Nokia drives key European research project 5G-MoNArch to bring 5G mobile network architecture from concept to real world

NOKIA

Nokia drives key European research project 5G-MoNArch to bring 5G mobile network architecture from concept to real world

Press Release

  • The 5G-MoNArch research project coordinated by Nokia started as part of Phase II of the European 5G-PPP initiative
  • 5G mobile architecture concepts from 5G-PPP Phase I are brought into practice with industry-driven use cases and two real-world testbed implementations
  • 14 industry, academic and research institute partners co-operate in this flagship project

August 22, 2016

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today formally launched the 5G MoNArch (5G Mobile Network Architecture) research project. Supported and financed as part of Phase II of the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP) - under the auspices of the European Union's Horizon 2020 Framework Programme - 5G MoNArch will put fifth-generation mobile network architecture into practice. The project consortium, consisting of 14 leading industrial and academic partners and coordinated by Nokia, will focus on the implementation of a set of 5G use cases in real-world testbeds.

5G MoNArch's specific goal is to use network slicing, which capitalizes on the capabilities of software-defined networking (SDN), network functions virtualization (NFV), orchestration, and analytics, to support a variety of use cases in vertical industries such as automotive, healthcare, and media. Network slicing is a technique where the network is logically (not physically) sectorized, so that separate services are supported by each "separate" logical network. As 5G networks need to simultaneously support various services with different requirements, network slicing will be a crucial aspect of the network architecture, providing flexible and adaptive networks which fulfill the 5G requirements.

Nokia strongly supports projects that bring together the public and private sectors to advance technology, and has pursued this approach for decades. Since 2015, Nokia has been a leading contributor to 5G-PPP, coordinating the Phase I research of 5G-NORMA - the leading European network architecture research project setting the conceptual basis for 5G communications networks - and providing key input to 3GPP standardization. Now, in the second phase of 5G-PPP, 5G MoNArch aims to complement the initial groundwork by bringing these concepts to practical deployment.

5G MoNArch involves 14 key mobile network players from six European countries, bringing together the complementary background and technical know-how required to turn the project's vision into reality. It will run for two years with a total budget of 7.7 million €.

In continuation of 5G-NORMA, 5G-MoNArch enriches the original architectural concepts of the first phase with innovations such as cloud-enabled network protocols, and showcases the new technology in two testbeds. The flexible and programmable architecture will support the vast variety of services, use cases, and applications that 5G will bring in the next years.

The main objectives of 5G MoNArch are:

  • Detailed specification and extension of 5G architecture
  • Enhancement of architectural designs with key enabling innovations such as inter-slice control and cross-domain management, experiment-driven modeling and optimization, and native cloud-enabled protocol stack
  • Functional innovations around the key technologies required for dedicated 5G use cases: resilience, security, and resource elasticity
  • Deployment and experimental implementation of the architecture for two use cases in real-world testbeds - heavy communications usage in a tourist-heavy city, and secure and reliable communication in a seaport environment
  • Evaluation, validation, and verification of the architecture performance

Peter Merz, head of End-to-End Mobile Networks Solutions at Nokia Bell Labs, says: "5G PPP brings together a range of stakeholders from the communications technology sector and other industries. We follow a shared architecture of what the next-generation communications infrastructure needs to look like to enable and meet the network demands of the next decade. 5G communication needs both private and public entities to invest in the infrastructure and ensure Europe remains competitive. Nokia is fully committed to the 5G-PPP: we have delivered know-how and innovative technologies since its launch in 2015 in order to strengthen the European 5G footprint."

Nokia Bell Labs leads project to develop next generation 5G platform-as-a-service for 5G era

NOKIA

Nokia Bell Labs leads project to develop next generation 5G platform-as-a-service for 5G era

Press Release

  • NGPaaS project - part of 5G-PPP initiative - aims to develop customizable platform supporting acceleration and flexibility of 5G development
  • Project will enable transformation across multiple industry stakeholders
  • Consortium composed of 12 leading industry vendors, operators, IT companies, small and medium-sized enterprises and academic institutions

9 August 2017

Espoo, Finland - Nokia Bell Labs is to lead a consortium of industry vendors, operators, IT companies, small and medium-sized enterprises and European academic institutions to build over the next 24 months the Next Generation Platform-as-a-Service (NGPaaS) for the 5G era. The consortium is part of the 5G Infrastructure Public-Private Partnership (5G-PPP), launched in 2014 as an initiative between the European Union and telecom concerns.

5G standard is emerging at a particular time in technology history when the cloud is deeply transforming many industries and services. As such, innovations have to be cloud-native in order to be successful and this means adopting a model beyond the current telco Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) model: a Platform-as-a-service (PaaS) model.

Such a 5G cloud-native platform has two key features:

  • An ideal 5G cloud-native platform must facilitate building, shipping and running virtual network function (VNF) applications with 'telco-grade' quality in terms of latency, reliability and capacity, thereby delivering the promise of 5G performance.
  • It must also combine all sorts of third-party applications with those VNF, thereby creating more versatile and powerful cloud objects breaking silos between connectivity (to humans, robots, sensors, etc.) and computing (machine learning, big data, video applications).

Such a platform does not exist today. With NGPaaS, the consortium's goal is to realise the vision of adopting the PaaS model to optimally support cloud-native 5G systems.

Bessem Sayadi, consortium project leader and research manager for Nokia Bell Labs, said: "The consortium's ambition for developing a next generation PaaS is to enable developers to collaborate within the 5G ecosystem (operator, vendor, third party) in order to ignite new businesses; thereby increasing market scale and improving market economics."

Industry and academia players included in the consortium

Vendors and IT: Nokia Bell Labs France (FR), Nokia (IL), ATOS (ES),

Operators: BT (UK), Orange (FR)

Small and Medium-sized Enterprises: Virtual Open Systems (FR), Vertical M2M (FR), B-COM (FR), ONAPP (UK)

Academia: University of Milano-Bicocca (IT), Danmarks Tekniske Universitet (DTU), IMEC (BE),

Nokia Bell Labs has been a major force in driving and participating in 5G research and industry collaboration. It looks at PaaS as an essential stepping stone for service providers seeking to gain the greatest benefit from the carrier cloud as they evolve their networks. In addition to leading the NGPaaS consortium, Nokia Bell Labs is also cooperating with key academic partners and is active in various events such as ICC, MWC, OpenStack Summit and OPNFV to discuss with the research community how to achieve this goal.

NOKIA

Nokia to expand development and deployment of 5G FIRST as industry interest grows

Press Release

  • Clear interest for 5G mobility applications already emerging from operators, notably in markets like the US, China, Japan and South Korea
  • 5G mobility standard integrated into the Nokia 5G FIRST end-to-end solution
  • Trialing of rapidly evolving 5G technology and commercial applications as market appetite points to meaningful rollouts in 2019
  • Call to make available spectrum at low-, mid- and high-frequency bands for 5G

1 August, 2017

Espoo, Finland - Meeting growing customer interest in 5G, Nokia is broadening its focus into multiple areas of early 5G mobility use cases, including enhanced mobile broadband and ultra-reliable, ultra-low latency communications. Nokia will push for accelerated 3GPP industry standardization while building on early customer experiences with its Nokia 5G FIRST end-to-end solution, launched in February at Mobile World Congress.

With clear interest for 5G mobility applications already emerging from operators, notably in markets like the U.S., China, Japan and South Korea, Nokia will implement early 5G specifications, enhancing 5G FIRST with the 3GPP 5G Phase I protocol. This 5G NR (New Radio) air interface standard, which is due at the beginning of 2018, is designed to support a wide variety of 5G devices and services.

Nokia will continue to evolve and expand 5G FIRST as an end-to-end solution, designed to drive broader market adoption of 5G, via both mobility and fixed applications, as well as testing multiple 5G use cases. The company is building on extensive field experience already gained with Nokia 5G FIRST, which has generated valuable insights into areas such as:

  • Use of radio propagation in higher frequencies
  • Massive MIMO and beamforming
  • Integration with existing networks versus standalone implementations
  • The use of small cells in 5G deployments
  • The importance of cloud native core and cloud RAN technologies

These and many other of the key elements of 3GPP-based 5G implementation will enable Nokia to extend the scope of interoperability testing with a variety of devices. Nokia will also continue its application of leading-edge technologies, such as chipset and radio frequency innovations, in its end-to-end 5G strategy.

Marc Rouanne, president of Mobile Networks at Nokia said: "There should be no doubt about the huge potential of 5G. Through 5G FIRST, Nokia is evolving its 5G strategy to drive the industry rapidly towards the adoption of standards-based commercial applications - as early as 2019. Doing so will require broad cross-industry support, and we call upon regulators and governments to free up and enable the use of spectrum at low-, mid- and high-frequency bands for trials. This will allow robust evaluation of 5G to take place, so that collectively, we can deliver one of the most important new technologies in history, one that will truly drive the Fourth Industrial Revolution."

Did You Know

Leveraging Nokia's end-to-end network capabilities, 5G FIRST also incorporates the multi-access Nokia  Cloud Packet Core and the Nokia Shared Data Layer as part of a cloud-native core architecture to deliver the flexibility, massive scalability and performance operators need to rapidly and cost-effectively deliver 5G services. A comprehensive 'anyhaul' mobile transport offer from Nokia incorporates microwave, IP, optical and fixed access technologies to address the critical capacity, reliability and latency requirements of the 5G era.
