Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it enhances its Altiplano cloud platform and launches Cloud Acceleration Services to accelerate SDN success for the global community of broadband builders and application developers. The open, modular and fully programmable Altiplano platform allows to leverage the broadband network as a platform, making it easy to quickly connect and deploy new devices, applications and services. As a full-featured package or open platform, it serves each operator's needs. Cloud Acceleration Services help build and maintain personalized SDN solutions, ensuring all network nodes - third party, virtual and legacy – are structured correctly.

 

Moving to SDN and cloud is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for network builders to boost competitiveness with new levels of operational efficiency, scalability and agility. It allows evolution beyond closed hardware-based infrastructure towards software-defined platforms. Software-defined access networks (SDAN) brings flexible cloud attributes to the network, including IT-style programming, fast feature delivery, quick adjustments and automation.

 

Network evolution towards cloud and platform operations is incremental and depends on the unique business, technological and operational needs of each operator. Nokia's new Cloud Acceleration Services are designed to simplify the network evolution by applying a three-step approach that allows operators to define the optimal path and pace towards open disaggregated access solutions:

  • Business and technology consulting services and modeling tools help quantify the operator specific SDAN benefits and use cases.
  • System integration, automated testing services and key assets like Nokia SDAN Multivendor Integration Centers and Migration Operations Centers bring the customized SDAN solution from drawing board to reality.
  • The cloud-native capabilities of the Nokia Altiplano platform, combined with Nokia's System Integration approach and Nokia DevOps Automation Platform help operators test and quickly launch their new features and services.

 

Nokia also offers the Altiplano Developer Portal, with a software development kit (SDK) to easily integrate and fully control the connectivity of devices and applications. This allows custom solutions with a mix of Nokia and third party elements to be engineered. Operators also gain access to a virtual lab, where they can easily develop and test applications and services before deployment. Under the Connected Partner Program, independent software vendors proactively integrate their OSS applications with Nokia fixed networks solutions to fast track integration efforts.

 

With the new 1RU Lightspan DF-16G fiber node and modular chassis Lightspan MX-6, Nokia offers a complete portfolio of SDN native nodes from large chassis-based systems and data-center-inspired pod designs to smaller stackable nodes and sealed/dense micro-nodes.  For operators with compatible ISAM MX-6 platforms, Lightspan MX-6 enables smooth evolution to SDN via software upgrade.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that Equinix will deploy a new Nokia IP/MPLS network infrastructure to support its global interconnection services. As one of the largest data center and colocation providers, Equinix currently runs services on multiple networks from multiple vendors. With the new network, Equinix will be able to consolidate into one, efficient webscale infrastructure to provide FP4-powered connectivity to all data centers – laying the groundwork for customers to deploy 5G networks and services.

Equinix currently provides metro, national and international interconnectivity and cloud services to its customers to distribute content that delivers the best user experience. As 5G rollouts continue, a fundamental shift in network design is critical to support 5G service capabilities such as ultra-low latency, high capacity and the power to connect multiple devices and systems into one, seamless and automated whole.  

 

In response, Equinix is replacing its older multi-vendor networks with a single global IP/MPLS network from Nokia, powered by its innovative FP4 routing silicon and Network Services Platform (NSP). Equinix will now be able to deliver all of its interconnection services worldwide, saving its customers money, streamlining their operations and easing their unique 5G transformations.

 

With a presence in 24 countries across five continents, Equinix connects its hyperscale, communication service provider and enterprise customers with their end users in 52 markets worldwide, extending their digital infrastructure to wherever in the world they need to do business.

Espoo, Suomi – Nokia ja Tampereen yliopisto ovat aloittaneet yhteistyön perustaakseen järjestelmäpiirien kehitykseen keskittyvän "Soc Hub" -osaamiskeskuksen. Yhteistyön tavoitteena on kiihdyttää Nokian ReefShark-tuotevalikoimassa käytettävän teknologian kehitystä.

 

Yhteishankkeen myötä perustetaan Soc Hub -osaamiskeskus Tampereen yliopiston kampukselle ja sen tavoitteena on vauhdittaa Nokian omiin järjestelmäpiireihin pohjautuvaa alustakehitystä, suunnittelua ja tuotantoa. Osaamiskeskus avataan marraskuussa 2020.

 

Yhteistyön tarkoitus on vauhdittaa piirisarjojen kehitystä ja tuotteiden markkinoilletuloa, kehittää piirisarjakehitysosaamista pitkällä tähtäimellä sekä rakentaa perustaa teknologiajohtajuudelle. Yhteishanke tähtää myös piirikehityksen nopeuttamiseen vuosittaiseksi ekosysteemikumppaneiden kanssa. Ekosysteemissä Nokia osallistuu merkittävästi esimerkiksi lohkosuunnitteluun sekä piirien fyysiseen suunnitteluun.

 

Nokia perehtyy myös muiden osaamisalueiden kuten koneoppimisen, keinoälyn ja tietoturvalaitteistojen kehitykseen sekä avoimeen lähdekoodiin perustuviin järjestelmäpiireihin. Nokian liiketoiminnan maailmanlaajuinen kattavuus tukee Tampereen Yliopistoa tulevissa tutkimusprojekteissa sekä tulevaisuuden insinöörien kouluttamisessa.

 

Projekti saa Business Finlandin tukea Nokian Veturi-hankkeen kautta, joka keskittyy teollisten 5G-ratkaisujen ja ekosysteemikehityksen nopeuttamiseen teollisuuskumppaneiden ja johtavien yliopistojen kanssa. Nokia on tehnyt tiivistä yhteistyötä Tampereen yliopioston kanssa jo 2000-luvulta lähtien, jolloin sen innovaatiokeskus toimi yliopiston yhteydessä.

 

Jyrki Vuorinen, Tampereen yliopiston Informaatioteknologian ja viestinnän tiedekunnan (ITC) dekaani, sanoi: "Olemme innoissamme yhteistyöstä Nokian kanssa räätälöityjen järjestelmäpiirien kehittämiseksi 5G-infrastruktuuria varten. Tämä merkittävä yhteishanke vauhdittaa pii-innovaatioita ja ennen kaikkea auttaa operaattoreita hyödyntämään 5G:n tarjoamat mahdollisuudet. Olemme rekrytoineet työelämäprofessorin ja aloittaneet kahden kansainvälisen professuurin rekrytoinnin."

Nokia and Finland's Tampere University join forces to develop 5G chipsets

 

  • Joint venture creates foundation for long-term development of silicon-based processors

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has joined forces with Tampere University to establish a 'Center of Excellence' to enhance the development of System-on-Chip (SoC) custom processors for its ReefShark chipset portfolio.

 

The partnership, which will be based at the University campus, aims to accelerate the introduction of the technology into Nokia's ReefShark chipset portfolio. It will also enhance Nokia's silicon capabilities and development of proprietary SoCs. The Center of Excellence is expected to open in November this year.

 

The purpose of the partnership is to accelerate the development of proprietary SoC chipsets, including their design and manufacture, to improve time-to-market and to build a long-term SoC development competence and a foundation for technology leadership. The joint venture will also target an annual chip cadence with ecosystem partners, and see Nokia contribute to module and physical implementation.

 

Nokia will also explore areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence and security hardware development as well as open source hardware based SoCs. Nokia's global reach will support Tampere University with future research projects as well as guide them in their approach to educating the engineers of the future.

 

The project is supported by Business Finland through Nokia's Veturi initiative that drives industrial 5G and ecosystem development with industry partners and leading universities. Nokia has maintained a close partnership with Tampere University since its 'Nokia Innovation Center' was co-located with the University in the 2000s. 

 

Jyrki Vuorinen, Dean of the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences at Tampere University: "We are excited to partner with Nokia to develop custom silicon System-on-Chip solutions for 5G infrastructure. This is an exciting joint project that accelerates silicon innovation and ultimately enables operators to realize the benefits of 5G. We have recruited a professor of practice and started the recruitment process of two international professorships."

Nokia reaches 100 5G deals and 160 commercial 5G engagements

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has signed 17 new 5G commercial deals in Q3. With these wins, the company now has 100 commercial 5G deals with individual customers and a total of 160 commercial 5G engagements, including paid trials.

 

Nokia is present in all 5G early adopter markets, with deals with the top four US CSPs and the top three in both Japan and Korea. Just this week, Nokia signed a new 5G deal with BT in the UK and a renewed 5G deal with Elisa in Finland.

 

Nokia's 5G portfolio is also gaining traction amongst enterprises. Enterprise customers now make up 12% of Nokia's 5G deals, with recent private wireless deployments including Deutsche Bahn, Toyota Production Engineering and Sandvik. Nokia also boasts a 180-strong portfolio of private wireless customers, many of whom are expected to migrate to 5G.

 

Nokia's increasing 5G momentum amongst CSPs and enterprises is being driven by advances in Nokia's technology:

 

  • In February, Nokia revealed it was first in the world to pioneer 4G and 5G network slicing, which enables operators to deliver unique, isolated 'slices' of the end-to-end network to their customers, tailored to specific applications.
  • In April, it introduced the industry's first Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) solution that supports spectrum sharing between 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G.
  • In July, the company announced it can migrate five million legacy 4G radio units to 5G via a software upgrade, making it easier for operators to move to 5G.
  • Nokia made its 5G standalone (SA) private wireless technology commercially available in July – the first network equipment provider to do so.
  • In August, Nokia contributed to the world's first large-scale 5G SA launch with T-Mobile in the US.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced it is the first vendor to offer extreme automation of 4G and 5G network slicing across all network domains, including RAN, transport and core. The company introduces new network management, controller and orchestration capabilities to its solution, enabling mobile operators for the first time to rapidly deliver and assure network slicing services within minutes instead of hours or days.

 

Nokia's new automation capabilities, which comply with the 3GPP and IETF slicing specifications, are an extension of its 4G/5G end-to-end network slicing solution announced in February1 and the slice orchestrator announced in June2. First deliveries are planned by the end of 2020.

 

Slice automation enables operators to streamline operations, thereby reducing operational costs and meeting expectations for service velocity. Delivering slicing services quickly and efficiently requires operators to automate the life cycle management of slices in real time across different network domains. Automating the network slice creation and update becomes a key success factor for operators as the number of services, customers and slices continue to surge.

 

Nokia's new slicing management solution consists of radio, transport and core domain controllers and assurance tools. Controllers support real-time slice operations and automation for the creation, modification and deletion of a large number of slices in their respective, multivendor domain.

Operators can create different customer policies and group profiles for slices with different network performance, quality, routing and security capabilities. This enables them to provide new slicing services for small, medium or large enterprises, private wireless, Internet of Things, fixed wireless access, content and applications.

Nokia's network domain controllers and assurance tools simplify operations by abstracting the complexity of network functions for the services layer:

  • The end-to-end service orchestration sends declarative instructions to the domain controllers through open APIs.
  • Each domain controller then determines how the network slices will be implemented and operated within its domain to support the end-to-end SLAs.
  • Each domain embeds assurance capabilities to automatically collect, monitor, analyze and report Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) data per slice and apply closed-loop optimization to ensure continuous SLA adherence.

This enables operations teams to work together more efficiently in providing end-to-end slicing services, while enabling them to also focus on each teams' core expertise.

 

The new capabilities consist of software packages for Nokia's existing NetAct and SON/Self-Organizing Networks (radio) and Network Services Platform/NSP (transport and core) operations and assurance products. These capabilities work in conjunction with Nokia's Digital Operations Center service orchestration software to complete the round-trip process to design, deploy, optimize and assure slice-based services.
