Nokia's IP edge and transport platforms, powered by proprietary silicon technology, provide the flexibility and scalability essential for sustainable broadband service delivery.

The upgrade will significantly enhance Vortex's broadband services by transitioning its network infrastructure from Layer 2 (L2) to a Layer 3 (L3) IP/MPLS-based architecture, improving operational efficiency and increasing overall capacity. As part of the deployment, Nokia will supply its 7250 IXR series routers and 7750 SR-1 BNG, enabling Vortex to replace its legacy BNGs and switches with high-capacity, scalable solutions built for long-term growth.

"Upgrading to Nokia's IP/MPLS network allows us to deliver a superior broadband experience with greater reliability, capacity, and speed. This transformation positions us to expand into Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities across Maharashtra, Goa, and Gujarat helping bridge the digital divide and unlock new growth opportunities. Our partnership with Nokia is a strategic step towards enabling high-speed internet access to more households and businesses across India," said Vineet Nishar (Lalu), Managing Director at Vortex Group.

"As we witness a growing surge in broadband, service providers need networks that scale efficiently while maintaining reliability. Our high-performance 7750 SR-1 BNG and 7250 IXR routers will enable the Vortex Group to modernize their networks and scale seamlessly while improving operational efficiency. This upgrade will enable them to consolidate infrastructure, reduce operational overhead, and enhance services for existing customers while also expanding into new markets," said Jivitesh Nayal, Head of Business Development for Network Infrastructure at Nokia India.

Nokia and INX-ZA future-proof internet connectivity for South Africa’s digital communities

Press Release
Nokia and INX-ZA future-proof internet connectivity for South Africa's digital communities

  • End users gain access to high-capacity, high-availability internet exchange services
  • INX-ZA unlocks 400GE-ready peering infrastructure, enhancing service reach and performance
  • Nokia's IP networking solution supports scalable, next-generation internet exchange architecture

21 August 2025
Johannesburg, South Africa – Nokia has been selected by INX-ZA, the Internet Exchange Point division of the Internet Service Provider Association (ISPA), to modernize its exchange infrastructure. INX-ZA will deploy Nokia's high performance IP routing portfolio to offer new 400GE and expanded 100GE services to its customers across the country. As a result, businesses and internet users can now experience faster, more resilient, and future-ready Internet connectivity in South Africa.

Internet exchanges are a critical component of the digital ecosystem, enabling data to be exchanged locally and reducing dependency on expensive international bandwidth. Yet many IXPs across Africa still operate on aging platforms that lack scalability and efficiency. INX-ZA's shift to Nokia's solution addresses these limitations head-on, opening the door to more energy-efficient, scalable and high-density infrastructure that can evolve alongside the region's digital ambitions.

Nokia will upgrade INX-ZA's Internet Exchange Points in Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, beginning with Johannesburg – home to JINX, Africa's oldest Internet Exchange Point, which has achieved 100% uptime since its launch in 1996. Together, Nokia and INX-ZA will expand JINX from seven to ten data centers by year-end, deploying thirty high-performance platforms in phase one to preserve its industry-leading availability while extending its reach.

The deployment, powered by Nokia's high-capacity 7250 Interconnect Routers and Service Router Operating System (SR OS), enables INX-ZA to offer new 400GE and expanded 100GE services for peering partners and Internet service providers (ISPs) – a capability not previously available in the region. In addition, it will augment the scale and performance of INX-ZA's backbone to connect to different points of presence (POPs) with 400GE links.

This initiative lays the foundation for similar transformations across the continent's legacy exchange points. It is a major step towards more efficient, flexible, and high-performance network infrastructure for South African ISPs, cloud providers, and enterprises.

"Upgrading to Nokia's 400GE-ready infrastructure isn't just about adding capacity – it's about reimagining how South Africa connects. With this modern, energy-efficient platform, INX-ZA can deliver faster, more reliable, and more sustainable interconnection services while maintaining the uptime and performance our community has come to expect of us. Nokia's technology gives us the scale and capability to keep our exchanges at the forefront of global standards and power the country's digital economy for the future," said Nishal Goburdhan, INX-ZA's General Manager.

"As people are consuming and producing more content and businesses are moving their loads to the cloud, Internet Exchanges are an essential and critical part of digital infrastructure. Working with customers like INX-ZA, which is deeply committed to technical excellence and community enablement, is aligning to our belief in delivering resilient, sustainable and scalable trusted infrastructure in South Africa. Our platforms offer the flexibility and openness needed to meet today's interconnection demands while paving the way for future innovation with SR Linux and automation," said Toni Pellegrino, Head of South and East Africa Sales Unit, Network Infrastructure, Nokia.

ProRail selects Nokia to modernize the Netherlands’ railway GSM-Railway core network

Press Release

ProRail selects Nokia to modernize the Netherlands' railway GSM-Railway core network

  • Upgrades will reduce downtime, cut long-term costs, and improve service reliability.
  • The four-year project paves the way for on-premises cloud-native control for railway systems.

5 August 2025

Espoo, Finland – Nokia today announced that it is working with ProRail, the organization responsible for the Netherlands' national railway network infrastructure, to deploy a cloud-native Global System for Mobile Communications for Railway (GSM-R) core network — a global first for the rail industry. By migrating its GSM-R core network, ProRail will enhance safety and services reliability for millions of passengers while paving the way for Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) networks.

The upgrade is part of a four-year modernization project that will extend the life of ProRail's existing 2G infrastructure, offering valuable insights into cloud-native technology. It enables ProRail to improve its railway services, decrease downtime, integrate new technologies as they emerge, reduce long-term total ownership costs, make seamless decisions, and improve operational efficiency through real-time data exchange.

"It is good to see that our partner Nokia is still investing substantially in the development of GSM-R. With the migration towards a cloud-native core network we lay the basis for the next 10 years of GSM-R operation and prepares us for FRMCS," said Geert Laureijssen, Manager Mobile Communications, ProRail.

As part of this life cycle management project, Nokia will supply, install and maintain its Nokia Cloud Platform, a fully cloud-native core infrastructure that includes the Nokia Assurance Center, Packet Core (Cloud Mobility Manager, Cloud Mobility Gateway), Registers, Intelligent Network, and Data Center Fabric. The project will also include upgrades for MantaRay NM, Nokia single network management system for all radio and mobile core technologies, Archive Cloud for automated network element backup and restore, and Nokia Network Services Platform for automating IP, optical and microwave networks, making ProRail's railway communications more agile and efficient.

"Railways are a cornerstone of green and efficient mobility. By beginning the transition to a cloud-native architecture, ProRail is ensuring its communication systems remain secure, reliable, and open to future innovation. We are proud to support ProRail in this transformation, which demonstrates the readiness of cloud-native solutions to support mission-critical infrastructure," said Emanuele Di Liberto, Head of Global Rail Business, Nokia.

Nokia and ProRail's deployment shows how European rail operators can build a foundation for future-ready communications as part of the ongoing industry's digital transformation. The timeline for this transition is crucial as rail infrastructure operators prepare for GSM-R lifecycle extensions and plan their migration to FRMCS in Europe and beyond.

GSM-R is the current standard for secure, reliable railway communications, supporting essential voice and data for train control and operations. FRMCS is the next-generation system, offering faster data, improved integration, and enhanced safety. By moving to a cloud-native GSM-R core, operators like ProRail, will be better positioned to explore synergies across applications, enable easier integration, and accelerate their journey toward FRMCS.
