banking trojans have dramatically increased over the last year as digital banking becomes more prevalent – and this is a trend we see continuing into the future which reinforces the need for better online practices and having robust endpoint security in place."

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today introduced the latest additions to its industry-leading Wavence product portfolio with a new range of indoor and outdoor backhaul solutions targeting mobile operators and mission-critical service providers. The new products cover all use cases including short-haul, long-haul, E-Band, and SDN, and offer a highly scalable, high-capacity solution.

 

The new Nokia Wavence MSS-XE is a scalable, compact indoor Split Mount solution that addresses high-capacity coverage requirements. MSS-XE's small size supports a range of installation and deployment scenarios as well as indoor rack space constraints. It hosts seven 10 gigabit ethernet and four 1 gigabit ports for unmatched flexibility, scalability, and capacity. MSS-XE has low power consumption and can handle a wide temperature range spanning -40 degrees to 65 degrees Celsius. This is achieved without fans which improve reliability and decreases the need for maintenance. MSS-XE also provides an edge aggregation capability for both rural and suburban scenarios giving operators and their customers that much-needed capacity.

 

Nokia is also introducing an enhanced edition of the Nokia UBT-T XP dual-carrier radio with a new dual-band option for the spectrum bands 6 GHz and 11 GHz. Ideal for rural applications, these new solutions provide maximum flexibility for interference mitigation and spectrum efficiency while delivering high path performance and capacity.

 

Nokia has also introduced a Simplified RAN Transport (SRT) solution that complements the RAN with additional transport capabilities by leveraging the existing BTS transport resources and RAN management architecture. This delivers end-to-end service management and automation from RAN to core throughout the whole transport network.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has today announced its smallest Optical Line Terminal (OLT) deployed with the Quillion chipset. The Lightspan DF-16GM OLT can simultaneously provide services from 1 to 25 Gb/s making it the fastest mini-OLT on the market. Designed for deployment in street cabinets and available today, the device is targeted at fiber network providers looking to extend their networks beyond dense urban environments.

 

The majority of fiber deployments have so far focused on high density, high volume urban areas where the business case is strongest. However, fiber network providers are now extending networks to business parks and rural areas with low density populations, as well as using them to connect small cells within their cellular networks.

 

The Lightspan DF-16GM addresses the market for these new use-cases which require high-capacity solutions in a small form-factor and that can be easily intalled in distributed enviromnents such as street cabinets and base stations.

 

Emir Halilovic, Principal Analyst at Global Data, said: "Cabinet-based OLTs give operators a lot more flexibility in network design and the demand for small size fiber solutions has increased significantly over the last few years. 10Gb/s plus capacity and low latency is needed to take advantage of new opportunities such as in the enterprise market, 5G transport, and edge cloud computing space. For instance, a CSP could run a line to a cabinet in an industrial park and then use the mini OLT to connect multiple SMEs on the park"

 

As the only mini OLT on the market to incorporate GPON, XGS-PON and 25G PON, the multipon Lightspan DF-16GM is fastest in its class and it also uses half the energy of its predecessor and 25% lower than prescribed by the EU Code of Conduct.

Espoo, Finland Nokia today announced it is providing its SR Linux network operating system (NOS) and 7220 IXR data center switches to everyWAN, the Spanish operator that provides national and international IP transit and interconnection services between major data centers and internet peering points in Europe. The solution will enable everyWAN to expand its services and data center operations by improving network scalability, while helping operations objectives with more granular network visibility and NetOps automation.

The solution augments the IP transit, interconnection and data center gateway solution based on Nokia 7750 Service Routers (7750 SR) that everyWAN has deployed in its international backbone network since December 2020. Since this deployment, everyWAN customers have enjoyed increased service resiliency and reliability compared to the previous solution. In addition, customers enjoy a wider range of new service offerings as part of the everyWAN portfolio.

EveryWAN offers its customers an ecosystem of premium "pay-as-you-go" services. The Nokia solution has enabled the everyWAN network to scale to handle a huge growth in traffic driven by the convergence of communications and IT. In addition, the solution enables everyWAN to offer its customers the best interconnection and IP transit services to all major European destinations, cloud providers and internet exchange providers by selecting the best routes based on lowest latency, jitter, speed fluctuation and packet loss.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia and GSMA Intelligence today announced new research showing that communication service providers (CSPs) around the world believe that deploying artificial intelligence (AI) software is essential to reducing fast-rising network energy demand and emissions, spurred by internet traffic growth.

 

With the United Nations' COP26 climate change conference proceeding in Scotland where world leaders are working to reach a global emissions deal, most CSPs surveyed in the research said that energy efficiency is either "very important" or "extremely important" in their network transformation strategy to counter rising energy consumption and emissions.

 

Along with the use of renewables, AI energy management software is central to many CSP strategies to shrink their environmental footprint, due to those solutions' ability to be used quickly and effectively across an entire network with little to no human intervention.

 

GSMA Intelligence, an industry authority on global mobile operator data, insights, reports and forecasts, found that 83% of CSPs surveyed see energy efficiency as a major network transformation driver that will grow in importance as 5G is operationalized by industry; while 67% expect their energy costs to rise over the next three years based on current trends.

 

Global internet traffic has risen exponentially in recent years due to a convergence of factors like increased television and movie streaming, video conferencing from remote working, and online gaming as 4G and now 5G become a larger share of the mobile customer base. Such activities require more energy consuming telco equipment and bandwidth capacity, as well as large amounts of data stored in an ever growing number of energy consuming data centers. As businesses and enterprises tap advanced 5G services, like network slicing, further demands will be made on telco networks, data centers, and energy consumption.

   

Many CSP respondents acknowledged they are still in the early planning and testing stages of getting their AI efforts off the ground with respect to energy efficiency. Still, nearly 50% of CSP respondents said they expect to achieve energy savings of 10% to 20% over the next two years as AI energy solutions are rolled out and optimized.

 

Using zero-touch automation, AI programs can improve energy savings by closely aligning equipment usage patterns with real-time network demands; and identifying performance anomalies in underperforming network equipment that saps energy resources and requires replacement.

 

Beyond curtailing energy demand, AI-powered energy solutions are expected to drive other important outcomes, such as reducing the number of on-site visits personnel have to make to troubleshoot network issues.

 

The separate white paper by Nokia and GSMA Intelligence projects that the implementation of mobile and digital technologies, like 5G, 4G, private networks, and IoT sensors, could catalyze large carbon emission savings in manufacturing, power and energy, transportation, and buildings; all of which account for around 80% of global carbon emissions.  

 

For example, annual manufacturing carbon savings from the rollout of smart factories at scale could save the equivalent of 28 million roundtrip flights from London to Los Angeles in a year; while energy savings from the widespread use of smart meters in homes, by more efficiently using resources when they are actually needed, would be enough to power 97 million homes in a year.

AI solutions hold the promise of realizing quick and substantial energy efficiency gains and ensure we fully live up to our environmental and social responsibilities."

 

Tim Hatt, Head of Research and Consulting at GSMA Intelligence, said: "AI has clear and tangible benefits to improving the energy efficiency of telecom networks and is a big part of the solution in driving sustainable 5G networks. It's important to deploy AI early in order to train the algorithms and continually optimize network ops and costs over the long run."
