China Mobile first to deploy Nokia's new Massive MIMO solution, accelerating the transition to 5G services

NOKIA

China Mobile first to deploy Nokia's new Massive MIMO solution, accelerating the transition to 5G services

Press Release

  • China Mobile instrumental in development with Nokia of world-first 320W mMIMO Adaptive Antenna (MAA)
  • Nokia AirScale MAA solution helps solve the operator's challenges as it concurrently delivers 4G and 5G services, and control its costs as it evolves to 5G

26 June 2019

Mobile World Congress, Shanghai, China - Nokia has announced that China Mobile (CMCC) will adopt its new AirScale mMIMO Adaptive Antenna (MAA), created specifically for the massive bandwidth and coverage requirements of the Chinese market as it transitions to 5G. Building on CMCC's leadership in the 2.6 GHz 5G ecosystem, the Nokia MAA ensures that, as one of the world's biggest operators, CMCC can more efficiently allocate network resources between 4G and 5G users and address the demand for high-bandwidth 5G use cases.

As a 5G pioneer, CMCC already leads in the development of 2.6 GHz mobile services in the Chinese market. But it requires even greater bandwidth, coverage and flexibility to ensure it can deliver the most optimized 5G experience across its markets.

Nokia worked directly with the operator to create the new version of the MAA which - at 320W - is at least 80W greater than the closest MAA on the market. CMCC is now able to support 4G and 5G in concurrent mode in the 2.6 GHz frequency band, which helps CMCC to flexibly balance the two technologies. In addition, the 160 MHz, 320W version ensures CMCC has better coverage and capacity, which helps to reduce CAPEX as the operator transitions its subscribers to 5G.

Mark Atkinson, Head of 5G and Small Cells business at Nokia, said: "Nokia has been operating in China for 40 years, and we are pleased to have this opportunity to work so closely with an industry leader like China Mobile. The development of the AirScale MAA with its industry-first 320W output is the direct result of input from the China Mobile team on what they needed to speed the deployment of 5G services to their customers. We look forward to continuing to work with CMCC as its 5G plans evolve."

The MAA uses 64 transmit and 64 receive antenna elements, which combined deliver a total of 320W output power, the highest of any MAA in the industry.

Nokia currently has 43 commercial 5G deals with operators around the world and is involved in more than 100 5G-related customer engagements. During Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Nokia won the coveted 5G Leadership Award for demonstrating leadership across the 5G ecosystem - through innovation, collaborative R&D, a wide range of industry partnerships and significant contribution across both the technical and business aspects of this technology.

NOKIA BELL LABS AND AMBER RESEARCHERS FORMULATE NEW BATTERY DESIGN FOR THE 5G WORLD

NOKIA

NOKIA BELL LABS AND AMBER RESEARCHERS FORMULATE NEW BATTERY DESIGN FOR THE 5G WORLD

  • New battery technology provides critical attributes for 5G networks, renewable energy grids, and the consumer and Industrial Internet of Things
  • Offers 2.5 times the battery life in the same volume as the current market leading super slim battery
  • Doubles the energy a battery can carry without changing the weight, a critical requirement for uses such as IoT networks, electric vehicles and drones

20 June 2019, Espoo, Finland, and Dublin, Ireland: Researchers at Nokia Bell Labs and AMBER, the SFI Centre for Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research  hosted at Trinity College Dublin, today announced they have created a new, innovative formula for battery composition that makes batteries more powerful by packing 2.5 times the battery life than anything currently on the market. As the world transitions to 5G, ushering in a new era of consumer and industrial Internet of Things (everything from wearable technologies, pervasive sensors, to industrial robots), this new, game-changing battery design has the potential to help power the connected world of the future.

The increasing power requirements of connected devices such as smartphones, drones, electric cars and robots necessitates greater battery performance for both new applications as well as longer battery lifetimes. The new battery design also has far-reaching implications for 4G and 5G networks where conventional power may not be available for network equipment, or where emergency backup battery systems are essential to keep systems running.

"By packing more energy into a smaller space, this new battery technology will have a profound impact on 5G and the entire networked world," said Paul King, one of the lead investigators on the project and Member of the Technical Staff, Nokia Bell Labs.  "The combination of Nokia Bell Labs industry and device knowledge and AMBER's materials science expertise allowed us to tackle an extremely difficult problem involving multiple disciplines. Our results were achieved through the deeply collaborative mode in which we work, underscoring the value of engaging with AMBER as part of our global research strategy."

"The significant advancement in battery technology outlined in this research is a testament to the strong collaboration between AMBER and Nokia Bell Labs. Bringing scientists together from industry and academia with a common research goal has resulted in a substantial scientific breakthrough," said Dr. Lorraine Byrne, AMBER Executive Director. "AMBER's partnership with Nokia Bell Labs through their Distinguished Academic Partners Program has been a hugely positive experience and clearly illustrates the benefits of industry-academic engagements. I look forward to AMBER's collaboration with Nokia Bell Labs continuing to break new boundaries in science creating impact for society."

An additional benefit to this new technology is its potential to improve the performance of large-scale energy grids powered by renewable energy.  The demand for reliable power relies on storage technologies, such as the battery technology described here, to manage the high fluctuation in energy generation in today's wind and solar renewable technologies.  A new study from Wood Mackenzie shows that the energy storage in 100 percent renewable systems will likely be 25 times higher as compared to today's systems. This will pose issues as the need for efficient, fast charging and compact energy storage becomes even more imperative.

A patent has been filed to protect this new technology design and help bring it to the marketplace. A study discussing the battery research performed by Nokia Bell Labs and AMBER has been published in Nature Energy* a leading international science journal.

Nokia Bell Labs has been collaborating with AMBER as part of the Nokia Bell Labs Distinguished Academic Partners Program. The program brings together Nokia Bell Labs researchers with the best and brightest minds at the world's top universities to solve future human needs, transform human existence, and deliver disruptive innovations.

Nokia signs revolving credit facility with its pricing mechanism linked to the company's sustainability targets

NOKIA

Nokia signs revolving credit facility with its pricing mechanism linked to the company's sustainability targets

June 19, 2019

Espoo, Finland - Nokia announced today the signing of a EUR 1,500 million five-year multicurrency revolving credit facility ("RCF") with two one-year extension options and introduced a sustainability pricing mechanism linking the margin of the RCF to two of Nokia's key sustainability targets:

1) Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions attributed to Nokia's operations and;

2) Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions attributed to Nokia's customers' use of Nokia's products

Nokia's targets include a 41% greenhouse gas emission reduction of its own operations and a 75% greenhouse gas emission reduction arising from the use of sold products by 2030 compared to the 2014 baseline. The margin of the RCF will increase or decrease depending on Nokia's progress towards reaching these targets.

Nokia's sustainability targets are accepted by Science Based Targets, ensuring that Nokia's greenhouse gas emissions targets and paths towards those targets are independently validated to be in line with the Paris Agreement goal "to hold the increase in global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and to pursue efforts to limit the increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels". Science Based Targets is a collaboration between the international not-for-profit organization CDP, the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), World Resources Institute (WRI), and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

Kristian Pullola, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Nokia, said: "We're delighted with the strong support and commitment from our key banking partners in this refinancing transaction that connects our financing strategy with our sustainability priorities."

Karoliina Loikkanen, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Nokia, said: "Linking the pricing of the revolving credit facility to our sustainability targets is an important step towards demonstrating our broad-based commitment to our sustainability priorities. Our sustainability vision is to create the technology to connect the world, in a responsible way."

The RCF will replace the EUR 1,579 million revolving credit facility agreement dated 26 June 2015.
