HERE maps the future of smarter cities

NOKIA

HERE maps the future of smarter cities

Detroit - Today HERE, a leader in navigation, mapping and location services, announced two new research collaborations with the SWARCO Group and the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force (OCCV). Together with its partners in the intelligent transportation space, HERE is showcasing technologies that have the potential to alleviate some of the chief headaches of urban motorists - traffic and parking - as well as make roads safer. At ITS World Congress in Detroit this week, HERE will demonstrate how these technologies could help cities transform their road networks.

"Cities are not getting any smaller and one of the problems that poses is more vehicles and more congestion. Fortunately, modern technologies can help," said Ogi Redzic, Vice President of Connected Driving at HERE. "In two demonstrations in Detroit next week, we look forward to showing how the HERE location cloud can be combined with smart new technology to help cities become better places to drive a car."

SWARCO and HERE pave the way for smoother traffic in the connected mobility space

At ITS World Congress, HERE and SWARCO will demonstrate how technology can help cities like Rome better control, predict and manage traffic flows. Through SWARCO's next generation traffic management solution, SWARCO's traffic signal and sensor data, integrated with HERE probe data, will help city managers better predict traffic and control vehicle flow. The HERE location cloud can leverage this traffic data to enable intelligent services that help automakers optimize driving strategies for their drivers.

ITS World Congress attendees will be able to view a kiosk display of traffic in Rome and witness how the integrated offering from HERE and SWARCO can improve traffic conditions in congested cities.

"SWARCO is committed to enriching people's lives and their intermodal mobility experience every day, through the use of advanced technology and delivery of seamless and sustainable mobility services," said Mr. Cees De Wijs, CEO of the SWARCO Group. "With the collaboration with HERE, our traffic management and control systems are evolving by exploiting the capability to interact with the vehicles, so to address individually the road users and improving the safety, efficiency and comfort of their travel."

HERE supports Oakland County Connected Driving Task Force initiative

At ITS World Congress, HERE will also showcase an alternate and potentially fail-safe means of maintaining accurate positioning in parts of a city where there isn't adequate GPS coverage, such as between high buildings, in parking garages or in underpasses.

With support from the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force (OCCV) and Paxgrid, HERE will show, through a parking demonstration, how this technology can provide precise location positioning of a vehicle with the use of two small roadside boxes known as WAVE DSRC units, but without GPS or cellular positioning information.

HERE is providing its precise maps for the technology, which has the potential to be a key element of future city-wide connected vehicle systems. Positioning technology like this could enable vehicles - as well as bicycles and skateboarders - to be part of a grid of moving objects. The ability for vehicles to know where other drivers are at any given moment could result in safer roads and fewer collisions. It could also help drivers overcome everyday frustrations like finding vacant parking spaces.

"My call for a countywide connected vehicle ecosystem is a great challenge. Early testing by the Oakland County Connected Vehicle Task Force and its partners like HERE indicates that we are moving in the right direction," Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson said.

The traffic management demonstration with SWARCO and the Oakland County localization demo

Will take place on Belle Isle in the HERE lot. Both demos will take place Monday, Sept. 8 through Thursday, Sept. 11.

HERE for Samsung: Fresh maps for the new Samsung Gear S

Berlin, Germany - HERE, a leader in navigation, mapping and location experiences, today announced that it has partnered with Samsung to bring its maps and location platform services to Tizen-powered smart devices by Samsung, including the newly-announced Samsung Gear S.

With this partnership, HERE continues to broaden its reach to more people and businesses across screens and operating systems.

On the Samsung Gear S, HERE is powering an application called Navigator, which offers turn-by-turn walk navigation and public transit routing. The app provides a complete stand-alone experience, including the ability to store map data locally on the device and use it offline for navigation, directions and search.

To get the most out of Navigator on your Samsung Gear S, you can also pair it with a new app called HERE (beta) which HERE has developed for the Samsung Galaxy family of devices. With the app you can conveniently plan and calculate routes for walking and public transit on your phone and then send them to your smartwatch. The app will be made available for download from the Samsung GALAXY Apps store when the Samsung Gear S hits stores.

Available at no cost to Samsung Galaxy users, HERE (beta) offers among other features:

  • Offline Navigation: Turn-by-turn drive or walk guidance without an internet connection for almost 100 countries;
  • Detailed maps for download to use offline with your Samsung Galaxy;
  • Public transport maps and directions for more than 750 cities in more than 40 countries available without an internet connection and live traffic information for more than 40 countries.

Sean Fernback, Senior Vice President Everyday Mobility, HERE, said: "We believe that maps and location-related functionality are essential for any operating system. HERE aims to deliver fresh maps, platform services and location cloud experiences to as many people and businesses as possible, independent of the device and operating system they are using. Partnering with Samsung for the Tizen OS, and providing maps and location services for the first time with the new Samsung Gear is another huge step for us in that direction."

"Samsung is committed to providing consumers with the best possible mobile experience and we always look for partners to help expand the capabilities of our smart wearable devices," said Chan Woo Park, Vice President of Product Strategy Team in Mobile Division at Samsung Electronics. "We are thrilled to partner with HERE and bring innovative, personalized mapping pedestrian navigation services to our Tizen-powered smart wearable devices starting with the Samsung Gear S."

Nokian hallitus päätti suunnatusta osakeannista vuoden 2013 osakesäästöohjelmaan osallistuneille Nokian työntekijöille

Nokia Oyj
Pörssitiedote
20.8.2014 klo 9.05

Nokian hallitus on päättänyt yhtiön hallussa olevilla omilla osakkeilla toteutettavasta, enimmillään 200 592 Nokian osakkeen (NOK1V) suunnatusta osakeannista Nokian vuoden 2013 osakesäästöohjelmaan osallistuneille Nokian työntekijälle.

HERE Receives Frost & Sullivan's 2014 North American Connected Services Technology Innovation Leadership Award

Berlin, Germany - HERE, a leader in mapping and location, has been recognized by global research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan as a trailblazer in developing connected vehicle technology. In the report detailing the award, Frost & Sullivan notes that HERE stands apart in the highly competitive space for its knowledge and industry experience, impressive data collection ability, high level of personalization, revolutionary products and wide ranging partnerships "with nearly every OEM and system vendor."

Frost & Sullivan assessed HERE, along with other companies in the market, across 10 business performance criteria. In the category of "technology excellence," which includes criteria such as "commitment to creativity" and "commercialization success," HERE scored 9 out of 10 points, nearly 3 points above the next organization rated. In the category of "visionary innovation," which includes criteria such as "unmet needs" and "aspirational ideals," HERE scored 9.4 out of 10 points, more than 2 points above the next competitor.

"HERE's dedication to the automotive industry has put it on a pedestal above its competition," said Frost & Sullivan in the report. "HERE's dedication to consumers and the industry separates it into a class of its own. There is no doubt that the company will continue to pave the way through the industry-leading position that it currently occupies."

The report also notes how unique HERE offerings, such as HERE Auto and offline mapping, allow the company to improve the lives of people using all forms of transportation.

"Our focus is to help people live safer, more delightful, economic, and sustainable lives, and we are excited to be recognized for that," said Michael Halbherr, CEO of HERE. "This accolade continues to prove how HERE challenges the traditional norms of the marketplace in the process of becoming the preeminent location cloud."

Frost & Sullivan will hold a formal Awards Gala for all its 2014 Growth, Innovation and Leadership award recipients during its AGILE conference on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, in San Jose, Calif.

Nokia appoints Ramzi Haidamus to head Nokia Technologies and as member of the Nokia Group Leadership Team

Nokia Corporation
Stock exchange release
July 24, 2014 at 12:35 (CET +1)

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced the appointment of Ramzi Haidamus, a technology-licensing expert with proven business leadership skills and a strong innovation background, as President of Nokia's technologies business and member of the Group Leadership team, with effect from September 3, 2014.

A trained engineer, Haidamus has spent most of his career with Dolby Laboratories, which he helped to grow from a USD 72 million private business into a nearly USD 1 billion thriving public company. During his 17 years with Dolby, he held a variety of roles, most recently with chief operating officer-level responsibility. He has led innovation efforts, including those related to Dolby's technological roadmaps and standards development for DVD and BluRay.  He has experience in nurturing new technologies in an incubator-like environment and in growing new businesses, including as President of Via Licensing Corporation, a Dolby subsidiary.

"Ramzi has the perfect blend of technology savvy, business leadership and innovation experience to head our cutting-edge technologies business," said Rajeev Suri, President and Chief Executive Officer of Nokia. "With Ramzi at the head of the world-class Nokia Technologies team and our continuing investment in advanced research and development, we are
well-positioned to drive the innovation and licensing business needed to move us closer to our goal of technology leadership in a world where everyone and everything is connected."

"I am honored to take on this exciting role at Nokia," said Haidamus, incoming President of Nokia Technologies. "I relish the opportunity to head Nokia's ground-breaking technologies business with its track record of innovation and team of hundreds of world-class scientists and engineers. These experts have driven more than half of Nokia's recent patent filings and are leaders in fields that are essential for enabling the connected world."

Born in Lebanon, Haidamus moved at the age of 17 to the US, where he completed his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in electrical engineering at the University of the Pacific.

Henry Tirri, who has served as acting head of Nokia Technologies business since its formation on May 1, 2014, will continue in this role until Haidamus joins on September 3, 2014. From that date, Tirri will step down from the Group Leadership Team and will become an advisor to Suri on technology issues.

"We are grateful to Henry for all his work for Nokia over the years and for his willingness to lead the Nokia Technologies team during an important time of change and transition," said Suri. "Henry has graciously agreed to support Ramzi as he transitions into the company. Henry has unique insights into the world of technology, and I am pleased that we will continue to benefit from his expertise throughout this year and possibly beyond."
