Hrvatski Telekom and Nokia announce API pilot projects to expand 5G application development in Croatia

Press release

Hrvatski Telekom and Nokia announce API pilot projects to expand 5G application development in Croatia

  • Pilot projects to use Nokia's Network as Code platform with developer portal to enable developers to leverage Hrvatski Telekom's 5G network capabilities and create high-value applications.

  • The agreement highlights the increased collaboration and progress among Nokia's open and growing network of API ecosystem partners, such as Infobip, the global cloud communications platform, and Elmo, a leader in teledriving technology, to utilize network capabilities beyond connectivity.

  • Nokia has 27 partners in Europe, North and South America, and Asia that utilize its platform.

31 October 2024

Espoo, Finland —Nokia and Hrvatski Telekom (HT), the largest operator in Croatia and part of Deutsche Telekom Group, are collaborating on pilot projects that connect Nokia's Network as Code platform with developer portal to HT's network assets. The aim is to enable developers to harness and monetize the operator's market-leading 5G network assets and capabilities through the creation of new consumer, enterprise, and industrial applications for Hrvatski Telekom customers in Croatia and other parts of Europe.

5G-era software-based networks are programmable and monetizable beyond connectivity through Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), which provide developers standardized access to network functions, without having to navigate the complex underlying network technologies. Removing that burden allows developers to create new value and applications faster for their customers.

The pilot work highlights the increased collaboration and progress among Nokia's open and growing network of API ecosystem partners, such as Infobip, the global cloud communications platform, and Elmo, a leader in teledriving technology, to utilize 5G and 4G network capabilities and generate new revenue streams.

Growing API ecosystem

Connecting Nokia and Infobip API platforms to Hrvatski Telekom's 5G network gives developers access to a wider array of network and CPaaS APIs, allowing them to develop new use cases more easily.

Infobip's market-leading cloud Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) provides developers with APIs for integrating real-time omnichannel communications features such as SMS, voice, and video into their applications. Nokia's Network as Code platform offers developers APIs for using 5G network capabilities like Quality of Service on Demand.

Through Hrvatski Telekom's 5G network, Elmo uses Infobip's communications API and Nokia's Quality of Service on Demand capability to ensure flawless video connections for the safe, secure, and reliable delivery of Elmo's teledriving technology.

Teledriving, an emerging use case, entails the remote operation of a vehicle via software, cameras, and sensors, in which a human driver controls the vehicle to a destination point in situations where safety, accessibility, or efficiency is a concern. Elmo has conducted several such remote driving tests successfully in Europe, some involving hundreds of kilometers across national borders between the driver's location and the car.

Developers using Nokia's platform can access 5G and 4G network capabilities through Software Development Kits (SDK), which give them the technical ingredients to create new applications easily. Nokia SDKs support functions such as Network insights, Quality of Service on Demand, and Device location.

Nokia currently has 27 partners in Europe, North and South America, and Asia that utilize its platform, including operators such as BT, DISH, Orange, Telefonica, and Telecom Argentina. Nokia's partnering expands well beyond the operator base to include hyperscalers like Google Cloud, CPaaS platform providers, large system integrators, and vertical Independent Software Vendors (ISVs).

Boris Drilo, CTIO, at Hrvatski Telekom said: "Through collaboration on piloting projects, with Nokia and other partners, we are exploring the great opportunities that could arise from unlocking the full potential of connecting new platforms with 5G network capabilities. Ensuring high-performing networks, foundational for the launch of new use cases across industries and businesses not only Croatia but across the globe, is essential for developers in creating new game-changing applications."

Matija Ražem, VP of Business Development, at Infobip said: "Offering a simplified developer experience is key to making network APIs commercially attractive. The strong partnership between Nokia, Hrvatski Telekom and Elmo is yet another demonstration of how the growing ecosystem of APIs is producing tangible solutions for providers and end users. Infobip is playing a key role as a CPaaS platform by offering APIs to enrich the services available in the market."

Enn Laansoo, Jr., Founder and CEO, at Elmo said: "Through tremendous collaboration with Nokia, Infobip, and Hrvatski Telekom, we are overcoming network challenges, such as peak time overload which can degrade video quality, to ensure the flawless connectivity required for remotely and securely operating Elmo vehicles, even during periods of high network traffic."

Shkumbin Hamiti, Head of Network Monetization Platform, Cloud and Network Services, at Nokia said: "With Nokia's Network as Code platform and open and growing ecosystem of API partners, Hrvatski Telekom will benefit from having more choice, flexibility, and extreme automation to create new value for its customers. As a B2B technology innovation leader, Nokia is driving the next evolution of networking to unlock new network applications with our platform."

Nokia selected to lead European lighthouse project on 6G sustainability

Press Release

Nokia selected to lead European lighthouse project on 6G sustainability

  • SUSTAIN-6G will evaluate and explore sustainable 6G technologies, methods and use cases touching on environmental, economic and societal needs
  • The consortium will work out solutions for three specific areas of sustainable development: energy smart grids, e-health and telemedicine, and agriculture

30 October 2024

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that the Smart Networks and Services Joint Undertaking (SNS JU) has selected Nokia to be the coordinator of the SUSTAIN-6G lighthouse project. The SNS-JU is a public-private partnership funded by the European Commission. Nokia will lead a consortium of innovators that will identify how 6G can play a key role in building a sustainable future, addressing not only environmentally sustainable, but also economically and societally sustainable technologies.

One of the main goals of SUSTAIN-6G is to develop new solutions for meeting sustainability challenges using the toolkit that 6G will offer. The consortium will devote considerable time to working out use cases for three targeted areas, drawn from the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Energy smart grid: The consortium will explore how 6G could be used to create microgrids that manage electricity demand. SUSTAIN-6G will also investigate the use of AI technologies for real-time control of distribution networks. This could lead to more efficient and resilient grids that minimize disruptions while providing the flexibility to draw energy from diverse sources as the world transitions to renewables like solar and wind.
  • E-Health and telemedicine: The consortium will generate new ideas on how 6G can make digital health more inclusive. 6G infrastructure could not only provide a far-reaching infrastructure for securely transmitting and analyzing medical data, but it also could be the foundation for new home-based online assessment services. These networks could improve the diagnosis and treatment process in underserved communities. Meanwhile AI could help detect disease outbreaks at early stages.
  • Agriculture: The consortium will investigate how 6G connectivity could be allocated on a temporary basis to enable smart agricultural applications that require high bandwidth, sensing, telemetry, data analytics and automation. For instance, 6G's edge cloud capabilities could be harnessed to handle high-priority farming-equipment automation tasks during harvests or provide advanced processing capabilities that integrate data from field sensors, climate stations, soil analysis and satellite imagery to provide contextualized information during the growing season.

As a lighthouse project, SUSTAIN-6G will be one of the SNS JU's most highly visible initiatives, and it is the third major European 6G research consortium that Nokia has been selected to lead. The others are Hexa-X and Hexa-X-II, which laid the groundwork for 6G pre-standardization and use cases respectively.

SUSTAIN-6G has broad representation from industry and academia. The consortium includes network equipment and services vendors, communications services providers, industrial equipment manufacturers, European research institutions and universities, and many small-and medium-sized enterprises. SUSTAIN-6G will kick off in January of 2025 and is scheduled to complete its work in 2027.

Peter Merz, Vice President of Nokia Standards, said: "The UN Paris Agreement committed the world to combatting climate change. Every industry must do its part. SUSTAIN-6G will show how the communications industry will apply the next generation of networking to creating that sustainable future, overcoming not just environmental challenges but societal and economic challenges as well."

Press Release

Nokia named Leader in GlobalData's Small Cell Competitive Landscape Assessment 2024 report

  • Nokia's award-winning small cell portfolio recognized as overall Leader in residential and outdoor categories beating competition

24 October 2024
Espoo, Finland – Nokia has been named Leader in GlobalData's Small Cells: Competitive Landscape Assessment September 2024 report. The in-depth report judged all leading small cell providers and positioned Nokia as overall Leader in the Residential and Outdoor categories. In particular, Nokia was commended for being the only vendor to offer an 'All-in-One' 5G solution for both outdoor and residential use cases available to the global market. GlobalData is a globally recognized data analytics and consulting organization.

GlobalData commented that: "Nokia's outdoor small-cell portfolio offers the lightest, smallest 5G products on the market and support for a wider range of spectrum bands than nearly every other vendor. The portfolio is also distinguished by containing the only all-in-one 5G small cell supporting sub-6 GHz spectrum that is not a CBRS product – a product, branded Kolibri, that is also as compact as any outdoor small cell radio on the market. And its Shikra Outdoor Residential Enterprise."

GlobalData defines small cells as 'mobile base stations that operate under lower power and with a smaller coverage range than traditional base stations. This category includes what have traditionally been called femtocells and picocells, which improve mobile coverage and capacity inside homes and businesses, respectively.'

Nokia has the widest range of small solutions that address all deployment requirements and offer seamless coverage, capacity and performance in dense urban areas and indoor venues with minimal infrastructure, enabling flexible and scalable deployments. Its advanced indoor radio solutions and compact, plug-and-play small cells enhance in-building coverage and capacity, such as in offices, malls and enterprises. They also support mmWave bands with high bandwidth and data rates for demanding 5G applications like VR, AR and gaming as well as smart cities and IoT applications.

Mark Atkinson, Head of RAN at Nokia, said: "We are proud to be named Leader in GlobalData's small cells competitive landscape assessment report. It's recognition of the steps we have taken to make our portfolio best-in-class for our customers. All of our solutions benefit from having the latest ReefShark chipsets and support all frequency ranges for premium coverage and capacity both indoors and outdoors."
