Nokia deploys fiber network in the heart of the Amazon rainforest with Global Fiber Peru

Press Release

Nokia deploys fiber network in the heart of the Amazon rainforest with Global Fiber Peru

  • New subaquatic optical, IP and XGS-PON fiber broadband network brings future-proof connectivity to the region, reducing the digital divide in 400 communities.
  • The localities of Iquitos and Santa Rosa de Yaraví (Peru), Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil) connected with fiber, bringing ultra-fast, multi-gigabit broadband services to over 500,000 people in the region for the first time.

28 May 2024

Lima, Perú. – Nokia today announced that it has deployed with Global Fiber Peru a new subaquatic and future-proof Optical, IP and fiber broadband network in the Amazon rainforest, helping to reduce the digital divide. The extensive network connects over 400 communities to multi-gigabit broadband access that is critical in today's digital economy.

Founded in 2015 as a subsidiary of Satelital Group, Global Fiber Peru operates a fiber optic network with coverage throughout Peru, and with special focus in the 180 provincial capitals.

Buried in the Amazon River, the new subaquatic network interconnects 500,000 users across 400 communities located in the heart of the Amazon rainforest, in an area known as the three-border region, where Peru, Colombia and Brazil share borders.

The Nokia subaquatic optical backbone connects the localities of Iquitos and Santa Rosa de Yaraví (Peru), Leticia (Colombia) and Tabatinga (Brazil), allowing Global Fiber Peru to offer the first FTTH (Fiber-to-the-Home) broadband access service in the region, as well as multi-gigabit services for enterprise users. The region has a diversified economy that includes oil production, agriculture (rice, corn and cassava), timber extraction, fishing, tourism and border trade.

Nokia has deployed a complete solution that includes its 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS), 7750 service routers, 7250 interconnect routers, 7210 services access systems (SAS), network service platform (NSP), FX 8 and FX 16 optical line terminals (OLT), fiber optical network terminals (ONTs) and Nokia Beacon 1 devices that help ensure a premium Wi-Fi experience within the customer premises. The deployment was made in collaboration with FYCO, a local partner specialized in fiber telecom networks in Latin America.

Nokia and FYCO are also providing training, professional services and maintenance services.

The deal also includes upgrading the customer's existing fiber networks in Lima, Cusco and Huancayo.

Rocío Castilla, CEO at Grupo Satelital, said: "For the impact it has on social, economic, and educational development, providing thousands of people with access to high-quality internet, this project is of utmost relevance for our company. Thanks to our R&D team, we completed the initial phase of the project, two years ago, having connected the district of Yurimaguas to the municipality of Iquitos through the Amazon River. From Iquitos, with Nokia, we completed of the second phase of that subaquatic network. Nokia's leadership, expertise and hold of innovative solutions are key components driving the success of our project."

Obed Dionisio, CEO at Global Fiber, said:   "We're excited and proud to be the first company to have successfully deployed an optical fiber network in the depths of the Amazon River, connecting three countries. This achievement bridges a significant digital gap in remote areas previously inaccessible by traditional means. Through our partnership with Nokia, a leading telecommunications company, we've enabled these isolated communities to access high-speed internet, bringing them on par with urban areas in terms of connectivity."

Edwar Juárez, Co-CEO at FYCO, said: "We have made a bold and strategic decision to invest in and support SATELITAL Group in this major initiative, utilizing Nokia's technology and innovation to bring connectivity to a region where the dense jungle has long isolated numerous communities. We are proud to contribute to the development and quality of life of the people living there. We will continue to invest in high-impact projects across Latin America, guiding us towards a more inclusive and sustainable future."

Osvaldo Di Campli, SVP & Head of Network Infrastructure Americas at Nokia, said: "This project is important as it provides fiber connections for the first time to hundreds of communities in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest. Broadband connectivity helps communities and local businesses grow and prosper. We are very happy to be part of this project and appreciate Global Fiber Peru's trust in Nokia and FYCO, and we look forward to future projects together."

Nokia successfully completes acquisition of Fenix Group, accelerating U.S. strategy

Press Release

Nokia successfully completes acquisition of Fenix Group, accelerating U.S. strategy

  • Acquisition strengthens Nokia's tactical communications portfolio offer

22 May 2024

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced the successful completion of its acquisition of Fenix Group, a privately held company that specializes in tactical communications solutions for the defense communities.

The acquisition, originally announced in December 2023, strengthens Nokia's position in the defense sector by adding Fenix's innovative broadband tactical communications products, including the industry-leading Banshee family and Talon MANET radios, to its existing solutions portfolio. This expanded portfolio will allow Nokia to offer a more comprehensive suite of 3GPP-based solutions to its defense customers worldwide. Interoperable, 3GPP-based mobile networks that are built for data-hungry applications will play an important role in the digitalization of military communications.

The closing of the acquisition, including the associated Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) review and approval, marks a significant milestone in Nokia's U.S. strategy. It underscores Nokia's commitment to being a trusted provider of secure and innovative solutions to the U.S. Federal government. With Fenix's established support to Defense Department programs, Nokia is now well-positioned to further expand its role as a pivotal technology provider for mission-critical needs.

Nokia and Fenix were jointly selected by the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) in October 2021 for a program. The mission was to provide ad hoc tactical private wireless communications bubbles. The combination of Nokia and Fenix supports the objective of bringing dual-use technology capabilities to the warfighter.

Mike Loomis, President of Nokia Federal Solutions: "The closing of the Fenix Group acquisition marks a significant step forward in our strategy to grow our defense business, as well as our overall U.S. strategy. Fenix's expertise in broadband tactical communications perfectly complements our existing offerings, and together we will be even better positioned to deliver high-performance, secure, and reliable solutions to our defense customers, helping them achieve mission-critical objectives."

Dave Peterson, CEO of Fenix Group: "We are excited to officially join forces with Nokia.  By combining our innovative solutions with Nokia's global reach and resources, we can create even greater value for our customers and make a significant impact on the future of secure military communications."

Fenix Group was previously a portfolio company of Enlightenment Capital.

O2 Telefónica and Nokia roll out 5G standalone core on Amazon Web Services in the cloud

Press Release

O2 Telefónica and Nokia roll out 5G standalone core on Amazon Web Services in the cloud

  • Deployment represents first major commercial service for an existing operator to run its 5G core network on a hyperscaler's public cloud.

8 May 2024

Espoo, Finland – O2 Telefónica in Germany and Nokia announced today the deployment of 5G standalone core software on Amazon Web Services (AWS). The rollout provides O2 Telefónica with ultra-low latency to deliver advanced 5G services, like extended reality and network slicing, which require instant availability and greater bandwidth capacity.

Nokia's secure and cloud-native 5G core architecture, including packet core, strengthens O2 Telefónica's network with more flexible scaling, reliability, and near zero-touch automation for moving and managing workloads.

The deployment underscores Nokia's multi-cloud ability to migrate existing communication service providers (CSPs) to a range of cloud platform options including public cloud, private cloud, and hybrid cloud; using their choice of cloud platforms and making it easy for CSPs to deploy applications and services on any infrastructure.

Nokia leads the world in 5G standalone core, with a total of 107 CSP customers. Nokia 5G Core was recently rated as an industry leader by data and analytics company GlobalData.

Mallik Rao, Chief Technology & Information Officer at O2 Telefónica, said: "We are building our network of the future. With the launch of the new, cloud-based 5G core network, we are doing pioneering work in Europe and we are taking a major step in our transformation process. With the new 5G cloud core, we are moving away from traditional architectures and instead focusing on modern, high-performance, and efficient network technologies. In doing so, we are relying on the quality and global expertise of Nokia and AWS. We offer our customers an excellent 5G experience and new digital applications."

Fabio Cerone, General Manager Telecom EMEA at Amazon Web Services, said: "We're thrilled to be selected for the 5G Cloud Core network deployment of O2 Telefónica and to realize their vision of the network of the future. By using Nokia 5G Core network on AWS, O2 Telefónica is redefining its operating model through full automation and elasticity at scale. It will bring O2 Telefónica the ability to dynamically scale and allocate 5G network capabilities to meet customer needs, as well as the needs of the new applications that will run on top of the new core."

Raghav Sahgal, President of Cloud and Network Services at Nokia, said: "We are delighted to support O2 Telefónica Germany's move onto AWS. This deployment, the first major one of its kind for an existing communication service provider, enables greater network agility and service offerings, and provides Telefónica Germany with all the tools it needs to efficiently manage and extract greater value from its network assets. The deployment underscores Nokia's multi-cloud ability to migrate communication service providers to the public cloud, making it practical for them to deploy applications and services on the infrastructure of their choice; and, with more flexible scaling, reliability, and near zero-touch automation."
