Nokia wins Deutsche Bahn tender to deliver and test the world’s first 5G-based network for automated rail operation

Press Release

  • The solution is one of the world's first standalone 5G networks used for automated rail operation.
  • The project constitutes an essential milestone in the development of the 5G-based Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard — the successor to the current GSM-R standard

12 December 2019

Espoo, Finland – Nokia has won a tender to test and deliver the world's first standalone (SA) 5G system for automated rail operation in Hamburg, Germany. The project is part of Deutsche Bahn's highly automated S-Bahn operation project. The proof-of-concept will test whether 5G technology is mature enough to be used as the connectivity layer for future, digitalized rail operations. The project constitutes an early and important step in the development of the Future Railway Mobile Communications System (FRMCS) standard, based on 5G, and sets the stage for the digital transformation of railway operations.

Nokia is a leader in this market with extensive experience in providing GSM-R systems to rail operators in 22 countries, covering 109,000 km of track. Overall, Nokia has provided networking, cybersecurity, IoT and analytics solutions to 110+ operators for both mainline and metro rail. This project to deliver the first 5G SA solution for rail operation, further emphasizes Nokia's leadership position.

By 2021, as part of the project "Digitale S-Bahn Hamburg", highly automated trains (with train drivers on board who keep safety responsibility) are expected to operate on a 23-kilometer section of the S-Bahn Line 21, starting at Berliner Tor, one of the main transport hubs in Hamburg. Part of the demonstration will include fully driverless shunting of empty trains in an area near Bergedorf station, based on the transmission of train control information over the Nokia 5G mobile network.

The Nokia 5G solution is based on 3GPP standards for 5G mobile networks, allowing highly or fully automated trains to exchange relevant data with trackside equipment by 5G radio. This will have positive effects on cross-border operation, capacity of rail infrastructure, punctuality of trains and also on customer experience.

Kathrin Buvac, President of Nokia Enterprise and Chief Strategy Officer, said: "We are very pleased to be Deutsche Bahn's partner, bringing digital technology to the forefront of the Hamburg S-Bahn network and rail system. Together, we have worked to research, develop and deliver the world's first 5G-based communication system for automated rail operation, an important milestone towards the Future Rail Mobile Communicatoin Sytem and a major step in making Industry 4.0 a reality."

Nokia Bell Labs Prize awarded to new processor technology pioneered by student and professor team from University of California at Berkeley

Press Release

Nokia Bell Labs Prize awarded to new processor technology pioneered by student and professor team from University of California at Berkeley

6 December 2019

Murray Hill, New Jersey – Nokia today announced this year's Nokia Bell Labs Prize, the global competition to recognize game-changing innovations that attracted more than 250 applications from 31 countries around the world.  The 2019 prize has been awarded to a student and Professor team from the University of California at Berkeley. PhD student Tianshi Wang and Professor Jaijeet Roychowdhury received $100,000 for winning the competition, and the opportunity to pursue an expanded collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs.

The pair won the prize for their work on "A Classic Spin on Quantum Computing." Their innovation is in a new type of processor element that will be significantly more efficient in computing the answers to discrete optimization problems. Their innovation will complement conventional digital processors (CPUs and GPUs) by efficiently tackling a wide range of computationally hard problems of importance in many diverse areas, including 5G communication systems; complex tasks in planning, scheduling and control; and even the discovery of new drugs.

Marcus Weldon, Nokia Corporate CTO and President of Nokia Bell Labs, said, "The Bell Labs Prize is a unique opportunity for innovators around the world to collaborate with Bell Labs researchers to expand the potential of their innovations. The competition is highly competitive, reducing more than 250 applicants to 5 finalists, who must convince their Bell Labs mentors and the judging panel that their innovation has the potential to change the world. This year's winners have certainly met that criteria, by pioneering a new processor technology that will allow a large set of complex optimization problems to be solved with unprecedented efficiency and at low cost. It is truly impressive work and we will be closely collaborating with the team to help them realize this potential."

The 2019 Nokia Bell Labs Prize competition was launched in April. Proposals were reviewed by Nokia Bell Labs researchers and evaluated based on three criteria, including whether the idea has a "10X innovation potential" to change the world; the proposal's technical merit; and the overall feasibility of the proposed idea.

The proposals were narrowed down to a select group of outstanding candidates who were given the opportunity to partner with Nokia Bell Labs experts to help expand the impact of their proposals. Five finalists were invited to the final judging event held this week at Nokia Bell Labs headquarters in Murray Hill, N.J. The judging panel was comprised of Weldon, Nobel Laureate Robert Wilson, world-renowned computer scientist and Bell Labs alum Al Aho, as well as previous Nokia Bell Labs Prize winners Samory Kpotufe (2018) and Kaushik Sengupta (2017).

Second place and $50,000 went to Dr. Sheng Xu, Assistant Professor in the Department of Nanoengineering at University of California at San Diego for his submission, "There is plenty of room under the skin: A wearable's perspective." His team have developed an easy-to-use ultrasonic patch that can provide noninvasive, continuous and unobtrusive monitoring of deep tissues. This innovation will not only impact consumers, who will have access to data on their hearts, lungs, livers, and GI tracts, but also healthcare systems allowing non-invasive continuous patient monitoring and ultrasonic imaging.

Third place and $25,000 were presented to Maximilian Arnold, Sebastian Cammerer, Sebastian Dörner, Stephan ten Brink of Stuttgart University in Germany for their innovative work on "Leveraging 5G Infrastructure for a Robust Positioning System." Their indoor positioning system uses existing wireless communications networks to determine location which will allow ubiquitous, low cost tracking of all things, with simpler calibration than existing systems, and therefore has the potential to become a foundational part of the next industrial revolution.

Sari Baldauf seuraa Risto Siilasmaata Nokian hallituksen puheenjohtajana vuoden 2020 varsinaisessa yhtiökokouksessa

Nokia Oyj

Pörssitiedote
3.12.2019 klo 15.12

Sari Baldauf seuraa Risto Siilasmaata Nokian hallituksen puheenjohtajana vuoden 2020 varsinaisessa yhtiökokouksessa

"Puheenjohtajakauteni aikana olemme muuntaneet Nokian yhdeksi maailman johtavista verkkoteknologiatoimijoista, jolla on vahva perusta tulevaisuutta ajatellen", sanoi Risto Siilasmaa.

Baldauf liittyi Nokian hallitukseen riippumattomana hallituksen jäsenenä vuonna 2018.

Nokian varsinainen yhtiökokous on suunniteltu pidettäväksi 8.4.2020.

Sari Baldauf to succeed Risto Siilasmaa as Nokia Board Chair at Nokia's Annual General Meeting 2020

  • Risto Siilasmaa will step down from the Nokia Board of Directors after serving 12 years as a Director and the last eight years as the Chair at Nokia's Annual General Meeting, planned to be held on April 8, 2020.
  • Following a nearly one-year succession planning process, the Board's Corporate Governance & Nomination Committee proposes the Vice Chair, Sari Baldauf, to be the new Chair of the Nokia Board, subject to her re-election to the Board by the Annual General Meeting.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia announced today that its Board Chair, Risto Siilasmaa, has informed the Board that he will not stand for re-election to the Board of Directors at the Nokia Annual General Meeting in 2020. Siilasmaa joined the Nokia Board in 2008 and was appointed as Board Chair in 2012. He also served as interim CEO of Nokia from 2013 to 2014.

"During my time as Board Chair, we have repositioned Nokia as a world-leading network technology business, with a strong basis for the future," said Risto Siilasmaa. "This has included some fundamental strategic steps, including the sale of the Nokia mobile devices business to Microsoft, taking full ownership of the NSN telecom infrastructure business, and the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent. This transformational journey has not been easy, and I would like to thank everyone at Nokia for their determination and dedication."

"We are in the midst of another transition now, with the historic move to 5G," continued Siilasmaa. "While we know that Nokia is facing some short-term challenges as the technology matures, I am confident that we have the right actions underway to address those issues. Many parts of Nokia are performing well, and we are delivering on our strategy to diversify into enterprise markets and build our software business."

The Corporate Governance & Nomination Committee has conducted a rigorous succession planning process for almost a year and, in alignment with the full Board, proposes Board Vice Chair Sari Baldauf as the new Chair and Board member Kari Stadigh as the Vice Chair as of the Annual General Meeting 2020, subject to their re-election to the Board.

Baldauf joined the Nokia Board as a non-executive director in 2018. In addition, she is a member of the Supervisory Board & Nomination Committee of Daimler AG and the Board of Directors of Aalto University. Baldauf was the Executive Vice President and General Manager of Nokia's Networks business group from 1998 to 2005 and, prior to that, held various executive positions at Nokia in Finland and the United States. Until 2018, Baldauf was the Board Chair of Fortum Corporation and a member of the Supervisory Board of Deutsche Telekom.

"I am honored by the nomination to serve Nokia and its shareholders as the Chair of the Board of Directors," said Sari Baldauf, Nokia Board Vice Chair. "Risto and I have worked closely together since I was named Vice Chair in May. I see a clear opportunity to help create long-term shareholder value and look forward to continuing to work closely with the Board and with Nokia CEO Rajeev Suri. Rajeev and his team are working hard to address both the short-term issues and strengthen Nokia's longer-term value drivers."

"Risto has been an excellent partner during a time of significant change at Nokia," said Rajeev Suri, the President and CEO of Nokia. "On behalf of all the employees of Nokia, I thank him for all his hard work and support. I look forward to working with Sari as the new Chair of the Nokia Board."

Nokia plans to publish the notice of the AGM 2020 and the complete proposals by the Board after the publication of its fourth-quarter and full-year 2019 results. Nokia's AGM is planned to be held on April 8, 2020.

Nokia to transform Finland’s nationwide smart grid for better support of renewable energy

Press Release

Nokia to transform Finland's nationwide smart grid for better support of renewable energy

  • Nokia is installing a mission-critical IP/MPLS network to enable Fingrid to digitalize and automate the management of its national power grid.
  • The new smart grid will be better able to seamlessly integrate variable renewables such as solar, wind and micro-generation from bioenergy.
  • The Nokia network will also support all current and legacy grid control applications including SCADA, teleprotection and current differential protection.

3 December 2019

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it has been selected by Fingrid, Finland's national transmission system operator, to build an IP/MPLS network to support the digital transformation of its national electrical grid. Fingrid will use the network to operate 120 high-voltage substations and control 14,600km of power transmission across the country. The new smart grid is needed to manage the growing adoption of variable distributed energy resources, such as wind, solar and micro-generation using bioenergy.

As one of Europe's leading users of renewable energy, Finland's power transmission network is constantly being upgraded in order to meet the changing character of energy generation. Solar and wind generation, for example, require a much more agile and automated grid to manage the variable, two-way power flows by automatically ramping and balancing inputs and outputs. This calls for new distributed energy resource management systems, which need a highly reliable, secure communications system to monitor, control, coordinate, and manage distributed energy assets.

Nokia's mission-critical IP/MPLS network solution has been deployed by transmission system operators worldwide — supporting these new grid applications along with other critical ones, such as supervisory control and data acquisition systems (SCADA), teleprotection and current differential systems, which demand stringent control of latency and jitter. This project is in partnership with NetNordic, a longstanding Nokia channel partner.

Kari Suominen, head of ICT for Fingrid, said: "We are committed to realizing the potential of renewable energy generation and are embarking on an ambitious transformation of our national grid to make it smarter and more flexible. Nokia's IP/MPLS solution plays an important role in the digital transformation of our distributed energy resource management by providing us with a reliable, secure and agile communications system that has the potential to support all of our power management needs."

Kamal Ballout, Global Vice President of Energy Practice for Nokia, said: "Fingrid joins our long list of transmission system operator customers who are modernizing their networks and transforming their businesses by embracing more distributed and renewable energy sources. Through continued investment in our IP portfolio, we are able to meet the specific requirements of today's energy market, helping them evolve their infrastructure for a more sustainable future."
