Oulu – Nokia avasi tänään uuden, huippumodernin tutkimus- ja tuotantokampuksen Ouluun. Kampuksella suunnitellaan, testataan ja rakennetaan seuraavan sukupolven verkkoja tekoälyn tarpeisiin. 


Avajaisiin osallistuivat tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubb, Nokian johtoa ja valtionhallinnon edustajia, asiakkaita, yhteistyökumppaneita sekä työntekijöitä. Presidentti Stubb ja Nokian toimitusjohtaja Justin Hotard keskustelivat tilaisuudessa teknologian vaikutuksesta Euroopan tulevaisuuteen.


"Tämä investointi on loistava uutinen ja osoitus siitä, että Suomeen investoiminen kannattaa. Se kertoo myös verkkojen kriittisestä roolista – 5G ja 6G ovat perusta tekoälylle, robotisaatiolle ja esineiden internetille," sanoi tasavallan presidentti Alexander Stubb.


"Tiimimme Oulussa muokkaavat 5G:n ja 6G:n tulevaisuutta kehittämällä maailman edistyneimpiä radioverkkoja. Oulussa on ainutlaatuinen ekosysteemi, jossa yhdistyvät Nokian tutkimus- ja kehitystyö, verkkojen älykäs rakentaminen sekä kumppaniemme osaaminen aina yliopistoista startuppeihin ja Naton DIANA-keskukseen. Oulu on erinomainen esimerkki innovaatiokulttuuristamme ja uudella kampuksella tulee olemaan tärkeä rooli edistyneiden verkkojen kehittämisessä, joita tarvitaan tekoälyn supersyklin vauhdittamiseksi", Nokian toimitusjohtaja Justin Hotard kertoi.

Uusi Home of Radio -kampus kattaa koko tuotekehityksen elinkaaren ja työllistää noin 3 000 henkilöä vahvistaen turvallisten 5G- ja 6G-verkkojen suunnittelu-, testaamis- ja rakennuskapasiteettia Euroopassa. Kampukselta löytyvät maailman kehittyneimmät radioverkkolaboratoriot ja tuotantoteknologia. Tämä mahdollistaa simuloidut ja todelliset kenttävarmennusympäristöt, jotka vauhdittavat verkkojen kehitystä.


Oulun kampus keskittyy erityisesti 5GPPP-standardointiin, järjestelmäpiireihin (System-on-Chips) sekä 5G-radiolaitteisiin, -ohjelmistoihin ja -patentteihin. Kampukseen kuuluva Oulun tehdas puolestaan keskittyy Nokian matkapuhelinverkkojen uusien 5G-radio- ja tukiasematuotteiden valmistukseen. Kampus vahvistaa Oulun roolia globaalina kokeilualustana kestäville ja turvallisille verkoille sekä siviili- että puolustusalan sovelluksissa.


Kestävä kehitys on keskeisessä roolissa kampuksella, sillä se käyttää toiminnassaan kokonaan uusiutuvaa energiaa. Sen ylijäävä energia ohjataan noin 20 000:n oululaisen kotitalouden lämmitykseen. Kampuksen energialaitos on yksi maailman suurimmista hiilidioksidia hyödyntävistä kaukolämpö- ja jäähdytysjärjestelmistä.


Oulun uusi kampus: 

  • Kampuksella työskentelee noin 3 000 työntekijää, jotka edustavat yli 40 kansallisuutta.
  • Oulun kampus kattaa koko tuotteen elinkaaren tutkimuksesta ja tuotekehityksestä valmistukseen ja testaukseen.
  • Rakennuksen kokonaispinta-ala on 55 000 neliömetriä, sisältäen tuotanto-, T&K- ja toimistotilat.
  • Kaikki kampuksella käytettävä energia on uusiutuvaa, ja ylijäämäenergia syötetään takaisin kaukolämpöverkkoon lämmittämään noin 20 000 oululaista kotitaloutta.
  • Kampuksen jätteet hyödynnetään sataprosenttisesti, ja sen ratkaisut estävät 99 % hiilidioksidipäästöistä.
  • Rakentaminen alkoi vuoden 2022 jälkipuoliskolla ja ensimmäiset työntekijät muuttivat tiloihin kuluvan vuoden alkupuolella.
  • Rakennuttajana toimi YIT, ja arkkitehtisuunnittelusta vastasi Arkkitehtitoimisto ALA.

Oulu, Finland – Nokia today announced the opening of its new, state-of-the-art R&D and manufacturing campus in Oulu, Finland that will design, test and deliver next-generation networks built for AI.

 

The opening ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic of Finland Alexander Stubb and officials from the Finnish Government, customers, partners and employees. The event also saw President Stubb join Nokia President and CEO Justin Hotard in a moderated panel discussion, covering the impact of technology on Europe's future.

 

"This investment is great news and it's a statement that it pays off to invest in Finland. It also says that network infrastructure is key - when you're working on 5G or 6G, you're creating the neural network of whatever we do in artificial intelligence, whatever we do in robotization or Internet of Things", said Alexander Stubb, President of the Republic of Finland.

 

"Our teams in Oulu are shaping the future of 5G and 6G developing our most advanced radio networks. Oulu has a unique ecosystem that integrates Nokia's R&D and smart manufacturing with an ecosystem of partners – including universities, start-ups and NATO's DIANA test center. Oulu embodies our culture of innovation and the new campus will be essential to advancing connectivity necessary to power the AI supercycle," said Justin Hotard, President and CEO of Nokia.

 

Covering the entire lifecycle of product development, Nokia's new "Home of Radio" campus is a home to around 3,000 experts and boasts some of the world's most advanced radio network laboratory and manufacturing technology. This capacity will provide both simulated and real-world field verification environments to accelerate network evolution, ensuring that secure 5G and 6G networks are designed, tested and built in Europe.

 

Oulu campus' immediate focus will center on 5G including 5GPP Standardization, System-on Chips as well as 5G radio hardware and software and patents. Oulu Factory, part of the new campus, will target New Production Introduction for Nokia's 5G radio and baseband products. The new campus strengthens Oulu's ecosystem as a global testbed for resilient and secure networks for both civilian and defense applications.

 

At Oulu, Nokia's research and innovation underpins high quality, tested world class products readymade for customers across markets. Nokia's experts will continue to foster innovation, from Massive MIMO radios like Osprey and Habrok to next-generation 6G solutions, creating secure, high-performance, future-proof connectivity.

 

Sustainability is integral to the facility. Renewable energy is used throughout the site, with additional energy used to heat 20,000 households in Oulu. The on-site energy station is one of the world's largest CO2-based district heating and cooling plants.

 

Nokia Oulu Facts:

  • Around 3,000 employees and 40 nationalities working on the campus.
  • Oulu campus covers the entire product lifecycle of a product, from R&D to manufacturing and testing of the products.
  • Footprint of the building is overall 55,000 square metres, including manufacturing, R&D and office space.
  • Green campus with all energy purchased green and all surplus energy generated fed back into the district heating system and used to heat 20,000 local households.
  • The campus boasts 100% waste utilization rate and 99% avoidance in CO2 emissions.
  • Construction started in the second half of 2022, with the first employees moving into the facility in the first half of this year.  
  • YIT constructed the site and Arkkitehtitoimisto ALA were the architects.

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that IEEE, the world's largest technical professional organization advancing technology for humanity, recognized the company for its introduction and worldwide deployment of ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) as an IEEE Milestone. Close to one billion people benefited directly from this innovative technology breakthrough that laid the foundation for modern broadband.

 

Developed in 1993 in Antwerp, Belgium, ADSL was the first large-scale broadband technology. It delivered multi-megabit internet over standard telephone lines, making broadband accessible and affordable for billions around the world.   • 87% of enterprises adopting private wireless and on-premise edge saw ROI in one year.

Espoo, Finland — Nokia today released the 2025 Industrial Digitalization Report developed with GlobalData, which highlights that 87% of on-premise edge and private network adopters are seeing a return on investment in just one year while enabling AI-driven use cases. Additionally, 81% of industrial enterprises found setup costs lower, with over half saving at least 11%. Ongoing costs also dropped for 86% of companies, with 60% reporting savings of at least 11%. The report draws on insights from 115 industrial enterprises in manufacturing, energy, logistics, mining, and transportation in Australia, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.


On-premise edge and private wireless unlock AI's potential in complex industrial environments

AI's potential in industrial settings hinges on access to high-quality, real-time data; 94% of industrial enterprises have deployed on-premise edge technology alongside private wireless. This combination enables secure, low-latency connectivity in complex environments and pervasive sensor coverage, even in hard-to-reach areas, supporting AI-driven use cases like predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring, and digital twins in 70% of surveyed enterprises.


 

BASF, a leading chemical company, deployed Nokia private wireless at its Antwerp facility to advance its digitalization strategy and enable reliable, high-performance connectivity across its six-square-kilometer premises. The private network supports AI- and sensor-driven use cases like real-time monitoring and predictive maintenance, enhances automation and efficiency, improves worker safety, and reduces environmental impact.


Private Wireless Drives Sustainability Gains
The study also highlights how operational performance improvements driven by private wireless networks are supporting sustainability goals. 94% of the surveyed industrial enterprises reported a reduction in carbon emissions, with 41% achieving decreases of more than 20%, and 89% seeing energy savings. These gains are amplified by predictive maintenance, connected devices, and drones that cut fuel-intensive travel and enable more accurate, real-time emissions tracking.

Safety, efficiency, and automation with connected worker technologies
Beyond environmental impact, 71% of surveyed companies are actively deploying connected worker tools such as automated alarms, AI-assisted monitoring, and geofencing solutions to reduce accidents and strengthen worker safety. Connected devices streamline tasks by reducing the need to move for signal and simplifying access to information. They also cut paperwork and minimize human error, boosting efficiency on-site, and automation.

Cybersecurity drives on-premise edge and private wireless adoption
Security remained a top priority, with 57% of respondents identifying cybersecurity as a driver to deploy an Industrial Edge platform powered by a Private Wireless network. Private wireless solutions offer built-in encryption, physical network separation, and compatibility with zero-trust frameworks, making them ideal for mission-critical infrastructure while maintaining business continuity and compliance.

"GlobalData forecasts the global private wireless network market will nearly double to US$8 billion by 2027. This reflects the growing demand as industries face mounting pressure to modernize in line with global sustainability and efficiency goals. Nokia partners with Extreme Broadband to improve security and future-proof data centers in Malaysia


 

  • Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its subsidiary Open DC will improve operational efficiency and support diverse use cases for their customers in Malaysia's growing digital economy.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – Nokia today announced that it has signed a contract agreement with Extreme Broadband (EBB) and its wholly owned subsidiary, Open DC, to upgrade Open DC's Artificial Intelligence (AI) data centers, ensuring superior security and network performance. This partnership supports Malaysia's National Cloud Computing Policy and addresses the stringent requirements of the banking and financial services industry, positioning EBB and Open DC as key innovators in the nation's digital infrastructure.


 

As part of the contract agreement, Nokia's IP network solution will be used by EBB to interconnect six AI data centers, spanning CJ1 Cyberjaya, JB1 Menara MSC Cyberport and JB2 Menara Ansar at Johor Bahru, PE1 Menara Suntech and PE2 Bayan Lepas Industrial Park at Penang and the upcoming D8-1 in Kedah, to provide a more reliable network with improved security and superior network performance. This deployment ensures a resilient, secure network that aligns with EBB's vision of "Innovating Connectivity" and Open DC's mission to "Develop the Connectivity Hubs at the Most Strategic Locations".


 

In addition, Nokia has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with EBB to collaborate in the fields of data center solutions and quantum-safe networks (QSN). The two companies will develop a joint go-to-market strategy for data center and AI connectivity, offering QSN, enterprise connectivity and value-added services for data center tenants, including multi-cloud connectivity and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) security and mitigation. They will also jointly conduct testing and validation of the Data Center Gateway, Data Center Fabric with Event-Driven Automation (EDA) tools and DDoS protection and mitigation.
